WILTON — The Wilton wrestling team will send five wrestlers to the state tournament this week in Des Moines. Wilton had nine wrestlers going for state bids at last Saturday’s district meet at home. Qualifying for the state meet were Kael Brisker at 106, Cory Anderson at 138, Trey Brisker at 152, Cameron Reddick at 195 and Calib Lilly at 220. The quintet will compete Thursday at the 2018 state wrestling tournament in Des Moines.

Beaver senior Trey Brisker won the 152-pound weight class and improved to 48-1 overall. Brisker is ranked number one at 152 heading into the state meet. Brisker pinned Durant’s Cameron Ragurrio in the semifinals in 1:00 to advance to the finals. There, he wrestled third-ranked Kaden Kilburg from Lisbon in the finals. In that match, Brisker would win by a 6-2 decision. Brisker led 2-0 after the first period after getting a takedown seven seconds into the match. Brisker would use a 4-1 point run in the second period to take a 6-1 lead. Brisker scored two takedowns in the period. Kilburg scored a point in the final period to set the score at 6-2, which was the final score.

Four Beavers placed second at their weight class. They were Kael Brisker at 106, Cory Anderson at 138, Cameron Reddick at 195 and Calib Lilly at 220.

Brisker improved to 37-16. He won an 11-8 decision over Tyler Siemen in the semifinals by lost to Wapello’s Colton Meeker in the finals by a 9-4 decision. Meeker had 34 wins. Brisker advanced to state as the runner-up after not having a wrestleback match.

Anderson improved to 41-7 and is ranked #8. Anderson pinned Cory Stewart in 1:16 in the semifinals. In the finals, Anderson was upset by a loss by pin in 5:30 by Javis Krieger from New London. Krieger improved to 40-5 with the win. Anderson advanced to state as the runner-up after not having a wrestleback match.

Reddick improved to 40-10 and is ranked tenth. He won a 6-1 decision over Rowan Udell from Iowa City Regina to reach the finals. There, he faced ninth-ranked Jake Jennett from Lisbon in the finals. There, Jennett won an 8-5 decision to claim the weight class. Reddick fell behind 5-2 after the first period scoring a two-point reversal halfway through the opening period. Reddick scored a takedown in the second period and an escape period in the third period for his five points. Reddick advanced to state as the runner-up after not having a wrestleback match.

Lilly improved to 25-23 and advanced to state. He was pinned by eighth ranked Logan O’Connor from Lisbon in the semifinals in 3:53. Lilly would pin Grant Tenley from North Cedar in the third-place match in 1:07. Lilly got a wrestleback match after O’Connor won the weight class by pin in the finals. In the wrestleback match, Lilly pinned New London’s Jaxon Allen in 4:47 to earn runner-up and a spot at state.

A pair of Beavers placed third at their respective weight classes. Eli Faison placed third at 160 and improved to 31-14 with a pin over Dan Burton of Highland in the third place match. Burton had 26 wins. Faison pinned Burton in 0:40. Faison had a takedown and 3-point nearfall run of points in a span of 12 seconds before getting the pin. Faison lost a 9-2 decision to 7th ranked Ryan Schott from Iowa City Regina. Schott lost to 3rd ranked Brennan Swafford from Mediapolis in the finals, nixing a wrestleback chance for Faison.

John Rife placed third at 195. Rife pinned Tyler Thurston from North Cedar in 4:00 in the semifinals, but lost to third-ranked Hunter Connor from Louisa-Muscatine in the finals. Rife was then in a wrestleback match with Ethan Allie from Belle Plaine. There, he fell by a tight 3-2 decision to place third.

Wildcats Put Scare Into Knights In Round One

CLARENCE — On paper, it was a mismatch. A 1-win team traveling to a 10-win team for the first round of the 2A Regional tournament should have been an easy win for the 10-win team. It was eventually, but the 1-win Durant Wildcats put a scare into the 10-win North Cedar Knights last Saturday in the first round of postseason play. North Cedar needed a 17-5 run in the final quarter to capture the 16-point, 48-32 win.

The game could not have started any better for Durant. The Wildcats raced out to a 14-3 lead before North Cedar made a field goal. The Wildcats led 8-0 three minutes into the game after two Kamryn Meyer left-handed lay-ups, a Hannah Happ basket in transition and an Amanda Wiese hoop. Later, another Happ bucket and a shot by Lauren Ralfs set the score at 12-1. North Cedar also was cold from the three-point line, missing their first six attempts to go with a 0-9 start from the floor. North Cedar scored their first basket on a Grace Proesch hoop with 1:05 left to play in the quarter.

The second quarter was a near flip in fortunes as North Cedar outscored the Wildcats 18 to 5 to take a halftime lead of four points, 23-19. Darby Hawtrey and Lexi Crist combined to score 14 of the Knights 18 points in the quarter. Hawtrey started a 9-0 Knight run with a bucket 20 seconds into the quarter and later made one of two free throws to tie the game at 14 with 4:46 left before halftime.

Kylie Kay got a basket to go with 4:40 left before halftime to break the tie and end the Knights 9-0 run. Later, Lexi Crist scored eight points on three straight possessions, two three-pointers and a bucket at the first half buzzer to send the Knights to halftime up 23-19.

Each team scored eight points in the third quarter, as North Cedar led by a slim four-point, 31-27 lead after three quarters. North Cedar would pull away from the Wildcats though with a 17-5 fourth-quarter run to go from up four heading to the fourth to winning by 16 by games end.

Durant made 15 field goals in the game but was only 2-for-9 from the free throw line. Kamryn Meyer led Durant in scoring with 10 points and rebounds with 18, recording a double-double. Kylie Kay and Amanda Wiese each had 6 points. Durant got all 32 points from their starting five players. Hannah Happ and Lauren Ralfs each scored five points. Happ led in assists with 4 while Meyer had a team-high 4 steals.

North Cedar made 14 shots from the field, but made 26 trips to the free throw line, making 15 of those tries. The Knights also made five three-pointers in the game.

North Cedar got 31 of their points out of their starting five players. Lexi Crist led North Cedar in scoring with a game-high 17 points and 7 rebounds off the bench. She was 6-for-16 from the field including making all five of the Knights three-point attempts. Tessa Fields also reached double figures in the game, scoring 10 points. Darby Hawtrey scored 9 points and had 7 rebounds. Fields had 5 assists and Nicole Sander had 7 steals to lead North Cedar.

Durant ends the 2017-18 season with a record of 1-21. The Wildcats will say goodbye to seniors Amanda Wiese (4.2 ppg, 121 rebounds), Kaitlyn Wiese (0.1 ppg), Lauren Ralfs (5.1 ppg 86 rebounds), Brittany Kahl (0.1 ppg) and Emily Seligman (7 made 3’s, 1.9 ppg, 27 rebounds).

The Knights evened their record to the .500-mark at 11 wins and 11 losses. The Knights will play #13 Bellevue at Bellevue Tuesday night, February 12. The Comets beat North Cedar by eight points in Bellevue in mid-December and by only three points last month in Clarence, 38-35. The Comets are led by three players scoring in double figures in Camryn Reeg (12.7 ppg), Giana Michels (12.0 ppg) and Emma Kelchen (10.9 ppg).

The Knights rebounded well against the Comets in both games. Lexi Crist scored 16 against the Comets in the first game and Darby Hawtrey averaged 10 points and 13.5 rebounds in both games against Bellevue.

Tigers Survive and Advance To Regional Semifinals

By Ryan Stonebraker
Sports Editor

WELLMAN — Not too many folks gave the Tipton girls basketball team a chance to win a game in the postseason, let alone a road game against a conference opponent that they have lost to twice before. However, that is what happened. The Tigers survived and advanced to the Class 3A Regional semifinal game Wednesday in Davenport against 7th ranked Davenport Assumption after a 57-55 victory at Mid-Prairie last Saturday. The win was the second year in a row that Tipton has begun the postseason with a road win. The Tigers won at Alburnett last season before losing at Iowa City Regina in the next round. The Tigers sit two games from the Class 3A state tournament, but that is far away. Up next is Assumption, a team with just 13 wins, but one that is in the larger school MAC conference. The winner will play the winner of Camanche-Central Lee on Saturday at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf.

“We did a good job of controlling what we can do and not getting into doing things that we can’t do. I think we handled this game and different pressures well tonight,” said Tipton girls basketball coach Chad Rezac.

“We executed our game plan and had a warrior like an attitude. We could have gone into this game and thought ‘oh we lost twice before, do we have it in us to win’. But we didn’t fall for that. We played hard, played smart and played together and that was what won it for us,” said Rezac.

Tipton led 8-7 after the first quarter and started the second quarter on a 7-3 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Tigers led 27 to 23 at halftime. The Golden Hawks erased the Tigers four-point lead with a 15-11 third-quarter run to tie the score at 38 after three quarters. In the final quarter, Tipton outscored Mid-Prairie 19-17 to secure the win.

Tipton set the tone of the ball game early, matching Mid-Prairie scores with scores of their own. The Golden Hawks star Addie Rath scored the game's first points on a three-point play chance for a 3-0 lead. Amanda Smith scored the Tigers first points with 6:00 left in the first to put the score at 3-2 Golden Hawks. Smith’s second bucket of the game pulled Tipton within 5-4 with 3:15 left in the quarter. Kamryn Chapman played off the bench in the game and scored 14 in the game on 5-for-7 shooting. She also collected four free throws. She scored her first points with 1:30 left in the quarter to give Tipton their first lead of the game. After the Golden Hawks took an 8-7 lead, THS answered. Emily Hermsen came up with one of her team-high three steals and took it the length of the court for a lay-up and an 8-7 Tipton lead. That would be the score after the first quarter.

In the second, a Smith hoop gave Tipton a 10-9 lead early. With the score tied at 10-10, Tipton scored the next five points to take their biggest lead of the first half to that point, at 15-10. Zoe Rezac drilled a three-pointer and Hermsen got her second bucket to go after slicing through the Mid-Prairie defense for the points.

Later in the quarter, Tipton used an 8-1 run to take their biggest lead of the first half, seven points at 25-18. Two baskets and two free throws by Amanda Smith were part of her 12 first-half points along with buckets by Chapman and Hermsen accounted for the points. The Tigers would go to the halftime break up 27-23.

The Tigers held the lead in the third quarter until the 4-minute mark when Mid-Prairie took a 34-33 lead. Tipton grabbed the lead back and led by three 37-34 with two minutes left in the quarter before the score was again tied, this time at 38, going to the final quarter.

The score was tied at 42 with 6:00 left in the game when the Tigers took control, going on a 7-0 run to equal their biggest lead of the game at 7 points, 49-42. Hermsen and Chapman had hoops, Chapman had a free throw and Samantha DeMoss scored her only two points of the game with two free throws in the run. The Tigers held a two-point lead at the three, two and one-minute marks of the fourth quarter and settled in for a two-point, 57-55 victory.

Tipton nearly shot 50-percent for the game, making 20-of-46 shots from the field. The Tigers got to the free throw line 25 times and made 16 attempts, nearly making more free throws than the Golden Hawks attempted (20). Three Tigers reached double figures in the game, led by Amanda Smith with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Smith was 10-for-16 from the field and missed only one of her eight free throw attempts. Chapman finished with 14 and Emily Hermsen scored 11 points and added a team-high 8 assists and 3 steals.

Mid-Prairie was led in scoring by Addie Rath and Shae Becker with 15 points and 11 rebounds each. Both fouled out in the fourth quarter. Anna Vilovchik added 8 points including two made three-pointers.

Rath recently became just the fourth Golden Hawk player in program history to top 1,000 points. The others are school leader Jessica Larsen (1,190), Emily Hershberger (1,156) and Sarah Larsen (1,060). Rath also recently signed to play basketball at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.

The Tigers will travel to Davenport Wednesday to play 7th ranked Davenport Assumption. The Knights will enter the game 14-8 and their record is deceiving. THS junior goes to state as Sectional and District Champ

SOLON — State bound. That is the message that Tipton junior John Crowley sent out Saturday afternoon after coming out of the class 2A DeWitt district meet as the champion of the 126-pound weight class. Crowley won both matches on the day to earn his first state tournament trip. The 2018 individual state tournament begins this Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. for class 2A. Crowley will wrestle there, in a first-round match against Mitchell Joines from Sioux City Heelan.

At the tournament in Solon, there were 23 ranked wrestlers. Solon came out of the district meet with five state qualifiers with both Dubuque Wahlert and Dyersville-Beckman next with four. Solon won the team race with 106 points. Dyersville-Beckman placed second with 73.5 points and Dubuque Wahlert was third with 70. Tipton scored 18.5 points, all from Crowley.

Crowley had the top seed at the weight class. Other seeds were Morgan Rowley from Anamosa, 2nd; Aidan Dall from Solon, 3rd; and Keegan Scheeler from CPU, 4th. Rowley and Crowley were sectional champs and Dall and Scheeler were sectional runners-up.

In the first district semifinal, Crowley won an 18-1 tech fall in 5:19 over Keegan Scheeler from Center Point-Urbana. Scheeler had a record of 23-12. Crowley scored two takedowns and a 3-point near fall in the first period, giving up only an escape point while taking a 7-1 lead after the first period. Crowley added his third takedown of the match with 1:04 left in the second period and, extended his lead to 12-1 with 45 seconds left in the match with his second 3-point near fall. Crowley used a 6-0 run in the final period to claim the tech fall. Crowley scored the points on two, 3-point near falls. In the match, Crowley had four 3-point near falls and three takedowns to amass 18 points.

In the second semi-final, Anamosa’s Morgan Rowley won an 8-4 decision over Aidan Dall of Solon. Rowley, ranked 7th at his weight class with a record of 46-5, pinned Dall at the WaMac conference meet last month in the quarterfinals at 126, in 5:07. His win set up a showdown with Crowley for the 126-pound title.

In the finals, Crowley beat Rowley 15-3 by major decision and saw his points, when scored, come in bunches. Crowley wasted little time in getting a lead, outscoring Rowley 7-1 in the opening period. A takedown and 3-point near fall in a span of 12 seconds set the tone of the match and the score at 5-0 Crowley. Rowley would escape to score a single point to set the score at 5-1, but Crowley responded with a takedown with 29 seconds left in the period to take a 7-1 lead.

Rowley started on top in the second period and got Crowley in a bad spot, scoring a 2-point near fall on the Tiger junior to get the match to 7-3. Crowley worked out of the jam to score an escape point three seconds later at 1:19 left in the second period to set the score at 8-3. Crowley then turned the tables on Rowley, being the aggressor himself, and scored his own takedown and two-point near fall for five points in a span of four seconds to take a 12-3 lead to the final period.

In the final period, Crowley scored three more points on an escape and a late takedown with 25 seconds left, to set the final at 15-3.

The rest of the bracket played out with Aidan Dall pinning Scheeler from CPU in 2:21 in the third-place match. Dall however, was denied a wrestleback chance as he lost to Rowley earlier in the day in the second semifinals.

The 2018 traditional state tournament begins Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines and runs through Saturday. The class 2A schedule is as follows: Thursday, February 15 - 9:00 a.m.-noon (1st round and 1st round consolations); Friday, February 16 - 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (2A quarterfinals and 2nd round consolations) and 2:30-5:30 p.m. (2A semifinals and 3rd round consolations); Saturday, February 17 - 10:00 a.m.-2:15 p.m. (2A consolation semifinals and finals) and 6:00 p.m. - Finals for all classes.

Crowley Will Face Mitchell Joines
DES MOINES — Tipton junior John Crowley will wrestle Mitchell Joines from Sioux City Heelan in the first round. Joines, a freshman, comes to state with a record of 38-12 and the runner-up at his weight class in class 2A district 8. He advanced to state by pinning his district semifinal opponent in 5:40 and placing second after a 5-0 decision loss to Isaac Bryan from Sergeant-Bluff Luton in the finals of the 126-pound weight class. Bryan had a record of 40-13 and also was a freshman. The two met the week before in the sectional meet with Bryan winning that match as well.

At the sectional meet, Joines had to wrestle back to earn a trip to the district meet. He reached the finals where he lost to Bryan by a 4-0 decision. He won by a 19-8 major decision in a wrestleback match.

The winner of the match will face the winner of top-ranked Eric Fraught from Clear Lake (48-0) and 6th ranked Hunter Pfantz from West Marshall (39-6). Also in Crowley’s half of the 126 brackets on the lower pod is 3rd ranked Philip Ihde from Decorah and #4 Jalen Schropp from Williamsburg.

Baker and Rife had to wrestle-back for a true second-place finish.

Tigers Struggles Continue With Two More Losses

By Ryan Stonebraker
Sports Editor

TIPTON — Tipton rolled out the welcome mat for Wilton and Monticello last week, but their guests were not kind, beating the hometown Tigers in each game. Wilton beat Tipton 60-40 last Tuesday and Monticello came away with a 53-31 win last Friday. The losses set the Tigers record at 6-13 heading to the final week. Tipton will host state-ranked Iowa City Regina Tuesday before traveling to Columbus Junction Thursday for a makeup game. The Tigers and Wildcats were to play this past Monday, February 5, but snowy weather forced the cancellation of events in Eastern Iowa. The Tigers will enter this week on a three-game losing streak after winning at Durant on January 23.

Against Wilton, Tipton saw a close game after one quarter gets away. The Tigers trailed by just two points, 15-13 after the first quarter. Even though the Beavers outscored Tipton 12-8 in the second quarter, the Beaver lead was six points, 27-21 at halftime. In the second half, Wilton outscored the Tigers 33 to 19 including a big 18-9 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Kamryn Chapman led Tipton in scoring after making her first varsity start. She scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Emily Hermsen scored 9 points while Amanda Smith scored 8 points and had a team-high 16 rebounds to go with 4 assists and 3 steals. Tipton made 14 field goals and was 9-for-16 from the free throw line. Tipton had 39 rebounds in the game. The Tigers lost to the Beavers 54-39 back on December 15 in Wilton.

The Beavers were led by juniors Kortney Drake and Emily Lange. Each scored 21 points. Lange on 9-for-17 shooting and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. She recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. Drake shot 7-for-11 and made 7-of-9 free throw attempts. She had 5 steals, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. Tipton’s defense held Aubrey Putman to just one point and 4 rebounds. Putman came into the game averaging 12.6 points and was the Beavers leading rebounder. Wilton shot nearly 50-percent from the field in the game and made 13-of-19 free throws. The Beavers had 23 rebounds.

Friday, Tipton fell 53-31 to Monticello. The Panthers are ranked in Class 3A in the latest Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union poll. The Panthers led by only three, 13-10 after the first quarter, but a 13-4 second-quarter run gave Monticello a 26-14 halftime lead. The Panthers extended their lead by five after three quarters, 37-20 and outscored the Tigers 16-11 in the final quarter.

Three Panthers reached double figures in the win. Taylor McDonald scored 19, Lauren Ries 16 and Maddie Fellinger 10 for Monticello. Jordan Kuper chipped in 6 points and 12 rebounds.

Samantha DeMoss led Tipton in scoring with 10 points on 5-for-11 shooting. Emily Hermsen and Allie Ryan each scored 6 points.

The Tigers will begin Class 3A postseason play Saturday at Mid-Prairie. The game will be at 7:00 p.m. in Wellman. The winner of that game will play at Davenport Assumption next week in a class 3A Regional Semifinal.
