  TIPTON — Not too many teams around the state of Iowa had the schedule that the Tipton Tigers had last week. Maybe none did. Tipton faced the top-3 ranked teams in their class, all from the River Valley Conference. The Tigers played at No. 2 Iowa City Regina, at No. 1 Cascade, and hosted No. 3 Wilton last week in ve River Valley Conference games. The latest class 2A rankings put out by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association for the third straight week have had the three schools ranked in the top- 3. Wilton was the top-ranked team before losing to Iowa City Regina, and Cascade has been the top ranked team the past two weeks as they are unbeaten. Regina has held steady at number two. In playing the tough schedule, Tipton fell in all ve games. However, it wasn’t before they put a scare in both Cascade and Wilton, even though the nal scores will not re ect that if you weren’t at the games.

Beavers Sweep Tigers, But It Wasn’t Easy
  TIPTON — The Tipton Tigers nished out the week last Friday, hosting the third ranked Beavers in a make-up doubleheader. The Tigers and Beavers were to play earlier this season to start the year, but was rescheduled due to the Wilton boy’s golf team looking at a state golf tournament qualification. The Beavers did not qualify for state, however, but the games were played last week. There, Wilton won game one 10-2 and game two, 11-1 in six innings.
  In game one, Tipton led for 6 1/3 innings of the game. The last part of the game however, was not in the Ti- gers favor. Wilton went from certain loss to certain win. Wilton trailed 2-1 with one-out in the seventh, however, Wilton scored nine runs to take game one, 10-2.
  Tipton broke a scoreless game with a run in the bottom of the second. The Tigers sent ve batters to the plate and plated one run. Quinten Mesick reached base to lead o the inning and advanced to second on an error and reached third on a Kael Jauron single. Mesick would score on a Nile Schuett single. Tipton from time to time plays an aggressive style of play and sometimes tries to steal home. The Tigers tried it with Kael Jauron. The Beavers however, saw it, had McCrabb throw home quick, and catcher Brock Hartley narrowly applied the tag on Jauron for the out. The message was sent though that the Tigers were there to play.
  Tipton added another run in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 2-0. An RBI single by Luke Becker plated Trent Pelzer who had reached on a single earlier in the inning.
  Tipton starter Luke Becker kept Wilton o balance, frustrating the Beavers. Wilton advanced runners to second and third in the first, but could not push a run over. From the second to fifth innings, Wilton sent no more than four batters to the plate in any of the innings. Wilton finally started to solve Becker in the sixth, sending ve batters to the plate and scoring their first run to set the score at 2-1. The Beavers would keep their new momentum into the seventh where they would take command of the game by scoring nine runs. The big hit was a one-out, three-run double by Tyler Hartman that opened the floodgates of runs, scoring Nolan Leaton, Colin Mc- Crabb, and Jared Townsend. Tipton tried to stop the run, changing pitchers twice in the inning, but it was not to be. McCrabb, who was in line to take the pitching loss, came out and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn the win. McCrabb struck out the final two Tiger batters.
  Luke Becker took the tough loss. He worked 6 1/3 innings and gave up ve runs on nine hits. He walked two batters. Elliot Cummins and Kael Jauron pitched the remaining 2/3 innings in relief and combined gave up five runs on two hits and walked four including three hit batsmen.
  Tipton had four hits in the game off of McCrabb. Becker had an RBI and a single as did Nile Schuett. Jauron and Trent Pelzer each had hits. Pelzer and Dylan Mente each had stolen bases. Mente reached base via a walk.
  Wilton All-Stater Colin McCrabb pitched a complete game in seven innings. He struck out eight Tigers and walked one. He gave up four hits and two runs in the game. Wil- ton had ten hits and had two players with multi-hit games. Cory Ander- son and Chantz Stevens each had two hits. McCrabb, Brayton Wade, Anderson, and Tyler Hartman each had 2 RBI’s. Stevens and Hartman each doubled. Jared Townsend, Garrett Bohnsack, and Brock Hartley also had hits for the Beavers in the game.
  In game two, the final reflected a one-sided game and in the end, it was, but it is how the final score came to be. The Tigers scored the games first run in the bottom of the first inning. Dylan Mente drew a lead-off walk to start the first. Mente went to second on a Trent Pelter single. Mente stole third and would score two batters later on a fielder’s choice by Luke Becker. That score held until the third when Wilton tied the game with a single run in the third and took the lead, 2-1 with a single run in the fourth. Wilton scored twice in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
  The Beavers took control of the game, getting into the Tigers bull- pen, and scoring seven runs to see the score swell to 11-0. Wilton sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. In the inning, Jared Townsend doubled, Brock Hartley had two singles, and Colin McCrabb, Chantz Stevens, and Garrett Bohnsack all had singles in the inning.
  Wilton All-State pitcher Jared Townsend picked up the win after six innings. He struck out 14 Tigers and walked two. He gave up only two hits. Townsend gave up the rst run of the game, but settled down after that. From the second through fourth innings, Townsend retired nine straight Tigers, six by strikeout. Wilton had nine hits in the game with three players having two hits.
  Colin McCrabb was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI’s and Brock Hartley was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Chantz Stevens also had two hits. Townsend had a double and two RBI’s while Cory Anderson and Garrett Bohnsack each had hits and a RBI. Anderson had a double.
  Karl Jauron was one of three Tipton pitchers in the game and took the loss. Jauron pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on two hits. He struck out two and walked four. Colby Kleppe and Elliot Cummins handled the rest of the game in relief. Tipton had hits from Trent Pelter and Luke Becker. Becker had an RBI and Pelzer a stolen base in the game. Monte and Cole Syring also reached base by drawing a walk.
  The Tigers found out during the game that their Saturday tour- nament at Pella Christian was cancelled due to the extreme heat that took over the state last weekend. The Tigers were to play Gilbert and the host, Pella Christian Eagles. The Tigers are home Tuesday and Thurs- day. The Tigers renew their annual rivalry with North Cedar Thursday.

INCREASE IN BIG TEN CONFERENCE REQUIRED GAMES IMPACTS FUTURE HY-VEE CLASSIC

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa announced on Thursday this will be the final year of The Hy-Vee Classic in Des Moines. The one-day event started in 2012, featuring the four Division I men’s basketball programs from the state of Iowa. Each year, Iowa (Big Ten) and Iowa State (Big 12) rotated playing Drake and Northern Iowa, members of the Missouri Valley Conference.

“In our last agreement we added language that provided each institution an opportunity to opt out of the remainder of the contract if they reached 22 required games by the conference,” said Gary Barta, University of Iowa Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics chair. “The addition of two conference games is good for our fans, the Big Ten Conference and our strength of schedule, but unfortunately it created some scheduling challenges that impacts this event.”

Several changes have occurred since the creation of The Hy-Vee Classic. Maryland and Rutgers were added to the Big Ten Conference, and the Missouri Valley Conference added Valparaiso and Loyola after the departure of Wichita State and Creighton. In addition to the Big Ten’s announcement of a 20-game league schedule, the Gavitt Tipoff Games, featuring the Big Ten versus the Big East was also introduced in 2015.

The Hawkeyes will make their final appearance in the men’s basketball event against Northern Iowa on Dec. 15, 2018, at Wells Fargo Arena. Northern Iowa and Drake are not currently included on future Iowa men’s basketball schedules. The annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk game between Iowa and Iowa State will continue as scheduled.

“We truly appreciate the support of the fans in central Iowa, the Wells Fargo Arena staff, and Hy-Vee for their commitment to this event,” added Barta. “As we have in the past, the Hawkeyes will continue to evaluate playing in-state schools on a sport-by-sport, case-by-case basis.”

Iowa has posted a 6-1 record since the first year of the event in 2012.

Prime Time Ends 31-Year Run of Summer Basketball

IOWA CITY — Founder and Director of the Prime Time League Randy Larson announced today that the league has run its' course and will not play this summer.

"With the opportunity created by an NCAA rule change to have four hours of practice together each week in the summer, and another four hours of individual skill work with the players, there just isn't a need for it.  When we started 32 years ago, college coaches couldn't even watch their players scrimmage; now they can actually coach them all summer, which is great for the players."

"Between summer school classes and homework, strength and conditioning workouts, and now eight hours of either practice or skill drills, the coaches at Iowa and UNI concluded that their players were just being asked to do too much.  They correctly wanted the summer to still be the off-season, albeit one with much more development than it used to have when coaches didn't get to help the players improve."

"I completely agree with that view. I wanted Prime Time to be an arena where the kids could have some fun in the off-season, and to have our games be a little more structured than the pickup games they were playing, and to be able to play in front of our greatly-interested fans.  The fans made the games special.  But the players' well-being has to come first.  While I'm sure some of the players that I loved the most, really loved playing in Prime Time, I'm sure not all did.  I didn't want the percentage who saw it as too much to grow.  We had a lot of fun moments.  We tried to influence the guys into playing together, playing hard, playing smart."

"I'm grateful for all the fans who attended, all the players who played, and all the coaches, scorekeepers, media, refs, sponsors, North Liberty Rec Center and Sportsplex staff, and helpers (particularly my secretary Diane Norden) who made it happens in a fairly professional way for a long time."

"I'll never forget a ninth-grade Ricky Davis dunking on grown men;

 Jess Settles bull-moosing his way into the lane and playing at full speed;

Matt Gatens playing the right way every play;

Ryan Bowen showing every player how to work your way into the NBA by going to the boards every trip;

Wyatt Lohaus becoming a league MVP;

Chris Street winning a championship game and then giving his jersey to a little kid;

Mike Born traveling all the way over from Iowa State or Des Moines to show our younger guys what full-speed effort really is;

All the many less-heralded small college players like Jeff Hrubes or Pat McCool or David Kruse who got to show they were just as good as a D1 player;

and especially all the players who embraced the idea of playing as a team, not a collection of individuals."

"Perhaps my favorite moment of all the years was when a particularly skilled player, who went one-on-one his whole life, made the extra pass with 3 seconds to go in the championship game instead of forcing a shot up.  The guy he threw it to miss, and we lost but the fact that he had embraced the idea of making the right play will never leave me."

"Our Prime Time coaches were heroes in a thankless job, helping us stay true to the mission of playing the right way, best you can without practices.  I always kept in my mind what George Raveling told Tom Davis, 32 years ago, that he should ask me to keep playing in the pickup games in the off-season before summer leagues were allowed, because, 'His pickup games are better than my games were at Washington State.'   I know he was joking, but the idea that pickup games didn't have to be junk is certainly something a lot of guys have embraced.  People love to play the game with determination, and a passion for winning, and showing how winning happens more often when you play together, has been fun.  For allowing me to do that, and particularly for recruiting players who loved to play that way, I owe a huge thanks to Tom Davis, Steve Alford, Todd Lickliter and Fran McCaffery."

"A special thanks to Ben Jacobson and Greg McDermott and the other UNI coaches who always had players you loved on your team in Prime Time.  Everybody loved drafting them--they were indispensable to the league because they played so hard and always the right way and almost never failed to show up despite the extra travel for them, and always made their school and fans proud.  The story of how good UNI has been for so long, with very few so-called blue-chippers, is their story. Their guys are warriors."

"Thanks for all of it.  I started doing it for the players but the people who for three decades have stopped me and said they enjoyed coming to the games were more the reason I kept doing it. It was a treat."

2017 Wilton Graduate Evan Reifert Drafted By Texas Rangers

By Ryan Stonebraker
Sports Editor

WEST PALM BEACH, FL — Normally when one gets out of the shower, they are preparing for doing something else in the day. In the busyness of getting ready, phone calls can be interrupted for that process. For 2017 Wilton graduate Evan Reifert, a phone call while getting ready after getting cleaned up after a workout last week turned out to be a welcoming interruption.

“I was literally getting out of the shower after working out, and my college coach called to tell me that I was drafted by the Texas Rangers,” said Reifert.

“My college coach Travis Hergert called me and was like ‘what the heck, man?’” Reifert said. “I had absolutely zero clues what he was talking about and he was like ‘you just got drafted.’” he said.

Reifert, who is playing baseball this summer for a wood-bat league in Florida, was a 30th round selection by the American League Texas Rangers last week in the 2018 Major League baseball draft. He was selection No. 899.

Reifert said that he followed the draft for the first two days, but went about his business the third and day of the draft. A representative from the Rangers contacted him shortly after the draft started.

“The Rangers actually gave me a call and said that there is a chance that I could get drafted by them, but it would be later. They said they were not sure, and it was uncertain,” he said.

“After the conversation, I was like, well that’s done, I won’t get drafted this year. I watched the first two days, but not the last day,” said Reifert.

Reifert finished his freshman season at North Iowa Area Community College this past spring where he pitches for the Trojans. Reifert, a right-handed pitcher from Wilton, was 1-1 with 28 strikeouts and 21 walks in 17 2/3 innings pitched in his freshman season at NIACC. He was the second player with NIACC ties to be drafted in this year’s draft. Reifert is the fifth player at NIACC to be selected in the MLB first-year player draft.

Reifert said that playing pro baseball has been a dream of his since he was little.

“I want to try to play professional baseball one day. It is really just unreal. I have dreamed about this my entire life, as a little kid playing pro ball has always been a dream. It’s crazy how close it is right now,” he said.

Reifert still needs to meet with the Rangers, where he expects they will make an offer to him to sign. Right now, Reifert plans to return to NIACC for another year to keep getting better and keep getting stronger. Then, in 2019 see if his work next year improves where he is drafted.

“This is really cool. Getting drafted this year, it really builds my confidence up. I mean an MLB team sees my skills and those skills are good enough to be drafted. It makes me want to keep working hard and keep getting better,” he said.

The Texas Rangers are in the American League for Major League Baseball and play in the West Division with four other teams, the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Oakland A’s and the Los Angeles Angels. The Rangers have seven minor league affiliates with the top level at Triple-A, the Round Rock Express in Texas.

The Rangers first round selection, Cole Winn was selected at No. 15 and is out of high school (Luthern High School in Orange, CA). The Rangers made 40 selections over the 2018 MLB first-year player draft last week selecting 27 pitchers. The Rangers picked pitchers in ten of their first 14 picks. Overall of the 40 draft picks, 15 are high school kids.

Reifert was injured a lot of the 2017 summer baseball season and didn’t pitch much. As a beavers his junior season, he pitched three no-hitters in the summer of 2016 on his way to a 9-0 season in 49 innings. He had 92 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.29 that summer. For his career, he was 15-3 in 111 2/3 innings. He had 210 career strikeouts and 74 walks. Though he didn’t pitch much last season, he batted well with 44 hits, 9 home runs, 34 RBI’s and a batting average of .454.

Wilton baseball coach Jake Souhrada said that Reifert has put in the work to get this chance.

“It’s exciting for the town of Wilton to have a kid get drafted and have an opportunity to play at the next level,” said Souhrada.

“He put in a lot of time, he’s a kid that loves baseball and puts his heart and soul into it,” he said.

The Wildcats started their run of three games in a two-day period last Friday, welcoming in class 5A No. 3 Dubuque Hempstead. There, the Wildcats outlasted their opponents with a

Durant took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. A Hannah Happ RBI single in the first and a run scoring on an error in the second gave Durant the early 2-0 lead.

Hempstead scored one run in the fourth and tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the sixth. Durant could not get the winning run home in the bottom of the sixth despite getting a runner to third base. Durant went in order in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.

Hempstead put some pressure on the Wildcats, getting the bases loaded in the top of the eighth and getting a runner to second in the top of the ninth.

Ally Happ tried to start a two-out rally in the eighth with a single. She stole second base to get into scoring position but would be left stranded. In the bottom of the ninth, Durant broke through.
