Beavers Win Two Of Three At Fairfield Tournament

FAIRFIELD — The annual trip to the Fairfield tournament for the Wilton softball team produced two wins in three games.  There, the Beavers beat Cardinal (Eldon) 12-1 and Chariton 12-4 and fell 6-4 in a close game with West Burlington.  The Beavers improved to 12-8 on the season and will head into the week against #4 Durant for a home doubleheader and a road game Thursday at Bellevue and road game Friday at Columbus Junction.  The Beavers end their week 3-3 and winners of three of their last four games.  The Beavers did not play a home game this week in six contests.
Wilton started the two-day tournament with a 12-1, 5-inning win over Cardinal.  The Beavers put the game away with a 6-run top of the first.  The Beavers followed that up with three runs in each of the second and third innings to take a 12-1 lead.  Falloyn Grunder was the winning pitcher after two innings of work.  Rori Allen made her varsity debut and pitched three innings in relief.  She gave up two hits, struck out three, walked one and did not allow a run.
The Beavers started Saturday with a 6-4 loss in eight innings to West Burlington.  WB send the winning runs across the plate with a 2-run eighth inning.  Wilton trailed 1-0 after two innings and tied the score at 1-1 after four.  Wilton led 4-1 before West Burlington tied, and forced extra innings in the bottom of the seventh with three runs.  Falloyn Grunder took the loss after working 7 1/3 innings and giving up six hits and striking out two.
Wilton ended the tournament with a 10-4 win over Chariton.  The Beavers led 3-0 after one and added five runs in the top of the second to take an 8-0 lead.  Wilton led 10-1 at one point in the game.  Chloe Wells was the winning pitcher after six innings of work where she gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out one batter.
Wilton had 31 hits in the three games.  Kortney Drake led Wilton batters in the three games, going 6-for-10 with 4 RBI’s, 3 stolen bases and a triple.  Allison Bosten was 4-for-8 with two doubles, 5 RBI’s.  Karlie Schult was 4-for-7 with a inside-the-park home run and a RBI.  Emily Lange added four hits and Alexis Maurer added three hits and a RBI.
The Beavers improved to 3-7 in ten weekend tournaments so far this season.  The Beavers will play at the Muscatine Tournament on June 23 and 24.

Beavers Out Slug Camanche, 15-9
CAMANCHE — The Beavers found themselves in a slugfest last Thursday in Camanche.  The Beavers out slugged and out lasted the Camanche Indians in a 15-9 win on the road.  The 15 runs were the second highest run total that Wilton has put up this summer.  The first, was a 17-run outburst against Fort Madison on June 2 in game one of a non-conference doubleheader.
It was home run derby early as both teams had home runs for their first runs of the game.  Chloe Wells blasted a solo home run in the top of the first and Tarah Wehde did the same in the bottom of the first.  The Indians tacked on two more first inning runs to take a 3-1 lead.
Camanche added three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-1 lead.  Then the Beavers bats came alive with Wilton putting up 11 runs on nine hits and sending 16 batters to the plate in the inning to take a 12-6 lead.  Karlie Schult, Chloe Wells each had two hits in the inning.  Amanda Fowler and Alexis Maurer each hit home runs in the inning with Fowler drilling a 3-run bomb and Maurer smashing a grand slam.  All but one batter in the Beavers order reached base in the inning.
Wilton led 13-7 before scoring twice in the top of the seventh to take a 15-7 lead.
Wells got the win after working six innings in relief of Falloyn Grunder who started the game.  Wells scattered six hits and allowed four runs.

Beavers Lose Road RVC Doubleheader Clash With Ranked Regals
IOWA CITY — The Beavers started their six-game week with a road trip to class 2A #7 Iowa City Regina.  There, the Beavers fell in both games of a doubleheader 7-6 in game one and 3-1 in game two.
In game one, Wilton led 5-2 after six and 6-2 after the top of the seventh, but a 5-run bottom of the seventh allowed Regina to escape with a 7-6 victory.
A Chloe Wells smashed a solo home run with two outs in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.  Wilton sent seven batters to the plate in the sixth and scored three times.  Allison Bosten drilled a two-run home run and Falloyn Grunder scored on an error to give Wilton a 5-2 lead.  Another Wells solo home run in the top of the seventh gave Wilton a 6-2 lead.
The Regals batted around in the bottom of the inning.  A Carrigan O’Conner two-run single tied the game at 6 and two batters later, a two-out, single by Paisley Gardner scored O’Conner for the game winning hit.
Wilton had six hits led by Wells with two solo home runs and 2 RBI’s and Bosten with a home run and 2 RBI’s.  Grunder took the loss after 6 2/3 innings of work.  She struck out two.
In game two, Grunder and Wells shared the pitching duty with Wells starting and taking the loss after five innings.  Grunder pitched a scoreless inning in relief.  Wells gave up three runs on three hits.  Regina scored all three runs in the bottom of the fifth after Wilton had scored the game’s first run in the top of the inning for a 1-0 lead.

Paisley Gardner and Sarah Lehman combined for a 1-hit game in the circle.  Taylor O’Conner and Emily Bonnett were each 2-for-3 to lead Regina.  Kortney Drake had the only Beaver hit and run scored.  Amanda Fowler and Allison Bosten each reached base via a walk.  Drake singled to lead off the fifth, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on an error.  She scored on a passed ball later in the inning.
