Gustafson Tabbed USBWA All-American



IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa junior Megan Gustafson has been named a second team All-American by the United States Basketball Writer’s Association (USBWA).

Gustafson is one of 11 student-athletes chosen to a first or second team. The 31st annual All-America team features six players on the second team due to a tie in voting.

Gustafson is the fourth Hawkeye in program history to earn USBWA All-America honors and the first since Sam Logic earned the distinction in 2015. Michelle Edwards (1988) and Necole Tunsil (1994) were also USBWA All-Americans.

The Port Wing, Wisconsin, native averaged 25.7 points, 12.8 rebounds, and shot 67.1 percent from the field in 32 contests this season. The Big Ten Player of the Year leads the nation in points per game (25.7), field goal percentage (67.1), and field goals made (320). She also ranks second in double-doubles (28), third in total points (823), fourth in defensive rebounds per game (9), and fifth in total rebounds (411) and rebounds per game (12.8).

Gustafson has also earned All-America honors from Sports Illustrated (first team), the Associated Press (second team), College Sports Madness (second team), USA Today (second team), and ESPNW (third team).

The USBWA All-America selections, chosen by a vote of the entire USBWA membership, will contend for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award as the USBWA’s National Player of the Year. The winner will be announced Friday at 2 p.m. (CT) in Columbus, Ohio.

2018 Spring Preview: Boy's and Girl's Golf Preview



Tigers Look To Build On Dream Season

  TIPTON — The Tipton girl’s golf team achieved new heights as a program last year. The 2017 Tigers were second in the River Valley Conference, winners of their sectional and district meet in Jesup and advanced to the state golf meet where they placed 4th. Led by the quartet of Rylee Conrad, Mara Jauron, Addy Duwe, Brittany Huinker, and Kailee Meyer the Tigers set the bar high for future Tipton teams.

  Conrad, Jauron, and Meyer graduated, but back is Huinker and Duwe to lead the way. Tipton’s roster includes Britney Ford, Addy Duwe, Tori Peach, Madeline Waltz, Haylee Ham, Allie Anderson, Alex Hoffman, Katie Binns, Ali Nash, and Brittany Huinker. Peach, Ham, and Waltz also are returners this year. Huinker was a 1st Team All-River Valley Conference selection last year and Duwe earned honorable mention honors.

  The Tigers have home meets on April 9, 10 and 30. The Tipton Tigerette home invitational is scheduled for May 4.

Knights Have Mix of Old and New Players
  LOWDEN — The North Cedar girls golf team welcomed head coach Lori Dittmer to the program last year. The Knights placed 13th in the River Valley Conference last year. The Knights had a tough road to start the season after then strengthen-seniority missed the year after getting hurt in basketball in the 2016-17 winter season.
  This season, the Knights roster sits at eight and three players return from last year. Back are the first team All-RVC pick Maddie Cornelius. Cornelius shot a score of 48 at the RVC meet last year. Also returning are Lydia Esbaum and Taylor Tenley.
  Also on the 2018 Knight girls, golf roster are Rachel Hart, Katelyn Jackson, Alexia Finefield, Parker Stout and Carly Meier.
  The Knights will have home meets on April 17, and April 30 at the 330 club in Lowden.

Durant Returns Two Players From Sectional Championship Team
  DURANT — The Durant girl’s program is only three seasons removed from their 2015 sectional championship team. Those players are gone and new ones wait to carry on the program’s tradition of solid play. Back this year to help lead head coach Denise Ahrens team will be Chloe Meana, Emily Huston, Belle Rockow, Ellie Olsen, Sierra Gregoire Tessa Brandenburg, and Makenna Buesing.

  The 2017 Durant girl’s golf team placed 8th at the River Valley Conference meet, up from 10th the year before in 2016. Susan Graves was a honorable mention All-RVC selection at the conference meet. Graves has graduated last year, leaving an opportunity for the top spot to be grabbed.
 
  The Wildcats have home meets on April 2, April 16, April 26 and May 7 at Wahkonsa Golf and Country Club.

Two Return For 2017 RVC Champs
  WILTON — The Wilton Beaver girl’s golf team won the 2017 River Valley Conference and advanced to the Jesup district meet after having a successful sectional meet. The beavers season ended in Jesup after finishing behind Tipton, Sumner-Fredericksburg and Jesup at the meet. Two players off that team and one that earned all-conference honors return for coach Jamie Meyer. Seniors last year, Alyssa Anderson and Tess Kerkhof earned RVC Elite honors. Back are Eleney Owens, RVC honorable mention team, and Taylor Garvin are back. The Beavers 2017 RVC title was their best finish at a RVC meet. It capped off the progression to the top. Wilton placed 9th in 2014, 7th in 2015 and 4th in 2016.
  Members of the 2018 Wilton girls golf team are, Annabel Grings, Riley Hammann, Alexis Walker, Ryleigh Stevens, Zoe Barrett, Tessa Bartell, Eleney Owens, Elizabeth Hugunin, Taylor Garvin, Katelyn Boeding, Mila Johnson, and Tatum Oveson.

Tigers Look To Returning Quartet To Carry Team
  TIPTON — Four seniors return to the Tipton boy’s golf lineup this spring at the 2016 season starts. Back are seniors Dylan Binns, Adam Hermsen, Mark Becker and Riley Ford.

  The Tigers placed 3rd at the River Valley Conference meet last season and saw then senior Trent Schroeder advance to districts after qualifying out of the sectional meet as an individual. Both Schroeder and 2016 senior Riley Ford earned All-Conference honors this season.

  Also on the roster this season are Jacob Tischuk, Blake Sloan, Jake MacDonald, Zach Ford, Austin Mente, Keith Penningroth, Luke Becker, Jared Hightower, Jackson Barnum, Hunter McCollough and Trevor Brennan.

  Tipton has home meets this year on April 18 and May 2 at the Tipton Golf and Country Club.

Knights Return Mandy From Last Year
  LOWDEN — The North Cedar boys golf team placed 3rd at last seasons River Valley Conference meet and return many of those members from that team, to lead this year’s squad. The Knights also reached the district meet after placing third at their sectional meet where Durant and Wilton were second and first.

  Back are a trio of seniors in Pavin Esbaum, Cory Cox and Austyn Sander. Juniors back are Chase Gallagher, Chase Miller, Cameron King, Braden Wink,Gage Walshire and Jacob Spahr.

  Esbaum and Cox return from the lineup from the conference meet. Esbaum shot an 88 (45-43) and Cox shot a 95 (47-48). North Cedar had two players last year earn all-conference honors. They were Ethan Hill and Nick Dewell who graduated last year. Todd Cox returns to guide the Knights squad as head coach this year.

  North Cedar has home meets on April 9 and April 23 and the Knights play their home matches at the 330 Golf and Country Club in Lowden.

Wildcats Come Into Season With High Hopes
  DURANT — The Durant boys golf team enters the 2018 season coming off a trip to the district meet and have two recent state meet trips to their credit as well. The Wildcats placed 6th at the River Valley Conference meet.

  The Wildcats have a small squad this season with eight players out this year. Back from last year are Logan and Lucas Callison and Drake Jehle. Logan Callison earned honorable mention honors and Lucas Callison returns after also shooting a score of 84 at the RVC meet last year.

  Also on the Wildcats roster Drew DeLong, Michael Choate, Mason Bird, Michael Christopher and Brian Graves.

  Durant has home meets on April 9 and April 30. Meets are played at the Wahkonsa Golf and Country Club.

Beavers Set Sights On Return Trip To State Meet
  WILTON — The Wilton boys golf team reached the 2017 state golf meet after winning their sectional meet and advancing out of a class 2A district meet in Waterloo. The Beavers have set their sights on returning to state and have All but one player back from last year’s team. Gone from last year is Jake Fratzker, but returning are Tyler Hartman, Jared Townsend, Nolan Leaton, Brock Hartley and Brayton Wade.

  The Beavers placed second at the River Valley Conference meet, losing to West Branch by two strokes 320 to 322. Hartman was a 1st team All-RVC pick and Townsend and Leaton earned honorable mention honors at the conference meet last year.

  Also out this season for Wilton are Josh Hunter, Collin McCrabb, Nolan Moench, Coy Baker, Cory Anderson, Clayton Cooling, Douglas Wiese, Mason Marquez, Cole Rabedeaux, Brent Herrold, Adam Crumly, Chantz Stevens, Hunter Hartung, Brady Shook, Mason Nolte and Colton Berggren.

  Wilton had home meets on April 2 and April 10 at the Wahkonsa Golf and Country Club.

2018 Spring Preview: Beavers Hope To Inch Up In RVC Race


  WILTON — The Wilton Beavers have 20 out for track this season. Of those, 13 return from last year. Returners are Peyton Hagens, Nathaniel Fagner, Charles and Scott Martin, Brian Stillman, Jacob Reifert, Isaac Hunter, Dalton Snider, Kaelyb Gerlt, Buddy Darting, Colby Brown, Drake Hayes, and Chase Miller.

  The Beavers placed 11th at the River Valley Conference meet last year and had four events get to state. Evan Reifert qualified in the 200-meter, 400-meter sprint events, and the long jump while Buddy Darting qualified in the 3,200-meter run. Reifert won the 400-meter dash and the long jump at the RVC meet last season.

  Wilton will host a co-ed meet on Monday, April 9. The Beavers run at Tipton, Wapello, West Branch, Mid-Prairie, West Liberty, North Cedar, Clear Creek-Amana and Columbus Junction in the regular season. The River Valley Conference meet is Thursday, May 3 at West Liberty.

2018 Spring Preview: Durant Looks To Continually Improve This Season


  DURANT — The Durant boy’s track and field team will look to continue to improve under coach Phil Roehlk. Roehlk begins his second season as the head Durant boy’s track coach after taking over the program last year.

  Out for track for Durant this spring are Easton Botkins, Mason Compton, Jake Nietfeldt, Cameron Hoon, Clayton Miller, Cameron Ruggiero, Aydin Flockhart, Koby Paulsen, Cole Miedema, Roger Werthmann, Tristan Hughes, Marcus Engstler, Jack Voss, Cole Stineman, Drew Henderson, Jeremy Carnes, Caleb Burmeister, Ty Chenault, Anthony Mundt, Carter Voelkers, Zac Badtram, Jake Willkomm, Cale Frett, Dawson Frett and Jonah Werth.

  Top Durant finishes at the RVC meet last year were Nathan Prunchak 9th in the 1,600-meter run; Dawson Frett 11th in the shot put and 17th in the discus; Anthony Mundt 16th in the 800-meter run and 17th in the 400-meter dash; and a 10th place finish in the distance medley relay.

  The Wildcats were to host a co-ed meet on Tuesday, April 3 but it was canceled due to weather. Durant will compete in or very close to Cedar County with meets at Tipton, Wilton, West Branch, and West Liberty. The Wildcats will compete in eight outdoor meets before the River Valley Conference meet in West Liberty on May 3.

2018 Spring Preview: Knights Look To Build On 2016 and Move Forward in 2017

  CLARENCE — 2017 saw the Knights send an event to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, and send five events to the 2017 state track and field meet. The Knights placed 8th at last spring’s River Valley Conference meet. Some of those on last year’s roster are back and some new faces look to make an impact this spring.

  The Knights sent their 4X100-meter relay team to the 2017 Drake Relays in Des Moines. The same relay team made up of Jacob Jensen, Bryce Bemer, Miles McCullough, and Greg Hansen would win the event at the RVC meet, running to a finish in 44.43. A week later, the Knights would send five events to the state track meet. The Knights 4X200, 4X100 and spring medley relay teams were joined by Seamus Raney in the 800 and Bryce Bemer in the 200-meter dash went to state. The highest placing event was the Knights 4X200-meter relay team of Jensen, Bemer, McCullough, and Hansen in 8th.

  Athletes out for track at North Cedar are: Kole Murray, Miles McCullough, Joe Condon, Shawn Kintz, Nate Neal, Caleb Baker, Devon Willis, Ryan Baker, Brody Hawtrey, Evan Peterson, Dan Moore, JT Kash, Jacob Sander, Skyler Darts, Ryan Spahr, Brady Lehrman, Ethan Sahr, Seamus Raney, Chance Cinkovich, Dragon Cinkovich, Brady Burcum, Canden Wendt, Greg Hansen, Treat Spahr, Owen Meyer.

  North Cedar will host a home track meet on Tuesday, April 24. The Knights will run at the River Valley Conference meet in West Liberty on Thursday, May 3. Before that, North Cedar will be competing at 9 outdoor meets. Two early meets have been canceled due to weather, at Tipton and at Durant. North Cedar will run at Tipton once, in DeWitt, Solon, Monticello, Northeast, Cascade, and Camanche.

2018 Spring Preview: Tigers Have Good Balance This Year On Roster


TIPTON — The Tipton boy’s track and field team will look to take a step up the River Valley Conference ladder after returning almost half of their 34 athletes out this year, who competed at the 2017 River Valley Conference meet.  There, the Tigers placed 9th at the RVC meet scoring 53 points shattering their previous RVC high point total of 34 set in 2015. This year’s team has many familiar faces back and also get an influx of new talent.
The Tigers had five events qualify for the state meet a year ago.  the Tigers had three relays and two individual events compete. The Tiger relays that qualified were their 4X800 (Bryce Deerberg, Sam Bierman, Trent Pelzer, Noah Jedlicka), 4X400 (Dalton Clark, Isak Skeie, Dillon McCollough, Quinten Mesick) and shuttle hurdle relay team (Frank Bierman, Parker Jensen, Brandon Claussen, Wes Zell).  Two individuals, Quinten Mesick and Wes Zell also qualified.
Tipton has 34 athletes out this year.  Class breakdown for Tipton is 7 seniors, 7 juniors, 10 sophomores and 8 freshmen.
Out this season for the Tigers are Bryce Deerberg, Logan Hoffman, Quinten Mesick, Trysten Schwenker, Hunter Tenley, Blaise Thumma, Corey Wallick, Davis Butler, Ben Ellis, Ben Falkers, Dennis Gingerich, Noah Jedlicka, Andrew Stewart, Paden Zell, Gavin Belitz, Frank Bierman, Tommy Brown, Tiger Emrich, Austin Lenz, Mitch McMurrin, Jackson Murphy, Andrew Olseen, Trent Pelzer, Craig Shaffer, Carson Charves, Payten Elijah, Brandon Hines, Kayden Rezac, Nile Schuett, Caleb Shumaker, John Stroup and Brandon Valet.
The Tigers have a home meet on April 17 with the annual Tiger Relays and April 5.  The Tigers will host one of eight class 2A state qualifying meets this year on May 10.

The Tigers have had successes early in the season in the indoor season and with the outdoor season just in its beginning.  The Tigers have had two outdoor meets cancelled due to weather. Several Tipton events will challenge for top spots at this year’s RIver Valley Conference meet in West Liberty on May 3.

2018 Spring Preview: Beavers Look To Build On 2017

  WILTON — The Wilton Beavers are looking forward to the new season after having a successful 2017 outdoor season. 

  The Beavers team this year will be made up of the following athletes. They are Kortney Drake, LInsey Ford, Ansley Boorn, McKinnley Pittman, Chloe Wells, Meggan Hook, Mea Burkle, Emi Coss, Chey Rae, Brooke Doehrmann, Karlie Schult, Becca Ball, Lindsey Randolph, Emily Fausel, Abby Brown, Kayla Hildreth, Taylor Goldermann, Kallie Poor, Kirsten Jurgersen, Lexi Maurer, Abbi Wadden.

  The Beavers placed 8th at the River Valley Conference meet with 42.0 points, nearly setting a new high mark for most points scored at a conference meet. The 8th place finish equaled their highest RVC finish. Kortney Drake won the long jump at the conference meet and Kaylee Ford had a pair of top-10 finishes in distance events and Linsey Ford had a top-10 finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

  Wilton sent four events to state. Lange won the high jump at the state qualifying meet. Drake went to state in the 400-meter hurdles and Ford went in the 3,000-meter run. Wilton also had a relay team, their spring medley relay team. At state, Drake claimed the highest state finish with a 10th place finish in the 400-meter dash.

  Wilton will host the annual Kreimeyer Relays on Monday, April 9. Teams there are Davenport North, Durant, Bellevue Marquette. The Beavers will compete in 10 outdoor meets before the River Valley Conference meet in West Liberty on Thursday, May 3.

2018 Spring Preview: Wildcats excited to See What 2018 Offers

  DURANT — The Durant girl’s track and field team has a nice mix of athletes this year. The Wildcats have 25 on their roster for longtime coach Doug Frett. Having the higher numbers gives the Wildcats options this season. Durant placed 11th at the River Valley Conference meet and were led by a pair of top-10 Autumn Wolf finishes. The Wildcats had two relay events at the RVC meet to place sixth. Some of the athletes back from those relays are Breanna Moeller, Amorae Myers, Tori Novinski, Heidi Wolf and Ellie Berry.

  This year holds a lot of promise and opportunity for the Wildcats. Those out this season are Savanna Storm, Kayla Erbst, Kyrnan Liske-Rochholz, Eliana Berry, Kaitlyn Wiese, Heidi Wolf, Addisyn Skinner, Aubreauna Ryan, Amorae Myers, Aubrey Doerscher, Caitlin Bucksbaum, Victoria Novinski, Kayley Latham, Allie Peel, Lillian Nielsen, Chelsea Alderman, Morgan Mital, Madison Semsch, Breanna Moeller, Rayne Mangels, Brittany Kahl, Jordyn Ostrand, Kerrigan Johnson, Elizabeth Wurzer and Emily Seligman.

  The Wildcats will host a home meet twice this spring. The first is on Tuesday, April 17 and later in the week on Friday, April 20.

2018 Spring Preview: Knights Return Many From A Year Ago

  CLARENCE — The North Cedar girls track team will return many athletes off of their 2017 team, one that sent eleven events to state and five events to the Drake Relays. Last season North Cedar placed second to Cascade at the River Valley Conference meet last season and ahead of Monticello, who placed third. All three schools placed highly as a team at the 2017 state meet. The Knights had four RVC Champs including three individual crowns by Grace Proesch. This season, The Knights look to do event more.

  Qualifying for the state meet last year were four relay teams, the 4X100-meter relay, the 4X400-meter relay, the sprint medley relay and the shuttle hurdle relay. Individually Leah Crock Grace Proesch, Cassie Cox, Nicole Sander, Darby Hawtrey, Lexi Crist and Tessa Fields all qualified in at least one event. Most of the 2017 state contingent return, making the Knights a team to watch in Eastern Iowa and the state.

  Those athletes out for the North Cedar track team are: Grace Proesch, Lexi Crist, Carly Montz, Cassie Cox, Sadie Brown, Nicole Sander, Leah Crock, Amy Schroeder, Sam Koth, Kelly Proesch, Haven Brown, Andrea Wachendorf, Sydney Dennis, Karly Cerda, Hannah Hicks, Sarah Hansen, Kyra Lange, Kiley Chapman, Emma Boylen, Kayla Syring, Alyssa Higbee, Brittyn Wilhau, Tessa Fields, Grace Kelly Moore, Jenna Syring, Callie Meyer, Darby Hawtrey, Kassadie Galloway, Mariah Behrens, Kiara Musser, Averee Kasik.

  The Knights will compete in 9 outdoor meets this year before the River Valley Conference meet in West Liberty. The Knights host a home meet on Tuesday, April 10. Teams coming to the meet are Alburnett, Central City, East Buchanan, Bellevue Marquette, Tipton, Lisbon, Midland and Wilton.

  TIPTON — The Tipton girl’s track program will start year two under the guidance of coach Jill Engels. Last season, the Tigers placed 5th at the River Valley Conference, scoring 56 team points, their highest placing at anRVC meet and also the highest point total at a RVC meet. The Tigers had five events go to state and Jamie Kofron qualified for the Drake Relays in two events. A lot of that talent from the 2017 season returns.

  Out this season are Alyssa Elijah, Kenadi Krenz, Allison Ryan, Zoe Rezac and Tiffany Schott, Blake Ehler, Hunter Humphrey, Bee Simmermaker, Jamie Kofron, Amanda Smith, Emily Hermsen, Sara Webb, Karlee Kamberling, Sommer Daniel, Ashlyn Curry, Jocelyn Baltazar, Isabell Garcia, Araceli Martinez, Sydney Jargo, Courtney Petersen, Hailey Stewart, Rachel Bierman, Liz Bierman, Kayley Clark, Kelly Lieser, Jaydon Bierman, Zoe Stonebraker, Kallie Wallick, Halle McCollough, Alycia Barclay, Mariah Petersen, Hannah Hodges.

  Jamie Kofron won two RVC titles last year, one in the shot put the other the discus. She placed in the top-5 in each event at state. Hunter Humphrey placed 3rd in the 100-meter dash, Tiffany Schott placed 3rd in the 400-meter hurdles, Kenzie Mente had two, top-10 finishes in distance events, Amanda Smith was 7th in the 800 and then freshmen Kamryn Chapman and Sommer Daniel each had top-10 finishes at the RVC meet. Mente ran in two events at state. The Tigers 4X800-meter relay team of Smith, Mente, Schott and Alyssa Elijah also competed at state.

  Tipton will compete in 10 outdoor meets before the RVC meet in West Liberty on May 3. The Tigers were to host three home meets, but the first of two co-ed meets was canceled due to weather. The annual Tigerette Relays are scheduled for Thursday, April 12. The Tigers will get a boost from hosting a state qualifying meet on May 10.

Indoor Season Begins For Tipton Girl’s Track

TIPTON — The indoor track and field season is underway for the Tipton girl’s track and field team.  The Tigers traveled to Wartburg College today for the first of five indoor meets this spring.  The outdoor season will kick-off on Tuesday, March 27 at home when the Tigers host the first of two co-ed meets with eight teams coming to town - Clear Creek-Amana, Dyersville-Beckman, Iowa City Regina, Maquoketa, Midland, North Cedar, Solon and West Branch.
The Tipton indoor season will continue this Monday at the University of Northern Iowa when the Tigers run at the UNI-Dome.

TIPTON — The indoor track and field season is underway for the Tipton boy’s track and field team.  The Tigers traveled to Loras College today for the first of five indoor meets this spring.  The outdoor season will kick-off on Tuesday, March 27 at home when the Tigers host the first of two co-ed meets with eight teams coming to town - Clear Creek-Amana, Dyersville-Beckman, Iowa City Regina, Maquoketa, Midland, North Cedar, Solon and West Branch.

Indoor Season Begins For Area Track Teams

TIPTON — The indoor track and field season is underway for this spring and area track and field teams are about ready to begin their seasons.  Both Durant and North Cedar track teams are beginning their season at the University of Northern Iowa indoor meet next week.   
North Cedar’s outdoor season will kick-off on Tuesday, March 27 at home when the both Knight teams will run at the first of two co-ed meets in Tipton with - Clear Creek-Amana, Dyersville-Beckman, Iowa City Regina, Maquoketa, Midland, Tipton, Solon and West Branch.
The Durant girl’s team will kick-off their outdoor season on Tuesday, March 27 at the Wapello Invitational.
The Wilton track teams will run at the RVC indoor meet on March in Dubuque.  The Beavers will open the outdoor season a week later with the girl’s team running at Wapello and the boy’s team running at Tipton.
