Tigers Collect Shootout Win Over Maquoketa, 49-42

TIPTON - The Tigers week 6 game will show a 49-42 win over Maquoketa, but how they got there, will be remembered as a wild game. The Tigers and Cardinals were tied at 14 at halftime, but the Tigers would outscore Maquoketa 35 to 28 in the second half to capture their second win of the season to improve to 2-3 overall. The Tigers will host Anamosa Friday night looking to even their record at 3-3. The Tigers will play in the 2020 playoffs on Friday, October 16.

The Maquoketa offense ran through senior quarterback Kannon Coakley. Maquoketa moved the football mostly through the air in the football game. Coakley had a monster game passing the football. He has mainly been a running threat for the Cardinals as his 241 yards and two touchdown game in their game against West Liberty earlier this season would suggest. Coakley entered the game with THS with only 276 yards and he was still looking for his first touchdown pass. That changed Friday. Coakley doubled his season passing yard total and tossed not only his first touchdown pass of the season, but five touchdown passes in the game. Coakley finished with 368 yards passing in the game. The Tigers did limit his production running though to only 14 yards on 11 carries. The Tiger defensive line plugged up the running lanes.

As much as the Cardinals passed the football, Tipton moved the football on the ground, rushing for 452 yards in the game with seven touchdowns and a per carry rush average of 8.1 yards. The Tigers had three rushers top the 100-yard mark led by Payten Elijah with 196 yards on 19 carries and four touchdowns. Lake Anderson had a career high 125 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns and a 7.8-yard average. Levi Daniel got in on the rushing totals, adding 109 yards on 16 carries for a 6.8-yard average. Carter Hill added 25 yards on five carries. With the totals, THS moved to No. 6 in Class 2A in rushing total yards with 1,430 as a team. Elijah now has 725 yards on the ground which puts him at No. 11 in Class 2A. Two other running backs from Tipton’s District - Camanche’s Cade Everson and West Liberty’s Jahsiah Galvan - are in the top-10.

The Tigers scored the game’s first points when Lake Anderson crossed the goal line from five yards out for a 7-0 THS lead in the opening quarter. The Tigers would extend their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter when Payten Elijah had a 40-yard scoring scamper. The Cardinals finally dented the scoreboard in the second quarter on two possessions late. After Elijah’s touchdown run, the Cardinals special teams accounted for a score. Caiden Atienza would take the Tipton kick-off back for an 81-yard touchdown to cut Tipton’s lead in half at 14-7. By the end of the half Maquoketa was pushing to score again under a minute. There, quarterback Kannon Coakley found Atienza for a 5-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14 at halftime.

The third quarter saw the Tigers extend their lead with two touchdown runs. Elijah scored from six yards out for his second touchdown run to give Tipton a 21-14 lead. Later, Anderson scored his second rushing touchdown of the game from 10 yards out to set the score at 28-14 after three quarters.

The final quarter is something that many have not and will not see again. The two teams combined for 49 points between them in the quarter. Maquoketa would get within seven points of Tipton four times in the quarter, but never take the lead. The Tigers answered the Cardinals first three scores of the final quarter each time with one of their own. Elijah electrified the crowd with a 77-yard dash to give Tipton a 35-21 lead after Maquoketa drew within seven points. Elijah again had a big play for a touchdown, this one for 39 yards after Maquoketa got within 35-28 to give Tipton a 42-28 lead. Lake Anderson punched in his third scoring run, a 4-yard touchdown, to answer the Cardinals score making it 42-35, to give Tipton a 49-35 lead. Maquoketa did cut the Tiger lead to seven points late, setting the score at its final of 49-42, but could get no closer. Maquoketa quarterback Kannon Coakley passed for five touchdowns in the game, with four of those in the 28-point Maquoketa fourth quarter.
