COLUMN: From the Cheap Seats: Tipton Sends To Off To New Opportunities

By Ryan Stonebraker

It doesn’t get any easier the longer I am here at the newspaper.  Growing up and getting older is never easy anyway and I am always adjusting to something it seems.  One of the things that we all go through is losses along the way.  Whether we move to a new town, have a loved one pass away or see friends move away.  Last week, the Tipton school district learned that two pillars since I have been here at the paper will be moving on.  Tipton middle school principal Sue O’Donnell and head football coach and teacher Josh Bahr will leave the district after the school year for great opportunities.
Both have meant a lot to the district over the years.  O’Donnell as an administrator and what some may not know, a successful swimming coach of the Tigers swim team some years back where she routinely helped lead our kids to state swimming meets in Marshalltown.  Bahr, as the leader of the Tigers football team.  A builder of young men and programs as well as a respected teacher at the high school.
Since I have been here at the end of the summer 2005 season, here are the number of football coaches at each school I cover.  All four schools have had a playoff run since I have been here.  North Cedar - 6, Durant - 4, Wilton - 2 and Tipton 2, but soon 3.
Bahr will become the K-12 principal and athletic director at West Central (Maynard) High School in Northeast Iowa and O’Donnell will be a principal at one of the schools in Muscatine.  Both outstanding opportunities for two driven individuals that love kids and love to build and develop.
Spring is not my favorite season.  As nature blooms and warmer weather hits, I brace for changes in the area coaching line up each year.   Ok, I get pretty excited for the start of the Major League Baseball season, I’ll  give you that.  I apologize to those who enjoy spring with both feet jumping into the new season, but I don’t join you.  And, I’m not a fan of mowing my yard.
I work crazy hours, but hours I can control for the most part.  I work for an awesome boss that expects excellence, yet gives me the freedom to make that look how I want it to, not from an office in the far away safety of corporate headquarters.  Our family is well known here, but a lot of my friends and some of my closest friends are coaches at the four schools I cover.  When they leave, I lose a ‘friend’ just like many of you do or if your kid loses a teacher.  Often, in season coaches see me and I them regularly, but with a new season, I have new friends to catch up and I’ll catch up with the previous season coaches the next year and so on.
Over the years I have picked up my share of cliches.  My wife will attest to it as I see the famous eye rolls when I repeat one.  There is a bit of truth to them though, and not a blanket statement that you here in the athletic world.  Here it is.  Don’t be sad that it is ending, be happy that it happened.  I am a collector.  As a kid, the go to was sports cards, specifically baseball cards.  As an adult with two kids, it is experiences.  As a adult it is collecting things like coaching youth sports, sharing a favorite show and collecting smiles instead of material possessions.  My go to after family is friendships.
I don’t have a corner on the cliche market and this very well may be one, but I will claim it as mine.  I have a saying in recent years that I repeat to my close friends.  Here it is.    Enjoy it while you have it, because you never know how long it will last.  Whatever ever ‘it’ means to you, enjoy it.  A friendship, a physical item, a relationship, a job, whatever.  Nothing lasts forever, and that is fine.  People come, people go, things come into your life, things go.  There are many seasons that make up one's life.  I think that we all have enjoyed O’Donnell’s and Bahr’s time in Tipton and deep down we are happy for them and what opportunities they have.
So, on behalf of the Tipton community as a whole, the Tipton athletic community, and as a friend, I wish both Bahr and O’Donnell the best and good luck with your new paths.

Part of my spring involves white knuckle rides into the pre-summer weeks is keeping tabs on school board agendas and meeting minutes seeing if my friends are leaving.  I think that I will retire that and look at minutes and be excited for their opportunities instead.  Good luck, go get ‘em guys.

Bahr Takes Job In NE Iowa

TIPTON — For the past eight football seasons at Tipton, Josh Bahr has led the Tigers onto the field.  This fall, there will be a new man leading the black and gold onto the field.  Last week, Bahr tendered his resignation, pending school board approval, to accept a job in Northeast Iowa at West Central (Maynard) High School.  Bahr has been at Tipton since 2003, minus a short stint at North Scott.
“Last winter I began a leadership program at Drake and was surrounded by outstanding and impactful educational leaders.  I was inspired and changed.  So, I began pursuing opportunities to move into administration,” he said.
“I found one.  This job checks a lot of boxes for my family,” said Bahr.
Bahr has meant so much to the Tipton community over the years.  Bahr said that leaving Tipton was not the plan when he came back in the late 2000’s.
“The plan was to be here for the long run.  This was a brutally tough decision for me and my family.  Tipton is a special place with special people and we love it here, but it’s time to chase this opportunity.  It’s a good fit for us,” said Bahr.
Bahr ends his coaching tenure with a record of 29 wins and 46 losses.  He took over in the 2009 season when another longtime Tiger coach, Mike Wehde, stepped down.  The two are the only two head football coaches in the past 13 years at Tipton.
Bahr’s early teams were marked with steady improvement and didn’t use the excuse of some of the smallest classes in recent memory going through, during a 4-23 stretch from 2009-11.  What is easy to see now looking back, was that Bahr and his staff were building a program.  From the 2012 season until this past season, Tipton had 25 wins and three playoff appearences in five seasons.  The Tigers beat North Cedar four of the five seasons, scoring over 40 points in each win, including a 77-18 drubbing in 2013 and a 54-13 win last fall.
Bahr said that he is really proud of keeping his staff together for the most part during his eight year run.  Coaches Kyle Reeve, Cole Goodenow and Rich Fisher have been with him all eight years and share in the program’s development and growth over the years.
“The coaches and players have made this transition the toughest.  They have meant a lot to me.  I look back at 2009 and all of us were in new positions.  I was a first time head coach and the others were first time coaches in their roles.  We forged a bond that got stronger with each passing year,” he said.  Bahr also said that former coaches Henry Harden, Jeff Ormsby, Ben Slife and others also were a big part of the program
“I don’t want to leave anyone out, but it’s been a lot of fun coaching with these guys and coaching at teaching at Tipton,” said Bahr.
Bahr will be the K-12 principal and athletic director at West Central Maynard.  Bahr will still be involved in athletics, taking on AD duties with his new job.
“That piece of me I don’t have to put fully away and that is exciting,” he said.

Bahr said he is also excited to be a part of a district where he gets to be involved at all levels K-12.  He will be going to a school district that is class 1A and A in athletics and with that, a school district that has challenges that he is excited to face.  Bahr is returning to his home area, having graduated from Sumner-Fredericksburg High School, which is 20 minutes down the road from Maynard.

COLUMN: From the Cheap Seats - Upper Iowa Throwers

Two Former Area Throwers At Upper Iowa

It wasn’t that long that Tipton’s Caitlin Himes and Durant’s Brinn Grunder competed for conference and state titles in the shot put and discus rings.  Last year in fact.  Both 2016 graduates are members of the Upper Iowa University women’s track and field team as freshmen.  Both, have been throwing for the Peacocks.
Grunder has set and broken her own shot put record in the outdoor season.  Grunder set the school record in the first Upper Iowa outdoor meet and broke her own record this past week at the Tulsa Dulas in Oklahoma.  Grunder set a new record of 42-feet, 9.5-inches.  Grunder had set the school record in the Peacocks first outdoor meet of the season which was good for fourth at the Upper Iowa Dingles/Brueggen Open in Fayette.
Grunder is the daughter of Tracy and Brian Grunder and is a Gerontology and Psychology major.
HImes, threw 141.11 in the discus at the Peacocks latest meet, at the NSIC/MIAA conference showdown in Maryville, Missouri.  The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association is a three-day track extravaganza.  Himes is the daughter of Thomas Himes and Rachel Lewis and is an athletic training major.
