Jenny Schuelke, Traci Helle, Jamie Fisher & Jadyn Spencer To Be Inducted Into IGHSAU Softball Hall of Fame


Solon's Jenny Schuelke, Traci Helle of Garnavillo, BCLUW's Jamie Fisher and Jadyn Spencer of Waterloo West are the newest inductees to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union's Softball Hall of Fame. The 2016 class will be inducted Friday at the Iowa State Softball Tournament   Schuelkestarred at Solon High School from 2002 to 2007. Playing shortstop and hitting leadoff, she was the table setter for the Solon’s high scoring teams that reached the state tournament all five seasons she played, bookending her career with state titles in her eighth grade and  senior seasons. She was named to four all-tournament teams and was captain of the 2007 all-tournament team as a senior. Schuelke owned a career batting average over .400, she was named to five all-state teams and was twice named to Elite All-State squads. As a senior, she was the Class 2A Player of the Year when she batted .452 with 10 home runs, 65 RBI’s and 60 runs scores. 

Schuelke played college softball at the University of Iowa and played a significant role for the Hawkeyes. A fulltime starter for her junior and senior seasons, she enjoyed her best year in 2010, hitting .274 with six home runs and 24 RBI’s. She was an academic all-Big Ten performer her senior season.
 
Helle  teamed with fellow all-stater Tracy Hammann from 1984 to 1988 and  the duo combined to win 227 wins with just 54 losses in a five year span. They  were just the second tandem in state softball history to have 100 or more pitching victories while graduating in the same class, leading Garnavillo to three state tournament appearances. Helle finished her career with a 127-41 record with a career ERA of 0.63. She struck out 1166 batters in her career while tossing 10 no-hitters and four perfect games. She was a three-time all-state selection and became the first 1A player to be named Iowa’s overall Player of the Year in 1998. 
Helle played her college ball at Mount Mercy and is the school’s career leader in wins and ranks in the top five in career strikeouts and earned run average.   
Fisher pitched for BCLUW  from 2006 to 2010 and is just one of 36 pitchers in Iowa history with 150 or more pitching victories, recording a 150-15 career record with three seasons winning 35 or more games. She pitched every inning of regional and state softball game that BCLUW played in during her five year career. She led the Comets to back-to-back state championship in 2009 and 2010, pitching 42 innings at the state tournament and allowing just one run while striking out 75 batters in six state tournament games.  When her career was finished, she had 1,796 career strikeouts, was a three time all-state selection and named Iowa’s Gatorade Softball Player of the Year in 2010.Fisher signed with Northern Iowa and became the Panthers’ career leader in strikeouts after her sophomore year and compiled a record of 79-44 with 767 career strikeouts. She was a two-time first team Missouri Valley All-Conference selection and helped the Panthers reach the NCAA Tournament in 2013.

Spencer starred at Waterloo West from 2007 to 2011, where she was a five year starter and five-time all-state selection for Waterloo West.  She hit 10 or more home runs her last three years of softball. As a sophomore, she hit .561 leading Waterloo West to its first-ever trip to the State Softball Tournament. As a junior, she posted a .613 batting average with 16 home runs and 59 RBI’s. Her final season was her finest, earning Class 4A Co-Player of the Year honors while batting .625 with 17 home runs, a Class 4A best 44 stolen bases with 73 walks and 37 RBI’s. Her 54 career home runs was the Iowa State Record until it was eclipsed last year.
Spencer signed with perennial softball power Alabama and played a key role in the Crimson Tide’s national championship team. She played in two more College Softball World Series. She enjoyed her best season in 2014 when she hit .339 with team highs in home runs and RBIs.
 

ADM's Rick Dillinger 2016 Recipient of IGHSAU Golden Plaque Award


ADM Head Softball Coach Rick Dillinger has been named the 2016 Softball recipient of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union's Golden Plaque of Distinction.
The  Golden Plaque of Distinction Award honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession. Dillinger will be honored at the 2016 State Softball Tournament prior to the start of theClass 4A state championship game Friday, July 22
Dillinger completed his 40th season of coaching softball. After turning around a Danville program, he landed at North Polk in 1982 and guided the Comets to 11 state tournament appearances, winning state championships in 2000, 2006 and 2008.  Dillinger has over 1,000 career victories and has won various coaching awards. He is a member of the IGCA Basketball and Softball Hall of Fame along with the Upper Iowa University and National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame. Character Counts named Dillinger as its Coach of the Year in 2011.
Dillinger has been active in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association for many years. He was president of the organization in 1995-96, has served on various committees. He and his wife Jetra have run the IGCA website since its inception. He is currently a member of the IGHSAU Softball Hall of Fame committee. 

“KIDS AT KINNICK” DAY SET FOR AUGUST 13

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa football team will stage its annual “Kids Day at Kinnick” Saturday, Aug. 13

Gates to Kinnick Stadium will open at 11 a.m., with the team’s practice scheduled to begin at noon. Team members will sign autographs at approximately 11:30 a.m., along the front of the west and south stands. Free schedule posters, cards, magnets, key tags, and rosters will be available inside all open gates.  Fans are discouraged from bringing additional items to be autographed.

Prior to the action on the field, activities will be held in the Krause Family Plaza, which opens to the public at 9 a.m. Hawkeye Fans are invited to visit the Kids Zone for inflatable games, face painting, temporary tattoos, other prizes, and a chance to meet Herky the Hawk.  The Iowa mascot will be available for photos from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Other kid-friendly activities will be provided by University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, Alliant Energy, Kubota Tractors, Iowa Corn, Noodles & Company, Delta Dental of Iowa, and Mellow Mushroom. Families can also learn more about joining the Junior Hawk Club and the benefits provided to those in the club.

The activities will also include a clothing drive by Stuff, Etc, to benefit the UI Children’s Hospital. Stuff, Etc is a quality consignment store – offering name brands at one-third retail prices.  Fans are encouraged to bring any gently used clothing (adult and youth sizes accepted), household items, and toys. All proceeds from donations will help raise money for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. The Stuff, Etc donation truck will be set up at 8:30 a.m.  Fans are welcome to drop off their donations outside of Gates A or D anytime between 8:30 and noon.

Free parking will be available on hard surface lots, while normal ramp fees will be charged. Concession stands will be open, with items being sold at half price.

Fans attending Kids Day should enter Kinnick Stadium at Gates A (south end zone) and E (west side). Regular season game-day search procedures will be in place and fans will be allowed to sit in the south and west stands. 

Fans should note that there will be no access to the playing surface of Kinnick.  Fans are also reminded that the annual “Kids Day at Kinnick” activity is designed primarily for the enjoyment of younger fans. Therefore, possession of an open container of beer or wine or consumption of hard liquor on University property, including parking lots, is prohibited by law.

Iowa opens its 2016 season Saturday, Sept. 3, hosting Miami, Ohio (2:30 p.m., ESPNU). Additional home games include Iowa State (Sept. 10, 6:30 p.m., BTN), North Dakota State (Sept. 17, 11 a.m., ESPN/ESPN2), Northwestern (Oct. 1, Homecoming, 11 a.m.), Wisconsin (Oct. 22, TBA), Michigan (Nov. 12, 7 p.m., ABC/ESPN); and Nebraska (Nov. 25, TBA).

The UI Athletics Ticket Office is selling single-game tickets for Iowa’s seven home games to the general public. Single-game tickets are priced as follows: $55 for Miami, Ohio; $65 for North Dakota State; $70 for Northwestern and Nebraska; $80 for Iowa State; and $85 for Wisconsin and Michigan.  Discount-priced youth tickets, for boys and girls high school-aged and younger, are available for the Miami, Ohio, North Dakota State, and Nebraska games at a cost of $25 each.

Tickets may be purchased online at hawkeyesports.com or by phone at 1-800-IA-HAWKS. The UI Athletics Ticket Office, located in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kinnick Stadium ticket windows (outside south end zone) will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 13.
