Fall 2018 Preview: Knights Favored In RVC North

CLARENCE — The North Cedar Knights claimed their fifth River Valley Conference North title last season and advanced to a Class 2A Regional semifinal before bowing out of the 2017 season. North Cedar finished the season 22-16. The Knights will be favored to win their sixth North crown this fall.

North Cedar graduated three seniors, the last pieces of a run the past four years that saw the Knights win 38 RVC matches against 7 losses. In that same four-year span, North Cedar had 115 wins against 45 losses. Gone from last season are Darby Hawtrey, Darian Gray, and Taylor Tenley. Hawtrey and Gray are playing volleyball in college this fall at Coe College in Cedar Rapids and DMACC respectively.

Hawtrey was a 3rd team class 2A All-State selection and All-District pick. She had 415 kills to lead the team and served 304-for-318 with 43 aces. She had 81 blocks, 298 digs, and 71 assists. Gray was second on the team in kills with 171 and served 374-for-382 with 28 aces. Gray had a team-high 89 blocks, 301 digs, and 31 assists. Tenley had a team-high 376 digs to go with 47 assists and served 227-for-243 with 23 aces.

Sydney Dennis returns after earning all-conference honors as a freshman. Dennis was an RVC North Division selection. Dennis led North Cedar in assists with 598 and was second on the team in digs with 310. She also had 30 blocks and 43 kills. She also led North Cedar in serving, going 440-for-454 with 38 ace serves.

Also returning are Nicole Sander (110 kills, 154-for-162 serving, 170 digs, 43 blocks), Erica Jones (78 kills, 17 digs, 45 blocks), Katie Thompson (77 kills, 262-for-282 serving with 27 aces, 161 digs, 81 blocks), Kelly Proesch (34 kills, 17 digs, 13 blocks). Also back are Andrea Wachendorf, Emma Boelyn, Kayla Sander and Carly Meier.

North Cedar will play in five-weekend tournaments starting with one in DeWitt on August 25. The Knights will also play at Mt. Vernon, Springville, Center Point-Urbana and host their own tournament on September 22. North Cedar will host RVC foes Northeast, Camanche, Mid-Prairie and Cascade.
