FEATURED MOMENT

Jan. 3, 2003No. 2 Ohio State def. No. 1 Miami (Fla.), 31-24Fiesta Bowl – Tempe, Ariz.
College Football Hall of Fame coach Jim Tressel and Ohio State handed Miami its first loss in 34 games in a double-overtime BCS Championship thriller in 2003. The Hurricanes struck first on a Ken Dorseytouchdown pass to Roscoe Parrish, answered by two rushing touchdowns by Buckeyes’ quarterback and 2003 William V. Campbell Trophy winner Craig Krenzel and tailback Maurice Clarett. Miami tailbackWillis McGahee scored on a nine-yard run to cut the lead to 17-14, and Parrish dashed 50 yards on a punt return to set up Todd Sievers’ tying field goal on the final play of regulation. Hurricane tight endKellen Winslow hauled in a short touchdown pass from Dorsey on the first overtime possession. Facing a fourth-and-goal situation at the Miami five-yard line, Ohio State caught a break on a controversial pass interference call that led to a quarterback sneak by Krenzel to level the score. Clarett put the Buckeyes ahead 31-24 on a short run, and the Ohio State defense batted down a fourth-down pass by Dorsey to claim the 2002 National Championship. The Buckeyes claimed the school’s seventh national championship and first since 2002 with a perfect 14-0 record. Miami finished No. 2 in the nation with a 12-1 record.

OTHER NOTABLE MOMENTS

Dec. 28, 1963Western Kentucky def. Coast Guard (Conn.), 27-0Tangerine Bowl – Orlando, Fla.
Western Kentucky faced a tough Tangerine Bowl opponent in Coast Guard, who entered the game as the first undefeated team in academy history while allowing a program-low 42 points all season. The Bears’ defense, however, proved no match for the Hilltoppers and the Burt brothers, Jim and John. The two combined for 76 yards rushing to help set up both of quarterback Sharon Miller’s touchdown passes. Western Kentucky earned their third-straight shutout victory, ending the season with a 10-0-1 record. Coached by College Football Hall of Fame player Otto Graham, Coast Guard fell to 8-1-0.
Dec. 29, 1979Missouri def. No. 16 South Carolina, 24-14Hall of Fame Bowl – Birmingham, Ala.
South Carolina went the distance on the first possession, scoring on a 20-yard pass from Garry Harper toZion McKinney. Missouri, however, took control of the game with a 17-point second-quarter scoring spree. After a Missouri field goal from Ron Verrilli, the Gamecocks fumbled the ensuing kickoff, setting up a 28-yard touchdown strike from Phil Bradley to David Newman. Bradley scored a second time on the ground to solidify a 17-6 halftime lead. Harper answered in the third quarter with an 11-yard scramble and a two-point conversion pass to McKinney to cut the lead to three. Led by linebacker Eric Berg, the Tigers’ defense shut out South Carolina for the rest of the game, despite College Football Hall of Fame tailback George Rogers racking up 133 yards for the Gamecocks. South Carolina fell to 8-4, and Missouri finished with a 7-5 mark.
Dec. 30, 1994Tennessee def. No. 17 Virginia Tech, 45-23Gator Bowl – Gainesville, Fla.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the game, the Gator Bowl moved to "The Swamp" as the traditional Jacksonville site was being renovated for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tennessee, winners of its last five, and Virginia Tech, losers of three of their last four, combined for a bowl record point total. Running backJames Stewart became the Volunteers’ new career rushing leader and accounted for four touchdowns in the win. Future William V. Campbell Trophy recipient Peyton Manning threw for 189 yards and a touchdown, not long after being named the SEC’s Freshman of the Year. Fellow freshman signal-callerBrandon Stewart led two more scoring drives to build a 35-7 halftime lead. Coached by College Football Hall of Famer Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee jumped into the final AP Poll at No. 22 with an 8-4 record. The Hokies dropped out of the poll with an 8-4 record as well.
Dec. 31, 1992Baylor def. No. 22 Arizona, 20-15Sun Bowl – El Paso, Texas
College Football Hall of Fame coach and NFF Board Member Grant Teaff closed out his 21-year career with an upset victory over Arizona in the 1992 Sun Bowl. The Wildcats established an early 10-0 lead on aSteve McLaughlin field goal and a seven-yard touchdown run by quarterback George Malauulu. Arizona’s defense, led by Hall of Famers Rob Waldrop and Tedy Bruschi, failed to stop Baylor on two big plays by wide receiver Melvin Bonner, who would claim game MVP honors. Bonner outgained the rest of the team 130-119 on touchdown receptions of 61 and 69 yards in the second and third quarters, respectively. Trailing 14-10, Malauulu was stuffed at the goal line on a fourth-and-goal situation. Two fourth-quarter field goals for the Bears sealed the win and a 7-5 record. Arizona wrapped up the season with a 6-5-1 record.
Jan. 1, 1898Cincinnati def. Southern Athletic Club, 16-0New Orleans
Considered a precursor to the college football bowl era, Cincinnati was challenged by the Southern Athletic Club following the 1897 season in a postseason game in New Orleans. Traveling with just 14 players, the Bearcats became the first school in Ohio to travel south for a postseason game. Accounts of the game have Cincinnati beating the Southern Athletic Club 16-0. The Bearcats finished with a 9-1-1 record, with the only loss coming at the hands of Carlisle (Pa.).
Jan. 2, 1984UCLA def. No. 4 Illinois, 45-9Rose Bowl – Pasadena, Calif.
The Big Ten became losers of nine of the last 10 Rose Bowls as College Football Hall of Fame coachTerry Donahue and UCLA thumped Illinois in a rematch of the 1947 “Granddaddy of Them All,” which was the first official pairing of Big Ten and Pac-10 teams. The Bruins, sporting the worst record of any Rose Bowl participant, opened the scoring after a fumble on a blocked field goal return gave UCLA the ball on the Illini 14-yard line. The Bruins scored four plays later on a short pass form Rick Neuheisel toPaul Bergmann. Neuheisel tossed three more touchdown passes to tie the bowl record and give UCLA a 28-3 lead at halftime. The Bruins also racked up 213 rushing yards on the Big Ten’s best defense. UCLA’s defense didn’t allow a single rushing yard and forced six turnovers. The Bruins finished with an 8-4-1 record and a No. 17 ranking. Illinois, featuring Hall of Fame wide receiver David Williams, fell to No. 10 with a 10-2 record.

Wildcats Enter 2A Rankings At Number 7

Durant senior Will Bentley and the Wildcats enter the class 2A boy's basketball poll this week at #7 after starting the 2015-16 season 8-0.  Durant hosts Wilton Tuesday night in their last game before Christmas break.  Photo by Ryan Stonebraker, Tipton Conservative.

DURANT — After starting the season 8-0, the Durant boy’s basketball team has entered the Associated Press top-10 rankings for class 2A.  The Wildcats jump all the way to #7 after not being ranked in the first poll of the season last week.  Durant is one of three class 2A schools with both their boys and girls teams ranked.  The other two are Hull Western Christian and Treynor.
The Wildcat boys basketball team started to receive statewide recognition last week when the first Associated Press basketball polls were released.  Durant was officially 12th last week under the ‘others receiving votes’ line of the class 2A basketball poll.  Monday afternoon, the Wildcats learned that they were one of three River Valley Conference schools ranked in the top-10 in class 2A.
“We were watching film tonight and I got a call.  After getting off the phone, the guys were curious.  I told them that we were ranked, and they were pretty happy,” said Durant coach Matt Straube.
“It’s nice to be recognized for the nice start we have had.  It’s nice to be ranked, but we don’t care about the ranking, we want to be conference champs,” said Straube.
In preseason media interviews Straube said that he felt that his team could go 8-0 going into the  Wilton game on Tuesday December 21.  It has now come to pass.
“One of the things that I love about the team is that we are playing very hard.  We are going to enjoy the moment, but we have a very big basketball game against Wilton tomorrow,” he said.
The Beavers already own big overtime wins at home over West Branch and Camanche and have played at Cascade, the #2 ranked team in class 2A.
The Wildcats know that they have not hit the tough part of their schedule yet.  Durant will play at West Branch on January 5 to start their post Christmas schedule.  The Bears nearly knocked off #2 Cascade and lost in overtime at Wilton.  That starts a string of four big games followed by games with Camanche, Iowa City Regina and a return trip to Wilton on Friday, January 15.
“We know that we have some tough games coming.  It starts with Wilton Tuesday night,” said Straube.
“Our players don’t think that we have ‘arrived’.  We are going to need to beat one of the top-four North teams, a West Branch, Wilton or Regina to feel like we have backed up this ranking,” he said.
Durant is the only unbeaten team in the River Valley Conference South division at 8-0 overall and 3-0 against RVC South foes Tipton, West Liberty and Mid-Prairie.  The Wildcats lead the RVC South in total rebounds with 248 and lead in offensive rebounds (79) by 12 over the second place team. Durant is second in the RVC South in assists with 96.  The Wildcats are second in the South in made three pointers (37) and free throw attempts (125).
Individually, Durant has three of the top-10 scorers in the South led by Will Bentley with 98 points, the 4th best total as of Monday, December 21.
Defensively, the Wildcats give up just under 40 points a game and lead the RVC South in steals with 87 and blocked shots with 23.  Durant had held three RVC South teams to less than 40 points in each of their wins over Tipton, West Liberty and Mid-Prairie.  Durant has held five of their eight foes to under 40 points.
Two River Valley North teams are also ranked in the top-10.  Cascade checks in at #2 while NE Goose Lake is #5.  The Wildcats are one of three new teams in the top-10, joining Dyersville-Beckman and Pocahontas.  NE Goose Lake is 9-0 and  has the most wins in the 2A poll while Durant is 8-0 and has the second most wins in the top-10.    Monticello is in the ‘others receiving votes’ line.

KING NAMED FWAA FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICA

IOWA CITY, Iowa - University of Iowa defensive back Desmond King has been named to the AutoNation All-America first team, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).  The announcement was made Mondayby the FWAA.

The FWAA honor marks at least the sixth outlet that has named King as a first team All-American, as he was recently named to teams selected by the Walter Camp Foundation, Associated Press, ESPN.comUSA Today, and SI.com.  King was honored last Thursday as the winner of the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the top defensive back in the nation.

King’s selection gives the Iowa football program a first team selection on the football writers team for the second straight season, as offensive tackle Brandon Scherff earned consensus All-America honors a year ago.

King is the first Hawkeye defensive back to earn first team All-America honors since Merton Hanks in 1990.  He is the 14th Hawkeye to earn first team honors under coach Kirk Ferentz.

King was earlier named  the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Conference Defensive Back of the Year and was a first team All-Big Ten selection.  King was also one of five finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.

King (5-foot-11, 200-pounds), is a junior from Detroit, Michigan (East English Village HS).  He is second in the nation with eight interceptions.  King has multiple interceptions in two games, with two thefts in wins over Pittsburgh and Wisconsin.  He is the first Hawkeye with multiple multi-interception games in a season since Tyler Sash in 2009.

King’s eight interceptions tie the Iowa single-season record, a mark previously reached by Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick (1939) and Lou King (1981).  His seventh interception of the season was returned 88 yards for a touchdown in a win over Maryland, the second touchdown return of his career (Indiana, 2014).

King has recorded 67 tackles, with one tackle for loss, and 12 pass break-ups to go with his eight interceptions.  King also has handled KO returns (25.6) and punt returns (12.7) throughout the season.

King was named the Jim Thorpe national Defensive Player of the Week and Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week following Iowa’s win at Wisconsin.

Iowa (12-1), will meet Stanford (11-2) in the 2016 Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day (4:10 p.m. CT), in Pasadena.  Iowa completed a perfect regular season with a school-record 12 wins, winning the West Division before falling to Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship (16-13).

Jarrod Uthoff Named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week

Hawkeye senior averaged 29.5 points in 2 games

ROSEMONT, Illinois -University of Iowa senior Jarrod Uthoff was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week along with Maryland’s Melo Trimble. The announcement was made Mondayby the Big Ten Conference office.

The honor is the second of Uthoff’s career, having first earned the recognition on Jan. 6, 2015, following his performances in victories at Ohio State and against Nebraska.

Uthoff shot 61 percent from the field (22-of-36), including a blistering 69 percent from 3-point territory (9-of-13), and 86 percent from the free throw line (6-of-7) in two games last week, averaging nearly a double-double (29.5 points and nine rebounds). He also averaged 2.5 blocks.

The native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, scored a career-high 27 points in a 90-56 win over Western Illinois, and then bested that performance with a personal-best 32 points in a one-point loss at No. 2 Iowa State.

The Hawkeye senior scored 24 of his 27 points in the first half against the Leathernecks and 30 of his 32 in the first 20 minutes against the Cyclones. Uthoff's 32 points are the most by a Hawkeye since Matt Gatens had 33 against Wisconsin on Feb. 23, 2012, and the most by a Big Ten player this season against a ranked opponent.

In the first half against Iowa State, Uthoff was 11-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-6 from 3-point territory, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

Uthoff and the Hawkeyes (7-3) return to action Saturday when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to face Drake University (4-6) in the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic. Tipoff from Wells Fargo Arena is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (CT). The game will be streamed on computers and mobile devices via ESPN3 (WATCHESPN).
