SOLON — Finally. The Wilton Beaver baseball team has done it. After a 4-0 mild upset over class 2A No. 4 Dyersville-Beckman in Solon in a substate final, Wilton will return to the state tournament. The Beavers, ranked 5th, has been close four other times in the past ten years, and finally broke through. Wilton advances to play at the state tournament in Des Moines at Principal Park, home of the AAA Iowa Cubs. The state tournament moved to Des Moines in 2005 after playing in two locations, Carroll and Marshalltown for years prior to that. The Beavers are the number-2 seed after collecting a record of 25-5 this season to date.
Wilton makes their first state appearance since the 2005 season when they won the class 2A title with a perfect 42-0 season. In the past ten seasons, Wilton has played in four substate games and lost three times in district final games. The Beavers were 0-4 in their last four substate games including losses to Dyersville-Beckman in 2009 and 2014, Davis County in 2010 and Iowa City Regina last year.
The Beavers played at Solon last year in a 2A substate game against Iowa City Regina. Wilton led 4-0 after four innings before Regina outscored them 11 to 3 over the final three innings.
Wilton had a tremendous pitching effort out of ace Jared Townsend and reliever Cory Anderson. Townsend started and pitched 5 1/3 innings. He struck out 13 Blazers and walked six. He surredered four hits. Anderson pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief to earn the save. He struck out two of the six batters he faced and did not allow a hit in two scoreless innings.
Dyersville-Beckman entered the postseason with two losses to Western Dubuque after a season best 8-game win streak. The Blazers reached the substate game with wins at home over Northeast 11-1, and Camanche 4-1 in the district final.
Wilton advanced to the substate game with home wins over Durant 5-0, and West Branch 3-0 in the district final game. Wilton will enter the state tournament on a season best 8-game win streak. The beavers have shutout all three of their postseason foes and have posted shutouts in six of the eight games in the win streak and they have eight shutouts in their last eleven games.
Wilton had six hits in the game. Chantz Stevens was 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored to lead the Beavers. Brayton Wade had a RBI single and Jared Townsend, Nolan Leaton and Brock Hartley each had hits. Cory Anderson reached base via a walk and Leaton had the only Wilton stolen base in the game.

Beavers Rally In Quarterfinal Game Falls Short

FORT DODGE — An intriguing first round match-up in the 2018 class 2A state quarterfinals between two teams that had faced in the regular season, went to the top-seed in thie year’s tournament, the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons. The Falcons beat Wilton, 3-2 in the first round to advance to the semifinals. The game was a matchup between two of the top hitting teams in class 2A. It didn’t turn out that way, instead turning into a pitching matchup.

“It’s a different experience here at state. Our defense came to play today, out bats struggled and that was it,” said Wilton head coach Kortney Denkman.

“We played through the nerves early. They had a big hit early. We were confident, we have been down before and have come back. These girls know they can play ball and compete and we’ll come back tomorrow and try to get a win,” said Denkman.

Wilton went with freshman Mila Johnson while Louisa-Muscatine threw junior Isabelle True. Johnson was pulled after four innings. She gave up three runs on five hits and walked three Falcon batters. Chloe Wells threw the final two innings in relief and did not allow a hit or run.

True cruised on the other side of the pitching matchup. True struck out 16 Wilton batters and set a new 7-inning strikeout record for class 2A. Wilton, who had not had a strikeout looking in the postseason, saw the 3-game streak end in the top of the second when True struck out Taylor Garvin looking. The Beaves kept the game close despite the strikeouts, only being retired in order in one of the seven innings and seeing True walk six Wilton batters in the game. True needed 121 pitches to get past the Beavers.

Louisa-Muscatine has been steadily improving over the past five years. From a winless team in 2011 and 10-win team in 2014, the Falcons have increased their win total each of the last three seasons from 26 in 2016 to 27 last season and 35 and counting heading to this year’s state tournament.

Wilton fell to the consolation side of the class 2A bracket with the loss. The Beavers had three hits in the game. Mallory Lange was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and stolen base to lead Wilton’s offense. Kortney Drake had the other Wilton hit. Chloe Wells had a RBI, stolen base and run scored. Lexi Maurer and Payton Ganzer each drew walks.

The Falcons had five hits in the game. Maddie Mashek led Louisa-Muscatine, going 2-for-3 from the seventh spot in the batting order. Katie Hearn, True and McKenna Hohenadel each had hits. The Beavers held two of the top hitters in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division to no hits. Kylee Sanders, the Falcons lead off hitter, was 0-for-2 after batting .490 with a .546 on-base percentage and 71 hits this year. Also held down was the Falcons number three hitter, Katie Koppe who was 6th in the SEISC North with a .412 average and 54 hits.

The game couldn’t have started better for the Beavers. Two batters up, two outs. The mood was still upbeat when Katie Koppe drew a walk from Johnson. Then, Johnson’s counterpart True, drilled a two-run home run giving the Falcons an early 2-0 lead.

Wilton rallied after having trouble solving True, in the fourth, scoring the first of their two runs in the game. True struck out eight Beavers through three innings. In the fourth, Chloe Wells was intentionally walked to lead off the inning Wells advanced to third on Falcon errors and scored on a RBI groundout by Mallory Lange to trim the Falcons lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the inning the Falcons responded. The Falcons would not advance a runner past first base until the bottom of the fourth inning. There, Louisa-Muscatine inning started when True walked and took second on a wild pitch. She would score on a hit by Hailey Sanders that was misplaced by Wilton to set the score at 3-1 after four innings.

Wilton extended their rally in the top of the fifth, sending seven batters to the plate. Alexis Maurer led off with a walk and moved to second on a walk to Payton Ganzer. True got Karlie Schult on a strike out for the first out. The runners moved up a base to load the bases on a Kortney Drake single, bringing up Wells. Having already issued a free pass to her in two previous at-bats, the Falcons had to pitch to her. Wells, patient at the plate, was issue a traditional walk on five pitches to plate a run, making the score 3-2 and draw Wilton to within one run. Isabelle True then got Emily Coss and Taylor Garvin out by strikeout to end the threat.

Wilton got something going in the top of the sixth inning. Mallory Lange led off with a double over the Falcons outfield defense. Lange would get to third on a groundout. However, the Falcons buckled down and Wilton got outs from their next three batters, stranding Lange at third base.

Wilton gained a little bump in momentum after navigating the bottom of the sixth inning. The Falcons advanced runners to first and second base with two outs, but did not plate a run. In the top of the seventh, two quick outs didn’t help. Still trailing by one run, Louisa-Muscatine intentionally walked Wells for the third time in the game to put the tying run on base. True then ended the game with her 16th strikeout.

Maddie Mashek, who returned to the line up after missing 21 games due to an injury suffered in a 6-0 home win over Winfield-Mt. Union, collected two of the Falcons hits and said her team was a little nervous in the beginning.

It was great. We had some jitters early. Isabelle’s home run kind of calmed us down and gave us the belief that ‘yeah, we belong here’,” said Mashek. Mashek added her .381 batting average to the Falcons lineup against the Beavers.

“Getting to state a big deal for our community, no one has ever gotten her. We got out of some big situations. Wilton tested us and did a good job of getting runners on base, but we got out of it,” she said.

Wilton just couldn’t get a timely hit in the game, leaving runners in scoring position in five of the seven innings of play, three of those at third base as the Beavers left seven base runners on base in the game.

"Chloe is the spark in the lineup, so when teams do that (intentionally walk her), our other girls need to step up, and today they weren't putting the bat on the ball like we have in games past," Denkman said.

Louisa-Muscatine coach Bryan Butler said that Wells is a great hitter and he didn’t want her to be the one to beat his team.

“We respect (Wells) and know her very well,” Louisa-Muscatine coach Bryan Butler said. “She’s a great hitter and with one swing of the bat, she can change the game. We know that,” he said.

Wells said that it was a frustrating game.

“It was frustrating, very, very frustrating to not hit any pitches,” said Wells. “This isn’t it, which is good. It was a privilege to play on this field. We worked really hard to get here. We are going to come back and play better. We didn’t play our best today, but we have another game tomorrow,” she said.

Eighth-grader Mallory Lange collected two of Wilton's three hits, including a leadoff double to start the sixth inning.

“It was a big hit, I was just trying to get something going. As a team, we got a lot of at-bats, but not the number of hits we are used to. It was a strange game,” said Lange.

Denkman said that her team will regroup and that they get to at least play another game before returning home.

"This is a completely different stage for the girls to play on," Denkman said. "None of them have been in this state atmosphere for anything. For them to come here and kind of absorb it, but then also know that we can compete with these best teams, I think that says a lot for Eastern Iowa, that we have two tough teams, a one-run ball game and are within 20 minutes of each other."

The Beavers advanced to the state tournament with three wins over Cascade, No. 14 Jesup and against Bellevue in the Regional Final game. The Falcons beat Danville, Wapello and No. 13 East Marshall to reach state.

Beavers Fall To #8 Logan-Magnolia In The Consolation Round

FORT DODGE — Wilton’s hope for a run to the 2018 class 2A state title ended on Monday, July 16, but not their season. Though the Beavers lost in the 2A quarterfinal game to eventual 2A champion No. 3 Louisa-Muscatine, Wilton had another game to play the next day in the consolation round. The Beavers tangled with No. 8 Logan-Magnolia on Tuesday, July 17 on the second day of the state tournament. There, the Beavers fought hard, but could not push the tying run across the plate in a 4-3 loss. Wilton ends their season with an overall record of 25-17. Logan-Magnolia entered the state tournament on a season best 7-game win streak. The Panthers had reached the state tournament in each of the past three seasons finishing second in 2015, third in 2016 and sixth last season. The Panthers were also fifth in 2006 in the school’s other state trip.

The Beavers had more hits in the game seven, and less strikeouts, three, than their 5-hit, 16 strikeout game in the first round. A big improvement according to coach Kortney Denkman.

“For these girls a game is a game, it doesn’t matter the significance, they just want to play. We wanted to better ourselves today from yesterday. We got more hits than yesterday and we took down our strikeouts too. That was our main goal and we did it. We lost another close one-run game, but we learned a lot from this trip,” said Wilton head coach Kortney Denkman.

“We left today knowing that we are a young team and with a desire to get back here next year,” she said.

The Beavers put the rest of the River Valley Conference on notice with their run to state and run once there. The Beavers won 20 games for the second straight season and most wins under coach Kortney Denkman. The Beavers flirted with gaining 20 wins in the 2015 and 2014 seasons, but ended stuck on 19 each year. Logan-Magnolia reached the state tournament last season where they lost to Durant in the quarterfinals, 9-0.

Wilton had a great start to the game, Mallory Lange singled and advanced to third base to batters later. Lange would be left stranded however in the Beaver’s first inning. Logan-Magnolia scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. Kylan Straight singled and advanced to second on a Beaver fielding error. Straight went to second on a ground out and scored on a fielder’s choice by Megan Wilson. Wilson and Abbie Carlson would be left stranded in scoring position by the end of the inning, but held a 1-0 lead.

Wilton scored twice in the top of the third inning. Karlie Schult led off with a walk and scored on Kortney Drake’s one-out double. Drake would later score on a Panther error to give Wilton a 2-1 lead, their first of the state tournament.

That lead would be short lived, as the Panthers sent six to the plate in the bottom of the inning and scored twice to grab a 3-2 lead after three innings. Both runs were unearned runs from Wilton errors with two outs in the inning.

Wilton tied the game in the top of the fourth inning. A Karlie Schult RBI single scored Peyton Souhrada who walked to lead off the top of the fourth. Later, Wilton would advance Schult to third and Lange to second, but could not plate either runner.

Logan-Magnolia pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning to set the score at 4-3 on a Kylan Straight 2-out RBI double. Both teams would leave two runners on in scoring position in the next two innings but come away empty of runs. For the game, Wilton left seven runners on base while the Panthers left 6 on base.

Wilton Starter Mila Johnson pitched four innings and took the loss. She gave up four runs on five hits. She walked two and did not record a strikeout. She used 60 pitches. Chloe Wells finished the game, pitching two innings in relief. She gave up only one hit and did not give up a run. She did not walk a batter or strike out any batter. She used 30 pitches.

The Beavers had seven hits in the game by five different players. Two Beavers had multi hit games. Mallory Lange was 2-for-4 with 2 stolen bases and Chloe Wells was 2-for-4. Wells finally got a chance to hit at the state tournament. Wells was intentionally walked three times in the Beavers loss to top-seeded Louisa-Muscatine a day earlier. Kortney Drake, Peyton Souhrada and Karlie Schult each had hits. Drake had a double and RBI and a stolen base. Schult also had a RBI.

Abbie Carlson was the winning pitcher after working seven innings. She gave up seven hits and three runs, all earned. She struck out three Wilton batters and walked three Wilton batters. Kylan Straight was 2-for-4 with a RBI and runs scored to lead Logan-Magnolia batters while Carlson had a double and drove in two runs. Megan Wilson added a RBI single. Straight led the Western Iowa Conference in hits, stolen bases with 44, on-base percentage with .640 and all of class 2A in batting average with a .600 batting clip. Wilson nearly batted .500 herself and was fourth in the Western Iowa Conference in batting with a .474 average. Carlson won her 12th game against four losses and lowered her ERA to 2.03.

The Panthers had reached state with a 2-1 Regional Final win over Mt. Ayr where eighth grader Erikah Rife had a walk-off single to send the Panthers to Fort Dodge. Carlson is the ace of the pitching staff and entered state with an 11-3 record, a 1.75 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched. The Panthers lost 4-0 to Central Springs in the quarterfinals.

Wilton will graduate two seniors, both starters, in Alexis Maurer and Kali Milder. Milder batted .316 with 36 hits and 20 RBI’s. Milder had nine extra base hits this season. She had an on-base percentage of .361 and a slugging percentage of .412. Milder had a fielding percentage of .953 with only three errors all season in 64 chances.

Maurer batted .315 with 28 hits and 9 RBI’s. She started games at catcher and as an outfielder this year. Maurer had a fielding percentage of .935 with nine errors in 135 chances. Maurer threw out three baserunners as well when she started at catcher.

The Beavers will return their top four hitters and hit leaders next year. Junior Kortney Drake will be a senior after batting .459 with 68 hits, 27 RBI’s, 16 stolen bases and .474 on-base percentage. Chloe Wells will be a sophomore after also collecting over 60 hits with 65 hits. She had a team best .504 batting average, 22 doubles, 9 home runs, 61 RBI’s and slugging percentage with .899.

The Beavers also will return all three of their pitchers from this year including two freshmen and that will be sophomores and an 8th grader who will be a freshman. Mila Johnson was 12-6 in 18 starts and 134 innings pitched her freshman season. She had an ERA of 3.60 with 79 strikeouts. Wells was 11-10 in 20 starts and 123 1/3 innings. She had an ERA of 3.01 with 71 strikeouts. Eighth grader Peyton Souhrada will also return after going 2-1 in four starts before playing the majority of the season at designated hitter. Souhrada was the Beavers opening day starter.

WILTON — The Wilton softball team begins their state tournament run this week in Fort Dodge. The Beavers will be making their first state tournament appearance since the 2009 season and fourth overall. Louisa-Muscatine is making their first trip to the state tournament this season.

Wilton played Louisa-Muscatine earlier this season with the Falcons winning 5-3. Louisa-Muscatine scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in the game while Wilton scored all three of their runs in the top of the sixth inning. Chloe Wells took the loss for Wilton and Isabelle True was the winning pitcher for the Falcons. True struck out eight Wilton batters.

Wilton had five hits in that game with Wells leading, going 2-for-2 with a run Emily Coss had a hit and RBI while Payton Ganzer and Alexis Walker each had hits. Kali Milder had a RBI in the game. For the Falcons, three players had multi hit games. Kylee Sanders, Katie Koppe and Mallory Hohenadel each had two of the eight Louisa-Muscatine hits. Koppe drove in two of the five runs.

The Falcons and Beavers have played at least once in each of the past five seasons. All but one of those years were at weekend softball tournaments. The Falcons have won the last three meetings spanning the last two years and four of the last five. Wilton won both meetings in 2015 and their only game in 2014 at the Muscatine tournament.

The Falcons have the most wins among the eight class 2A teams. They are the only team with 30 or more wins. The Falcons and Alta-Aurelia are making their first state trips in school history.

Half of the 2A field comes from two conferences. Wilton and Iowa City Regina are from the River Valley Conference. The Regals were runners-up in the South Division while Wilton was fourth. Des Moines Christian were runners-up in the West Central conference and Earlham was fourth in the same conference.

There are only two conference champions among the eight teams. Central Springs was the champion of the Top of Iowa Conference and Alta-Aurelia was the champion of the Twin Lakes conference. Logan-Magnolia placed third in the Western Iowa Conference.

The Falcons reached state by beating a pair of fellow Southeast Iowa Super Conference members - Danville and Wapello - and then beating #13 East Marshall in the Regional Final. Wilton advanced to state by beating RVC North foe Cascade at home, #14 Jesup on the road in the Regional semifinal, and RVC North foe Bellevue 10-0 in five innings, in the Regional Final game.

Two current L+M pitchers have pitched against the Beavers in their careers. Isabelle True is 2-0 in three starts having pitched in 16 2/3 innings. She has given up 11 runs in those games, eight of which were earned. She has struck out 16 batters and walked nine in that time. Hailey Sanders also has pitched and is 1-1 in two starts. Sanders has nine strikeouts against two walks in eight innings pitched.

The winner of the game between the Falcons and Beavers will play in the 2A state semifinals on Wednesday, July 18 at 3:00 p.m.

Tigers To Roll Out New Uniforms In 2018

By Ryan Stonebraker
Sports Editor

TIPTON — For the first time in seven seasons, the Tipton football program will be sporting new uniforms. The Tigers recently revealed the new uniforms to the public. The Tigers will also have a new look on their helmets.

The Tigers will sport helmets without a decal for the first time since the 2008 season. The new helmets look similar to the University of Michigan, University of Dubuque or Princeton. The helmet has not decal, and the ‘wings’ are painted on. The Tigers helmets were refurbished this offseason and as part of that, the new look was added. The main color will still be black and gold, THS colors. The winged helmets have history from teams that run the wing-T offense, the Tigers offense of choice.

“The kids are excited about the new helmets and uniforms. Kids love getting new stuff and they are excited about the white on white look for our away games. It’s kind of the trend now and players get excited about that,” said Tipton head football coach Joe Zeutenhorst.

The Tigers will wear white tops and pants for road games, black tops and pants for home games, and they will don their alternate gold tops, typically worn for big district contests.

Zuentenhort reports that the design is a little of the old, but new. The uniforms will have an Iowa Hawkeye look with stripes over the shoulders.

“The kids are excited about going white on white for the road games. It’s the in thing now. Our home uniforms are basic and have a classic look to them. The big thing is that they will have gold numbers and Tiger paws on the shoulders,” he said.

The new uniforms and helmets were to be delivered this past spring, and revealed during the program’s late spring meeting. However, a delay forced a change in the plans. Since, the players have filed in this summer, seeing the new gear and are excited.

Uniforms will go down to the freshman level. Old game uniforms are up for sale and if interested, one can call Zeutenhorst to inquire about it. The alternate white uniforms worn by the Tigers at Jesup last season, will become new practice uniforms.

The uniforms are with Riddell, the same company that Tipton has for their helmets. Zeutenhorst noted that the company was easy to deal with and did a great job working with the program to get things set up. The new uniforms also will be tighter and tighter fitting. In past years, with other company uniforms, the Tigers were often tackled by their looser jerseys. In addition, the uniform tops were thick and heavy, making players more hot and sometimes aided in cramping during games.

Zeutenhorst said that donations helped pay for the new uniforms and that for the past 3-4 months, players have written letters to community members asking for donations. Also, some of the money used came from sales of their annual football card fundraisers. The fundraiser will again be available this fall, with football players selling them in a few weeks.

“I, along with my coaching staff and players, would like to personally thank those that donated to getting new uniforms. We couldn’t have gotten these without their investment,” he said.

Zeutenhorst said that the new uniforms are an investment, not only into the program, but into the players as well.

“If you want kids to treat football like its a big deal, then you as a coach and a community have to treat it like a big deal. It was a big financial investment and it sends a message to the players that this is something that is important and we expect you to work hard because we are putting our money into it. We are doubling down and doing what it takes to be successful. We expect the kids to do the same,” he said.

Summer Football Report
Zeutenhorst reports that this summer is very different from his first summer as the head football coach.

“We are getting a lot of guys showing up for summer work. Last year, I got hired late in terms of school hires and the I had to help finish up coaching baseball at the school district I was at, and I didn’t get here until July. That is a little late in getting things going for football. We did our best though, but we struggled to get guys in,” he said.

“Basically, this summer, we are getting almost everyone in and it is a total change from last year. I feel we are way ahead of where we were last year at this time,” he said.

The Tigers have had 7-on-7 work with other schools like Wilton. The wing-T presents some challenges in a 7-on-7 format, but the Tigers are working hard, and taking advantage of the time on both sides of the football.

The Tigers will attend a full padded football camp on July 23-25 in Davenport. The following week, the Tigers will open up preseason camp on July 31.

Zeutenhorst is excited about the upcoming season. The Tigers were a work in progress after installing a new offense, the wing-T. The Tigers will be even better this fall with a year of running it under their belt. Zeutenhorst said that he has spent a lot of time preparing for this season, as has his coaches and they are excited for the upcoming season to start.

Coaching Changes Heading Into 2018
Fans of Tipton football will notice some changes in the coaching staff this fall. Longtime defensive coordinator Kyle Reeve will not be back. Reeve resigned his position this spring, and recently was named the principal at Columbus Junction high school and will leave the school district. Coach Derek Latimer also will be shifting duties, moving to the middle school program in a move to fit his work schedule better.

The new defensive coordinator will be Cole Goodenow. Goodenow, another longtime THS coach, has been the head junior varsity coach recently, and will now coordinate the defense. Also, another longtime THS coach, Rich Fisher, will move to the defensive side of the football at the varsity level. The program also hired Darren Lenz as a varsity coach. Jeremy Langenfeld will be the new head junior varsity coach, taking over for Goodenow.

See you in Solon! Beavers Take District Title

By Ryan Stonebraker
Sports Editor

WILTON — For the second straight year and third time in the last five years, the Wilton baseball team sits one-game away from reaching the state tournament. Wilton claimed their fifth district title in the last ten years Saturday night, beating West Branch 3-0 at home. The Beavers will play fourth ranked Dyersville-Beckman Tuesday in Solon. The Beavers collected their sixth shutout in their last nine games and their 11th shutout this season in the victory.

“Defense and pitching is what we are built on. Obviously we have a great pitching staff. The guys are playing good behind our pitching. Coling threw a great game and we got some timely hits in the fifth inning to get some runs,” said Wilton coach Jake Souhrada.

District champs. Getting this next game is one of their goals. They put it down on their goal sheets at the beginning of the year. Hopefully, we’ll go and play relaxed. We were today, we had some fun this morning getting the tarp off the field and hanging out. They played loose and when the game was close, they had fun and played baseball,” he said.

Rain storms late Friday night across the area left a lot of water around the Wilton area, but Wilton has a tarp that they use, placed over the infield. That tarp did the trick, along with some minor work to the field, the playing conditions were as if rain didn’t happen less than 24 hours before the game.

The Beavers will play #4 Dyersville-Beckman on Tuesday night in Solon in a 2A substate game. The Blazers advanced, winning the district 7 title, 4-1 over RVC North foe Camanche. The two teams played for state trips in 2009 and 2014. The Blazers won two close games, 3-2 in 2009 in a game played in Cascade, and 5-2 in 2014 in a game played at Linn-Mar.

Wilton beat West Branch in both games of a doubleheader to begin the 2018 season, back in late May. The Beavers won by scores of 8-3 and 11-7. Saturday’s game was much closer. Wilton went with junior Colin McCrabb while West Branch went with sophomore Matt Paulsen.

Paulsen took the loss and had only one bad inning, the fifth. He pitched six strong innings and kept Wilton batters off balance for the first four innings of the game. He struck out five, walked three and gave up three runs on five hits. Paulsen saw his ERA swell to 1.20 for the season and his record drop to 4-3 in 46 2/3 innings.

Wilton stranded five runners on base through the first four innings. The Beavers advanced a runner to second base in the third and fourth innings and had a runner reach third base in the second innings.

Wilton broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, scoring what would turn out to be the games only runs. The Beavers sent seven batters to the plate in the inning and scored three runs.

Cory Anderson led off the inning with a hard hit single down the left field line that he stretched into a double when the Bears left fielder didn’t get the ball back into the field fast enough. The hustle paid off later in the inning. Next, Collin McCrabb was hit by a pitch to give Wilton two baserunners to start the inning, and no outs. Jared Townsend then stepped in and sliced a double to left field, clearing the bases, scoring both Anderson and McCrabb for a 2-0 Wilton lead.

Paulsen induced a flyout by Tyler Hartman for the first out. Brock Hartley singled, sending Townsend to third. Hartley was courtesy ran for by Brian Stillman, to give Wilton two runners on with one out. While Chantz Steves was up, West Branch catcher Tanner Lukavsky, while trying to make a play to catch Stevens stealing second, committed a throwing error, allowing Townsend to come home with the game’s third run. That would be all the runs needed for Wilton to take the game, 3-0.

“When Cory gets on a lot of good things happen. He is a spark plug for us, and has a lot of energy. When he gets on base for us, we tend to score a lot of runs,” said Souhrada.

“We have hitters behind him to hit him in too and that’s what we did in the fifth,” he said.

The Beavers defense had a couple of hiccups in the game with bobbles on a couple batted balls, but two plays in particular were more the mode of operation for the Beavers in the game. In the top of the sixth, West Branch lead off batter Brady Lukavsky lifted a shallow blooper to right field. Beaver right fielder A.J. Bosten raced in, left his feet, dove, and came up with the ball before it hit the ground. The play was the first out in the inning, and the ensuing round of crowd applause carried over from the 3-run fifth for Wilton. Then, in the seventh, West Branch’s Trey Eagled reached on an one-out error. Pete Espensen then hit a grounder to Wilton shortstop Cory Anderson. Anderson flipped the ball to second baseman Tyler Hartman. Hartman stepped on second base for out two in the inning, and fired the ball to first baseman Jared Townsend for the third out to end the game.

Colin McCrabb won his 6th game of the season in pitching the complete game shutout. He improved to 6-1 and lowered his team best ERA to 0.65. He has 61 strikeouts to only six walks. McCrabb tossed seven innings of one-hit baseball in winning his fourth straight start, and third consecutive 1-hit shutout. He struck out four Bears and did not walk a batter. McCrabb retired the final ten batters in the game, often times getting ahead in the count.

“Everything was working really good tonight. They didn’t have a lot of hard contact tonight, but they did put the ball in play quite a bit,” said McCrabb.

“The defense did a good job of getting outs tonight. When you know you have a good defense it allows me to attack and stay around the strike zone. I don’t have to hope they chase something outside the zone and get a ball called,” he said.

Wilton had five hits in the game. Jared Townsend was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI’s. Townsend’s hit was one of three in the Beavers 3-run fifth.

“We just want to get over the hump and get to state this year. Several Wilton teams have been at this point and not gotten there. We really want it,” said Townsend after the game. Townsend will take the ball against the Blazers Tuesday. He is 7-2 in nine starts with an ERA of 0.96 in 58 1/3 innings. He had 11 strikeouts to just 18 walks.

Cory Anderson had a double while Brock Hartley and Chantz Stevens each had singles.

It was a crazy night in class 2A across the state in district final games. Top ranked Cascade was upset 5-2 by Oelwein and second ranked West Lyon was upset by West Sioux 9-4. They join No. 6 Monticello and No. 8 New Hampton as top-10 2A teams that were upset before reaching the substate round. Iowa City Regina joined Wilton in the substate round after the third ranked Regals beat Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 4-1 Saturday. The Regals will play Central Lee in the substate round, looking to make it two schools from the RVC to reach the 2018 state tournament.

WILTON — Wilton junior Jared Townsend pitched a one-hitter and Wilton won their 23rd game of the season, beating Durant 5-0 in a 2A district semifinal game at home on Tuesday, July 10.

Wilton improved to 23-5 overall. The Beavers advanced to the district final game for the sixth time in seven seasons. The Beavers avoided being upset in their first district game. The Beavers last lost their first postseason game in the 2011 season when they lost to West Liberty 7-6 in walk-off fashion. The Beavers will face West Branch in the district final.   Wilton scored the game’s first runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cory Anderson scored when while on third base, Durant catcher Curtis Lilienthal tried to pick him off at third. A throw by Lilienthal, was high and ended up in left field. Anderson scored, giving Wilton a 1-0 lead. Later, in the inning, a Brock Hartley infield pop up was dropped by Durant shortstop Mason Compton. The play was ruled a hit, that scored Jared Townsend, who had reached base via a walk earlier in the inning. The run gave Wilton a 2-0 lead after one inning.

Wilton extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Colin McCrabb walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single by Tyler Hartman. The Beavers put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two runners on base, Chantz Stevens smacked a 2-run double to set the score at 5-0.

Townsend pitched a complete game and struck out 16 batters. Townsend needed only 94 pitches in the game and did not walk a Durant batter. He allowed only three baserunners, two from dropped third strikes and another from a fielder’s choice.

Brendan Paper took the loss after starting and working 5 1/3 innings. He struck out seven beavers and had four walks. He gave up five runs on four hits. Nate Dierickx pitched the final two outs in the sixth inning. He struck out one and did not give up a run or hit.

DURANT — The Bellevue Comets stunned the class 2A softball world last week in Durant, upsetting the top-ranked Wildcats 2-1 in a Regional Semifinal game in Durant. The Comets advanced to play Wilton in the Region 8 Final after the Beavers upset the #14 ranked Jesup J-Hawks in Jesup.

The Comets pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Comets had only one baserunner reach base the first time through their batting order. The first Comet run scoring Rebecca Schroeder. Eliza Scheckel doubled and an errant throw allowed Schroeder to score the first run of the game. Later, Grace Tath plated a runner on a RBI groundout to push the lead to 2-0.

Durant scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth. Hannah Happ led off with a single and promptly stole second base. An error by the Comets would allow Happ to later score putting the score at 2-1.

Durant had chances. Ruby Kappeler doubled in the first inning, but was left stranded. Later, in the seventh, Durant brought the winning run to the plate, but a game ending double play ended the scoring threat and the game setting off a massive Bellevue celebration.

Kamryn Meyer took the loss despite pitching very well. Of the 21 outs in the game, Meyer struck out 16 Comet batters. She gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits and did not walk a batter. For the season, Meyer had 235 strikeouts against 29 walks and an outstanding ERA of 0.82. Opposing batters batted only .133 against her this season.

Durant’s bats produced four hits in the game from four different players. Hannah Happ, Ruby Kappeler, Jalyn Bullard and Jada Rock had hits. Kappeler was a double and Happ had the only Wildcat stolen base.

Durant ends the season 32-3 and was ranked No. 1 all year by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Bellevue won their 16th game of the season with the win. The Comets lost to Durant by one-run, 3-2 back on June 5.

Grace Tath was the winning pitcher after pitching a complete game and striking out two Wildcats. Tath scattered four hits and gave up an unearned run. Rebecca Schroeder, Eliza Scheckel and Tath had hits for the Comets. Tath had the only RBI in the game.
