Tigers Win One At Denver Duals, Crowley Gets Milestone

DENVER — The Tipton wrestling team won their 15th dual match of the season Saturday at the Denver Duals. Also, news coming out of that event was Tipton junior John Crowley getting career victory 100 on the day.

Crowley joined teammate Ben Emrich in the 100-win club for his career. Crowley saw his win total for the year increased to 32 after the duals Saturday.

Tipton’s win came against Mediapolis in a 31-30 victory. Nolan Ohrt won by forfeit at 195 to give Tipton a 6-0 lead to start the dual. An 11-1 major decision by Austin Lenz at 106 and a forfeit win by Kaleb Mesick at 113 gave Tipton a 16-6 lead. Both teams had 120 and 126 open. John Crowley bumped up to 132 to wrestle Reese Thornburg at 132 and Crowley won an 8-6 decision to give Tipton a 19-6 lead. Mediapolis took control of the match, winning the next four matches, three by pin and one forfeit win by #3 ranked Brennan Swafford at 160.

Tipton would pull the dual out with two forfeit wins, one at 170 by Levi Mohr and another by Dylan Mente at 182 to set the final score at 31-30.

Tipton faced the third-ranked Class 1A team in the team rankings from The Predicament. The Cyclones have seven ranked wrestlers and six were in action against the Tigers. Tipton’s Austin Lenz started the dual with an upset over 6th ranked Brooks Meyer in a 6-0 decision match. Tipton trailed 9-3 after three matches, but a tech fall by John Crowley at 126 gave the Tigers five points in an 18-2 win in 4:00 and set the score at 9-8 Denver. Tipton would not win another match in the dual as Denver rattled off 57 straight points helped by seven pins and two forfeit victories. Brandon Hines (132), Lucas Barnum (152), Dylan Mente (170) and Jessie Lieser (285) all wrestled against top-10 ranked wrestlers in the dual.

Sioux City East beat the Tigers 60-21. Sioux City East won the first six matches to take a 36-0 lead, five of which by pin. Jessie Lieser won the first match of the dual, a 5-3 overtime victory over Patrick Conley. Lieser trailed 3-0 before tying the match at 3 and winning it with an overtime takedown. Austin Lenz then pinned Kamron Bergenske at 106 in 3:01 and Tipton had nine straight points to set the score at 36-9. Trailing 42-9, Tipton won back-to-back matches at 120 and 126 when Ben Emrich pinned Rafe McClendon in 1:05 and John Crowley pinned Cole Wilcox in 4:12. Those wins set the score at 42-21 with three matches left. Tipton did not get another victory in the dual.

Tipton lost to North Fayette Valley 47-24. The Tigers won four matches in the dual, two by pin and two by forfeit. Dylan Mente pinned Chase Cooley in 2:43 at 182 to begin the dual. The Tigers tied the dual at 12 and took a brief 18-12 lead with back-to-back wins by forfeit by Austin Lenz and Kaleb Mesick. The Tigers took a 24-12 lead with John Crowley pinned Dylan Lerch in 0:25 at 126. The Tigers would not score again as North Fayette Valley would win the next six matches and end the dual on a 35-0 run.

The Tigers won five matches against Stewartville, Minnesota. Chance Koch started the dual with a pin in 3:02 at 145 to give Tipton a 6-0 lead. A Dylan Mente pin over Caden King at 170 tied the match at 12-12. Kaleb Mesick got a pin at 106 and Ben Emrich and John Crowley each got decision victories for the other Tiger wins.

Tipton will be back on the mat twice this week. Thursday when they travel to Wilton to face Durant, Mid-Prairie and the host Wilton Beavers. The Tigers will travel to Wellman Saturday for the River Valley Conference meet. Sectional meets are a week later, Saturday, February 3 in Solon.

Back To Her Roots

By: Kaitlyn Thompson

A woodworking, forging, crocheting, fishing, softball playing math teacher whose name is Alex Curley. She considers herself, “A jack of all trades, master of none”. Alex Curley is a not so new teacher here at North Cedar and is an amazing addition to our group of math teachers, teaching geometry, statistics, and algebra A and B. While this is her first year teaching here it is not her first time here at North Cedar.
Curley graduated from North Cedar in 2012 and accomplished a lot in her four years. By the end of her high school career Curley was valedictorian, a four sport athlete, won the Silver Cord Volunteer scholarship, was involved in student council and math club, was a gallon blood donor, and received the Governor's Scholarship Award among many other scholarships.
After graduation she went on to attend Simpson College to play softball and rugby and work towards her degree to become a math teacher. Curley graduated from Simpson College in 2016 with the Breakdown National Player of the Week award and two NSCRO national championship appearances for rugby and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Arts degree in mathematics and minors in secondary education and coaching. Curley went into the workforce right away after graduation getting a teaching job at South Central Calhoun Middle School in Rockwell City, Iowa for a year before applying for the open math teacher position here back to her roots at North Cedar.
Curley was never really gone though. Since 2015 Curley has been assistant coaching for the Knights softball team, and will take the head coaching position this season.
Since Curley has been in school there have been quite a few changes. Curley says the biggest changes she noticed when she came back as a teacher instead of a student are the building and the grading system.
Curley said, “I miss the Stanwood high school like crazy. It doesn’t even feel like the same school I went to. It’s sad seeing the building gone”. Here at North Cedar we are also switching over to a new grading system: standards based grading. Not only has this system been hard on students it’s been rough on teachers trying to implement the system in classes as well, “I have very limited experience with standards based grading and I'm learning as we go. It's a big transition for me especially not being able to grade homework. In math, the more practice the better”. Standards-based grading is a big transition for all the teachers and students but with teachers helping the students and the students helping the teachers it is gradually getting easier for everyone.
Usually people can’t wait to get out of high school and their home town and never look back, but not Alex. Curley said, “Coming back to work at North Cedar was something I always hoped to do. I never thought I would be back in only my second year of teaching but I'm glad I am”. Coming back to your home town is one thing, but coming back to work with all the teachers you may or may not have liked is a whole nother thing, “It wasn't a difficult transition for me to go from student to colleague. All of the staff has welcomed me back with open arms”.
Although Curley is a first year teacher here she already knows what she wants to accomplish at this job she is so passionate about.
Curley said, “My goal while working here at North Cedar is to change the mindset of students. We have a tendency here to settle for just being ok. I don't want us to just be ok I want us to push harder and get better. We need to increase work ethic and accountability”. Curley is more than ready to be involved here at North Cedar and to help students be the best they can be when they leave high school to enter the real world.

Beavers Sweep Wildcats with 64-25 Home Win
WILTON — The Wilton girls basketball team won for the second time over Durant this season with a 64-25 win at home last Friday. The two teams played in December with the Beavers winning on the Wildcats home floor.

Durant hung tough early, trailing by just two points, 10-8 after the first quarter. However, a big 17-2 run by the Beavers in the second quarter opened up a 27-10 halftime lead for Wilton. The Beavers kept building on their lead, outscoring the Wildcats by ten points in the third and using a 15-4 fourth-quarter run to secure the win. Wilton outscored Durant 37 to 15 in the second half.

Three Beavers reached double figures in the game led by Emily Lange with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kali Milder scored a career-high 16 points off the bench and Kortney Drake added 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Beavers Net Big Win Over West Branch, 77-42
WILTON — For the fourth game in a row, the Wilton girls basketball team topped 70 points in a ball game. Two of the previous three were wins over West Liberty and Wapello and a loss to Monticello. Last Tuesday, the fourth time over 70 points netted a big RVC South victory over West Branch, 77-42. The win gave the Beavers a sweep over the Bears, as Wilton won at West Branch in late November, in the season’s second game, 76-74.

Knights Put Scare In 6th Ranked Cougars

CASCADE — The North Cedar Knights nearly knocked off the 6th ranked team in class 2A on their home court last Friday, falling 41-39 at Cascade. The Knights, coming off of a lopsided road win three days earlier at Iowa Valley packed a lot of confidence for their trip to Cascade. That confidence was on display early, as the Knights outscored the Cougars 12-7 in the first quarter to take a five-point lead. Cascade responded, outscoring the Knights 15-10 in the second quarter to tie the score at 22 at halftime.

Adjustments were made at halftime, but the game remained close. North Cedar was only outscored by two points in the second half, 19 to 17, but those two points were enough for the Cougars to slip by with a victory. The Knights trailed 34-33 after three quarters. The margin of victory was the closest this season for a game involving Cascade, win or lose. It was the closest game with an RVC North foe this season too.

The Cougars beat the Knights 47-33 at Clarence early in the season, and with the win sweeps the season series with North Cedar.

North Cedar had 15 made baskets and drilled four three-pointers in the game. The Knights had 34 rebounds, 12 assists, and 5 steals. The Knights were led in scoring by Lexi Crist with 18 points and Darby Hawtrey with 8. Nicole Sander scored 7 points off the bench.

Crompton gave the Regals a boost, scoring 12 points off the bench and making 4-of-6 shots. Three other Regals reached double digits. Kennedy Wallace and Alex Wiese each scored 14 points and Greyson Dumont scored 10 points.

TIPTON — The Tipton boys basketball team had a tough night on offense against the Cascade Cougars. The Tigers entered the basketball game averaging 64.6 points a game. In their home game against Cascade last Friday, the Cougars held the Tigers to only 32 points, half of their season average, in a 58-32 win. The Tigers fell to 8-3 while Cascade improved to 9-0.

Cascade took a 10-2 lead after the first quarter, holding the Tigers scoreless for over three minutes to start the game. Tipton trailed 7-2 with four minutes left in the first quarter, and turned up their defense, allowing only three points to the Cougars in the final half of the opening quarter.

The Tigers offense came alive in the second quarter with 14 points to the Cougars 13 points. That point outburst set the score at 23-16 at halftime. The third quarter was a game changer for the Tigers as the Cougars outscored them by ten in the quarter, using a 14-4 run to take a 37-20 lead to the final quarter. Cascade outscored the Tigers 21-12 in the final quarter.

No Tiger player reached double figures in the loss. The Tigers made 12 shots from the field and were 6-for-14 from the free throw line. Logan Hoffman and Jacob Tischuk led Tipton in scoring with each getting 8 points. Hoffman led in rebounding with 9. Two Cascade players scored in double figures with Haris Hoffman leading with 19 and Brock Simon scoring 15.

Tuesday, the Tigers began the week with a road game at Iowa City Regina. It was a match-up between the top two teams in the River Valley South Division. The winner would get a leg up on the top spot and gain momentum for the second half of the season. There, the Regals shot just over 50-percent for the game and connected on nearly half of their 15 three-point attempts in taking a 67-42 win.

Regina led 18-11 after the first quarter after taking a 7-0 lead with five minutes left in the opening quarter. Tipton used a 10-6 run to cut the Regal lead to 13-10 with two minutes later, but the Regals held a 7-point advantage after the first quarter. THe 18-11 score stood for the first three minutes of the second quarter as neither team shot the basketball well. Tipton cut the Regal lead to four points, 18-14 with four minutes left in the half. Regina however, would end the quarter on a 16-6 run to take a 34-20 halftime lead.

The Regals were seven points better than the Tigers in the third quarter (17 to 10) and took a 50-32 lead to the final quarter.

Regina held four of the five Tipton starters to under 10 points in the game. Logan Hoffman led Tipton with 18 points including going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Starters Trent Pelzer, Jacob Tischuk and Frank Bierman combined to score 9 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Tipton’s other starter, Andrew Stewart, scored 8 points.

Tigers Finish Week 2-1 after Loss In Cedar Rapids

By Ryan Stonebraker
Sports Editor

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Tipton boy’s basketball team finished a three-game week with two wins in three games to improve to 10-5 overall. The Tigers also sit at 8-4 in the River Valley Conference. The Tigers will host West Branch Tuesday. The Bears are two games back from the Tigers in the RVC standings. Tipton will then be off until Saturday when they play North Cedar. Tipton will travel to Durant on January 23. The Wildcats are close behind in the RVC standings, one game back in the loss column as of Tuesday, January 16.

Ranked Rebels Pull Away From Tigers In Second Half
CEDAR RAPIDS — The Tigers played in the first Wells Fargo Advisors Shootout Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. There, a familiar opponent was waiting in NE Goose Lake. The Rebels were fresh off of their first loss of the season against Cascade the previous Tuesday. The Rebels didn’t shot any ill effects though, breaking open a close 6-point game at halftime by outscoring the Tigers 34 to 19 in the second half of a 61-40 victory. The Rebels started the season 10-0 before the loss to the Cougars on January 9.

Logan Hoffman led Tipton in scoring with 21 points. No other Tipton player had more than six points. Luke Becker scored six points on two three-pointers while Andrew Stewart and Frank Bierman each scored 4 points. Stewart scored all of his points in the fourth quarter. Jacob Tischuk scored 3 points and Bryce Deerberg 2.

NE Goose Lake held the Tigers to only 14 rebounds in the game. Bierman led the Tigers with 7. He also led Tipton in steals with two. The Tigers struggled from the three-point line in the game, making only 2-of-17 attempts. The Tigers were 8-for-11 from the free throw line in the game.

Tipton had a tough first quarter, trailing 18-5 after the opening frame. The Tigers didn’t score their first point of the game until the game clock showed under 3-minutes in the first quarter. The Tigers rallied in the second quarter, outscoring the Rebels 16 to 9 to cut a 13-point deficit to six at halftime, 27-21.

Northeast outscored the Tigers by 11 in the third, 17-6 which gave them a 44-28 lead after three quarters. The Rebels and Tigers played close in the final quarter 17-13, but the Rebel lead was too large and the Tigers points were not enough to make up the deficit.

Three Rebels scored in double figures. Dawson Stoll led Northeast Goose Lake with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. He made four three-pointers, including a half-court buzzer beater at the end of the third. Luke Empen gave Tipton trouble under the basket, the 6-6 post, scored 16 points and had 9 rebounds including four offensive rebounds. Braeden Hoyer also hit for double figures, scoring 13 of his 15 points in the second half of the victory. Hoyer added 13 rebounds for a double-double. The Rebels had 37 rebounds as a team to go with 17 assists and 6 steals.

Tigers top 70 points for the second straight game in West Liberty Win
WEST LIBERTY — The Tipton boy’s basketball team scored over 70 points for the second time in a week, in a 77-44 win over West Liberty last Friday. The Tigers scored 81 points in an 81-63 win over Mid-Prairie last Tuesday. The 77 points made it six times over 70 points in 14 games. The victory gave the Tigers two wins over the Comets this season. Tipton beat West Liberty on December 19, 66-45 in the Tigers last game before Christmas.

Tipton took a 10-8 lead after the first quarter. Like the last time the two teams met, Tipton broke open a close game after one quarter to get a lopsided win. The same thing happened last week. Tipton used a 21-10 second-quarter run to take a 31-18 halftime lead. The Tigers kept the momentum going in the second half, scoring 46 points to the Comets 26.

THS senior Logan Hoffman scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed a team-best 14 rebounds. Luke Becker scored 18 points, going 6-for-9 from the three-point line in the game. Jacob Tischuk also reached double figures, scoring 11 points with 4 assists and 3 rebounds. Tipton made 25 shots from the field and shot 11-for-21 from the three-point line. Five different Tigers made a three-pointer in the game. Trent Pelzer scored 9 points off the bench. The Tigers had 36 rebounds as a team. After Hoffman, Frank Bierman had 7.

Brent Meyers and Seth Feldman reached double digits with 12 and 10 points. Tanner Iske and Spencer Daufeldt each had 9 points.

BROOKLYN — The Tipton wrestling team made the hour and 15-minute trek straight West to Brooklyn for their annual trip to the BGM Duals. There, the Tigers collected three more dual victories to improve to 13-4 on the season in dual meets. Tipton beat Gladbrook-Reinbeck-North Tama, BGM and Davis County. The Tigers fell to Gilbert and North Scott. The Tigers are back in action this Thursday at NE Goose Lake in a River Valley Conference quadrangular meet with West Branch, Wilton, and NE Goose Lake. The Tigers will wrestle in their final weekend tournament of the regular season Saturday at Denver, Iowa Duals. The Tigers will host a quadrangular meet on Tuesday, January 23 when they face Anamosa, Belle Plaine, and Davenport West. The River Valley Conference meet is four days later on January 27 at Mid-Prairie.

Against GR-NT, Tipton won eight matches including the five of the last six matches in a 45-35 dual win. Tipton trailed 29-15 after eight matches. A decision win by Brenden Leeper at 138 and a Dylan Mente pin over Zade Podhajsky in 1:31 were the only nine THS points. After GR-NT won at 220, Tipton won the final five of the last six matches, one by forfeit and four by pin.

Jessie Lieser pinned Xander Bradley in 3:29 at 285 after breaking a 0-0 match in the second period with a takedown before his pin. That pin set the score at 29-21. A forfeit win by Kaleb Mesick at 106 put drew Tipton closer at 29-27. Three straight pins by Austin Lenz at 113, Ben Emrich at 120 and John Crowley at 126 gave Tipton 18 more points and a 45-29 lead, they're first since leading 15-11 early in the dual. Lenz led 6-1 before getting his pin in 2:21. Emrich led 8-2, giving up two escape points before his pin in 49 seconds and Crowley led 5-0 before his pin in 1:26 after a takedown and 3-point near fall.

Against BGM, Tipton won 57-23 and won ten matches including eight straight to begin the dual. In the eight-match run, Tipton won five matches by forfeit. Thrown in were wins by pin from Kaleb Mesick at 106 and Ben Emrich at 120 and a sudden victory decision win by Brenden Leeper at 138. Tipton led 45-0 after the eight-match run of wins.

Tipton beat Davis County 37-34. Tipton led 17-0 to start the dual with a forfeit win by Brendan Nantz at 106, a Tech Fall wins by Austin Lenz at 113 and a pin by Ben Emrich at 120. Tipton continued its run, adding 11 more points on a tech fall win by Brandon Hines at 132 and a pin by Brenden Leeper at 138 to give the Tigers a 28-0 lead. Later in the dual, a Dylan Mente pin at 170 and a decision win by Nolan Ohrt at 182 gave Tipton a 37-13 lead thanks to the 9-0 run of points. Davis County ended the dual on a 21-0 run on two wins by pin and another by forfeit.

Against Gilbert, Tipton lost 52-24. The Tigers trailed 24-0 after the first four matches in the dual, losing three contested matches. A forfeit win by Jessie Lieser at 285 and an Austin Lenz pin of Gabriel Killian in 22 seconds cut the Gilbert lead in half, 24-12. Tipton trailed 30-12, but scored nine straight points on a forfeit win by Ben Emrich and a John Crowley decision win to set the score at 30-21. That is as close as the Tigers could get as Gilbert outscored Tipton 22-3 in the final five matches.

Against North Scott, Tipton lost 48-30. The Tigers led 24-0 after winning the first four matches in the dual. Brendan Nantz won by forfeit at 106. Three pins followed from Austin Lenz at 113, Ben Emrich at 120 and John Crowley at 126. North Scott won by tech fall at 126 to set the score at 24-5. Brendan Leeper set the Tiger lead at 30-5 with a pin over Blake Elgin in 3:45 at 138. That would be it for the Tigers, however, and the Lancers won the final eight matches, outscoring the Tigers 43-0 in the run.
