TIPTON — After two seasons of playing in class 1A, the Tipton Tigers movClassclass 2A this season. With that, comes new opponents on the schedule. The Tigers will face Camanche, Mt. Vernon, West Burlington, Louisa-Muscatine and West Liberty in district play as well as Cedar County foes Durant, West Branch and North Cedar in non-district as well as Vinton-Shellsburg in week 2. The Tigers also enter year two of the wing-T offense they installed last season. Last year, the Tigers struggled at times, but at others, looked dominant. This year, second year head coach Joe Zeutenhorst hopes for more consistent play out of his team. The Tigers went 4-5 in Zeutenhorst’s first season with wins over Louisa-Muscatine, Jesup, Durant and North Cedar. The Tigers lost to 2017 playoff teams West Branch and Wilton by ten points each and lost a third game by seven points. Turning those close games into wins would go a long way into where the Tigers want to finish this season.

On offense, the Tigers stymied many of their foes last season with their new brand of football. The Tigers put up nearly 2,500 yards of total offense, with nearly 1,800 yards rushing. Six rushers rushed for over 100 yards for the season and three of those rushed for over 200 yards.

The Tigers graduated their quarterback and top rusher, but return most of their receivers and many of those six running backs with over 100 yards on the ground last year.

The Tigers are not settled at quarterback yet. The position unsettled reports Zeutenhorst with each day a battle between a group of guys. Ben Emrich graduated after guiding the offense while passing for 720 yards and 6 touchdowns and rushing for 90 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Quinten Mesick graduated as the top THS rusher last year and is playing football at St. Ambrose this year. Mesick rushed for 618 yards with 6 touchdowns and a 6.0-yard per carry average. He also caught two passes for 45 yards and 2 more touchdowns. Also graduated is fullback Keith Penningroth (302 yards, 1 TD, 4.4-yard average). Logan Stolte returns as the top rusher after gaining 229 yards, a touchdown and a 5.1-yard average. Jared Hightower, John Crowley and Connor Hermiston return after each rushing for over 100 yards last year.

The receiving unit will be the most experienced returning with leading receiver Frank Bierman and second-leading receiver John Crowley back. Bierman caught 13 passes cor 266 yards and two scores and Crowley caught eight passes for 208 yards. Nile Schuett, Austin Lenz, Hightower, Hermiston, Chance Koch all are back after having at least one-catch last season.

The Tigers will have to find replacements for their top-two tacklers from last season (Emrich - 88 and Penningroth - 64). Tipton top two tacklers are linemen. Skyler Harroun returns as the top THS tackler from last season. Harroun had 62 stops with five tackles for loss and two sacks. Dylan Mente returns after 49 tackles, 8 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. Both also will help anchor the Tigers offensive line alone with Jesse Lieser, Jack Boldt and Kyle Priebe. Bierman also will return as the Tigers tight end. Bierman had 45 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 3 sacks. Connor Hermiston (38 tackles), Logan Stolte (34 tackles, 2 interceptions) and Austin Lenz (29 tackles) also return.

The Tigers intercepted 9 passes last year among five players. They return with who combined for five of those with Logan Stotle and Connor Hermiston each having two last season and Jard Hightower having one interception.

The Tigers have some spots to fill on special teams. Keith Penningroth graduated after handling place kicking duty and making an 8-of-11 point after touchdown attempts. Blaise Thumma also graduated after being the Tigers main punter after 20 punts. Quinten Mesick and Ben Emrich each led Tipton in return yards for both kickoffs and punts. Hightower, Stoltle, Jaxon Murphy and Lenz will get the first crack at return team duty.

The Tigers will host their first two opponents this year with their 2018 season opener at home against North Cedar on August 24 and against Vinton-Shellsburg in week 2, on August 31. Tipton will host Camanche and Louisa-Muscatine. Two road games, Durant and West Branch, are in the county while two other road games, Mt. Vernon and West Liberty, are close to Cedar County.
