Mount Vernon volleyball and track & field coach Maggie Willems has been named the CHARACTER COUNTS! 2016 Coach of the Year. In recognition of this honor, a $1,000 cash award will be made in the name of Coach Willems to the Mount Vernon athletic department to further enhance character development initiatives. Willems will be honored with her award at the 2016 Girls State Basketball Tournament Friday, March 4 at halftime of the 2016 Class 2A State Championship game.
The CHARACTER COUNTS! Coach of the Year Award honors a worthy recipient who embodies the Six Pillars of Character®: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring & Citizenship. Rather than spotlight winning records and isolated acts of heroism or generosity, the award was conceived to recognize individuals whose coaching lives and achievements demonstrate an enduring commitment to any or all of the following qualities associated with good character.
A 1996 graduate of Mount Vernon, Willems participated in track & field and volleyball at Midland University. She returned to her alma mater in 2005 and served as an assistant coach in track and volleyball and became the head coach in both sports in 2011. Her volleyball teams have reached the state tournament four times, reaching the semifinals three times with one runner-up finish. Her 2015 track & field team placed second in Class 2A. Willems is a two-time district coach of the year in volleyball twice and the Iowa Track & Field Coaches Association At-Large Coach of the Year honoree twice.
Willems and her husband, Nate are the parents to daughters Ava (7), Emery (5) and Marlie (3).
