Indians make quick work of Durant in sweep
By Ryan Stonebraker
Sports Editor, Tipton Conservative
CAMANCHE — It was a tough road trip for Durant last Friday as the Wildcats made the trip to Camanche. Both Indian programs are near the top of the River Valley Conference standings, and each has a distinct style of play. The girl’s team is a physical team while the boy’s team likes to make basketball games into a track meet.
In the girl’s game, Camanche’s perimeter game was firing on all cylinders.
The Indians made 11 three pointers in the game from four different players. The Indians led 17-9 after the first quarter and 34-23 at halftime. The Indians took control of the basketball game in the third quarter, scoring a season high 30 points in the quarter to extend their lead to 64-30 after three quarters. The win was the fourth straight for Camanche after suffering a loss at West Branch on December 19.
Marly Bussa and Courtney Schnoor are a devastating 1-2 punch that the Indians throw at teams and they did a lot of damage in the game. Bussa led Camanche in scoring with 22 points including a 5-for-7 night from the three-point line. Schnoor, an Upper Iowa recruit and leading scorer in the RVC North, scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds. The Wildcats held down Lea Lefebure from her scoring average of 7.7 points, but Lefebure made up for it with 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.
Aubrey Werthmann scored 14 and Autumn Wolf 12 for the Wildcats. The 1-2 punch for the Wildcats combined to both score in double figures in the same game for the ninth time this season.
Camanche improved to 10-4 while Durant fell to 2-10.
In the boy’s game, the Wildcats had to battle the leading scoring team in the River Valley North. The Indians average 77.7 points a game, 13 more than the second team in the division,
NE Goose Lake. The Indians average is also the highest in class 2A, ahead of AHSTW, Avoca. Statewide, the Indians are third in scoring in all classes behind Grand View Christian (89.2 ppg) and North Linn (81.3 ppg).
To their credit, Durant held their own in the first quarter, trailing only two points, 17 to 15 after the first quarter. It was the second quarter that got away from the Wildcats and allowed the Indians to get enough distance to maintain a big lead the rest of the way. Camanche outscored Durant 25-13 in the second quarter to break a close game and take a 42-
28 halftime lead.
Camanche could not contain senior Luke Whitlock. Whitlock scored 23 points, his first point total over 20 points since scoring a season high 32 against West Liberty. Whitlock has been on a roll, scoring in double digits in the last eight Wildcat games. He is the fifth leading scorer to date in the RVC South with a 15.8-point scoring average. Bryce Lafrenz scored 9 and Leo Callison 7. Dev Patel
scored 26 and Dakota Soenksen 23 to lead Camanche in scoring.
Durant fell to 4-5 while Camanche improved to 10-1.

MONTICELLO — The first road trip of the new year was not a pleasant one for the Wilton basketball teams’ last Friday as both the Beaver boy’s and girl’s teams lost at Monticello in a RVC cross-division doubleheader. Wilton began the post Christmas break part of their schedule last Tuesday at home when they hosted West Liberty.
The Beaver girls team lost 58-40, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Panthers used a 22-7 second quarter run to turn the game around in the first half. Wilton took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, but the big Panther run in the second quarter, gave Monticello a 28-17 halftime lead. The two teams played close in the third quarter, but Monticello extended their lead by five points to 45-29 going to the final quarter. Monticello scored over 50 points for the fifth time this season in seven wins.
Wilton shot 34-percent for the game and made 16 trips to the free throw line, making seven of those attempts. Kortney Drake scored 12 points grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 assists to lead Wilton in each category.
Emily Lange scored 7 points and had 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Wilton got 13 points off the bench from Falloyn Grunder (7) and Lexi Maurer (6).
In the boy’s game, Wilton lost 68-22. Big runs by Monticello in the first half helped secure the win for the Panthers. It was the third straight victory for the Panthers and third over an RVC school. The Panthers also hold wins over Iowa City Regina and West Branch.
Monticello opened up a 17-5 lead after the first quarter with a 23-6 run in the second quarter to take a 40-11 halftime lead. The Panthers kept the pressure on, outscoring Wilton 12 to 1 in the third quarter to take a 52-12 lead after three quarters.
Wilton was led in scoring by Jared Townsend and Isaac Hunter who each had 4 points off the bench in the game.
Jacob Manternach scored 19 and Kyle Sperfslage scored 12 points and turned in a great all around game with 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 rebounds.

Around the RVC: Wilton gets big home win to start 2017
By Ryan Stonebraker
Sports Editor, Tipton Conservative
WILTON — The Wilton Beavers picked up a big home victory over West Liberty to start 2017 last Tuesday. The Beavers outscored the Comets 23-10 in the first half and 28-7 in the second half to take a 51-17, River Valley Conference game. The Beavers beat the Comets 57-19 in their season opener on the road, back in November.
Emily Lange scored 15 points and had 7 rebounds and 6 steals while Kortney Drake scored 11 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 steals and 3 assists.
In the boy’s game, Wilton lost by one-point, 52-51 after a last second shot to win the game missed. The Beavers led 16-12 after the first quarter but trailed 28-26 at halftime. The Beavers outscored West Liberty 13-7 in the third quarter, but the Comets rallied in the final quarter to pull out the win.
Seth Feldman led West Liberty with 16 points while Matt Paustian and Jake Fratzke each had 12 points to lead Wilton in scoring.
Bears Down Wildcats In Durant
DURANT — A jumbled mess. That was what the RVC South standings looked like last week prior to the start of the second half of the season. Four teams, Durant, West Branch, Tipton and Iowa City Regina all were within striking distance of each other with many important games last week. One of those games was in Durant where West Branch traveled to Durant in search of their second win in a row. There, they got it, beating Durant 71-58 to get their fourth road RVC South victory in five tries. The Bears improved to 6-4 with the win, while Durant fell to .500 (4-4).
The Bears shot 55-percent from the floor in the game and made more free throws (15) than Durant attempted (11). Those two factors were enough to help the Bears get the big win. Cooper Kablea had a big game. Kabela came into the basketball game the leading scorer in the RVC South and in all of class 2A for points scored. He is second in all classes in points scored. After a slow start that saw him have just two points in the first quarter, Kabela scored 7 or more points in each of the remaining three quarters. He had 18 of his game high 27 points in the second half including going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Beau Cornwell added 18 points, 11 in the second half, to the Bears offensive efforts. Those two were part of four Bears that scored in double figures. Ben Thompson scored 12 and Tanner Lukavsky 10.
West Branch clung to a two-point, 15-13 lead after the first quarter. The Bears extended their lead to eight at halftime, 31-23. Each team’s offense scored 19 points in the third quarter. West Branch took a 10-point lead with seven minutes left in the quarter and led by as many as 12 points before settling for an 8-point lead heading to the final quarter. The Bears took a double digit lead - 57-47 - with 6:00 left to play and would not trail the rest of the game by fewer than 10 points.
Eight Wildcats scored in the game. Luke Whitlock scored 15 and Mason Compton 11 to lead Durant in scoring. Jake Conley came off the bench to score 9 points.
In the girl’s game, West Branch played a consistent game to get a 58-37 win. The Bears beat the Wildcats 53-44 in late November. The Bears win was there second in three games. West Branch improved to 7-4 with the win. The Bears led after each quarter in the basketball game and scored 11 or more points in each quarter. The 58 points is the third highest point total in a game this season for West Branch. The previous two were also against RVC South schools in road wins - 65 at West Liberty and 59 at Wilton.
West Branch led 18-10 after the first quarter and though the Wildcats closed the scoring gap in the second quarter (11-8), West Branch held an 11-point lead at halftime.
The Bears only outscored the Wildcats 13-11 in the third quarter, however they would carry a 42-29 lead into the final quarter. There, the Bears doubled up the Wildcats, outscoring Durant 16-8 in the final quarter.
West Branch’s guard court gave the Wildcats problems all night. Junior Tatum Koenig led West Branch in scoring with 22 points while senior Haley Mullinix had 16 points. The two combined for 9 steals, 6 assists and 6 rebounds. Abbey
Fryauf had a 10 rebound game and Abby Knoop scored 8 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Durant was led by Aubrey Werthmann who scored 16 points, 11 of those came in the second half. Autumn Wolf scored 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds and Hannah Happ turned in an 8-point, 6-steal game off the bench.
Knights Comeback Falls Short
CAMANCHE — The North Cedar Knights almost pulled off their biggest conference win of the season last Tuesday when they traveled to Camanche.
The Knights had to rally from down five at halftime and nine after three quarters. The Knights outscored the Indians 16 to 9 in the final quarter, but came up two points short of tying the game, falling 50-47 on the road.
The Indians have played close games against fellow RVC North schools, beating Monticello
by two, Cascade by four and NE Goose Lake by five before
the scare from the Knights. North Cedar fell to the Indians at home 68-54 in their season opener on November 22.
North Cedar was led by starters Leah Crock and Tessa Fields with 14 and 13 points. Crock grabbed 8 rebounds and Fields had 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals. Kourtney Bendixen scored 6 points and pulled down 4 rebounds off the bench.
North Cedar trailed 15-12 after the first quarter and 23-18 at halftime. Camanche outscored
the Knights 18 to 13 in the third quarter. Marly Bussa led three Indians in double figures with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals. Camanche had 16 steals, 12 assists and 39 rebounds in the game. North Cedar had 12 steals, 15 assists and 32 rebounds in the game.
Knight Boys Struggle To Keep Up With Indians
CAMANCHE — The North Cedar Knights had a tough task last Tuesday when they traveled to Camanche to take on one of the state’s highest scoring teams. The Indians are in the top-5 for the most points scored in a game for the entire state. Last Tuesday the Indians beat the Knights 82-50 and in doing so, topped the 70-point mark in their seventh game in ten contests this year. The Indians have been marching through the River Valley Conference North division this year with a 4-1 record and have won RVC North games by an average of 23 points.
Against the Knights, Camanche raced to a 23-11 lead after the first quarter and built on that lead the rest of the game. North Cedar played their best basketball in the second and fourth quarters where the Indians only outscored them by six points in each quarter.
Carter Johnson had a team high 14 points and Owen Meyer scored 13 for North Cedar.
Dev Patel led three Indian starters in double figures with 21 points.

NO INCREASE IN IOWA FOOTBALL SEASON TICKETS FOR 2017; RENEWAL PROCESS BEGINS JAN. 3
UI Department of Athletics accepting season ticket applications
IOWA CITY, Iowa --
With an attractive home
football schedule that includes five opponents who participated in 2016
postseason bowls, the University of Iowa athletics department announced
today that season tickets for the 2017 campaign
will remain the same as in 2016. General public season tickets for the
seven home games will be $405, with faculty/staff season tickets
remaining at $335. UI student season tickets are $150, and include all
seven home games.
Iowa is launching the season ticket renewal process via email Jan. 3. Season ticket renewal forms will be available online at hawkeyesports.com/tickets beginning Jan. 3. Paper
applications will be mailed to individuals Feb. 1.
The renewal deadline for public and faculty/staff season tickets is March 31, 2017. Season ticket holders earn ticketing priority over the general public for single game, special
events, and postseason contests, in addition to saving nearly $75 over the total cost of single game prices.
All
renewal and new season ticket holders will be provided an opportunity
to upgrade and/or select their seating locations based on availability,
and will receive selection dates
and times in early April. This process will be based on priority point
totals and I-Club annual gift membership levels, and will conclude in
early May.
I-Club contributions, which fulfill regular and postseason seating and parking requirements, can be made at jointheiclub.com. I-Club gifts made by March 31
will be included in
priority points for the 2017 season ticket selection/upgrade process.
I-Club contributions -- which provide Hawkeye student-athletes the tools
they need to succeed at the highest levels -- must be made by May 31 to ensure proper mailing of season tickets and
parking passes. I-Club renewal forms will be emailed in mid-February.
The
Hawkeyes posted an 8-4 regular season mark in 2016, winning their final
three Big Ten Conference games and winning three of four rivalry trophy
games. Iowa placed second in
the Big Ten’s West Division after winning the division title in 2015.
The Hawkeyes close the season Jan. 2 in the 2017 Outback Bowl, the 10th January bowl game under head coach Kirk Ferentz.
“We
are very appreciative for the continued support of our season ticket
holders and excited to keep the season ticket price the same as last
year,” said Gary Barta, UI director
of athletics. “The atmosphere inside and outside Kinnick Stadium is the
best in the country and we will continue to work hard to provide a
wonderful fan experience.
“We have an attractive home schedule this fall and anticipate a great game day atmosphere for all seven home contests.”
Fans
who are not currently season ticket holders and interested in
purchasing season tickets will have the opportunity to go online and
select seats beginning Jan. 9. The available
seats are based on open seats from the previous year.
North
end zone season ticket holders will not be impacted for the 2017
football season. The 2017 north end zone season ticket holders -- and
any other customer displaced
by the renovation project -- will be assigned a time and date for the
spring of 2018 to choose their seats before all other season ticket
holders. They will have their choice of new north end zone seats or any
available main stand seats that were not sold
as a season ticket location for 2017. The patron will be required to
contribute the required per-seat gift, if applicable, for the respective
seats they choose. No new season tickets will be sold in the north end
zone for the 2017 season. More information
about the Kinnick Edge project, including premium seating options, can
be found at
www.KinnickEdge.org.
Iowa’s
seven-game home schedule includes five Big Ten Conference games. Iowa’s
Big Ten home opponents include defending Big Ten champion Penn State (Sept. 23), and College Football
Playoff participant Ohio State (Nov. 4). The Hawkeyes host Illinois for Homecoming (Oct. 7), Floyd of Rosedale rival Minnesota (Oct. 28), and Purdue (Nov. 18).
Nonconference home opponents include the season-opening contest against Wyoming (Sept. 2) and a Sept. 16 date with North Texas, two teams that played in bowl games following the
2016 season. Start times and television information are not yet available.
Gustafson Earns 2nd Straight B1G Honor Roll Plaudit
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- For the second straight
week, University of Iowa sophomore Megan Gustafson has been named to the
Big Ten Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Honor Roll, the
conference office announced Monday. It is the fourth
weekly honor of Gustafson’s career and her third of the season.
Gustafson averaged 21.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in
a pair of Big Ten Conference games against Illinois and Nebraska last
week. She led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 7-of-12 (.583) from
the field at Illinois. Gustafson pulled down
13 boards (6 offensive) to register her eighth double-double of the
season. She also dished out three assists and went 7-for-8 from the free
throw line against the Illini.
The Port Wing, Wisconsin, native had another
stellar performance against Nebraska. She recorded a team-high 22 points
and a team-leading nine rebounds to lead Iowa to its first Big Ten
victory of the season. She shot an impressive .750

and seventh in double-doubles (8) and field goals made (110).
IOWA’S AKRUM WADLEY TO PLAY SENIOR SEASON
IOWA CITY — University of Iowa running back
Akrum Wadley will remain with the Hawkeye football program for
his senior season in 2017. Wadley and Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz
confirmed that a final decision has been made on Thursday.
“It
is positive news to know that Akrum has made the decision to be with
our program for his senior season,” said Ferentz. “Akrum has displayed
growth and maturity during his career, and had an outstanding season in
2016. We look forward to Akrum being a key member of our team in
2017.”
“It
was the right decision for me and my family,” said Wadley. “I met with
my parents and we laid out the pros and cons, and came to the decision
that it would be best for me to stay at Iowa for my senior year. The
main three reasons are to earn my degree, to have another year to
prepare physically, and to not end my collegiate career on a bad note;
we have some unfinished business.
“I
would like to thank coach Ferentz. We had good conversations and he
let me know that he would be there either way, he would have my back. I
also want to express my appreciation for all the support from my
teammates, and the great and loyal Iowa fans.”
Wadley
(5-foot-11, 191 pounds) is a native of Newark, New Jersey. He led the
Hawkeyes in rushing in 2016 with 168 attempts for 1,081 yards and
10 touchdowns. He ranked second in receiving with 36 receptions for
315 yards and three touchdowns.
Wadley
rushed for over 100 yards in six games, leading the offense with 115
rushing and 21 receiving yards in the 2017 Outback Bowl. He teamed
with senior LeShun Daniels, Jr., to become the only two Hawkeyes two
surpass 1,000 rushing yards in the same season.
Wadley
has 1,763 career rushing yards to rank 18th in career rushing, and he
ranks 20th in career scoring with 120 points. He also has 43 career
receptions for 408 yards to total 2,171 career all-purpose yards. Only
three Hawkeyes have rushed for over 1,000 yards in more than one season
(Sedrick Shaw, Fred Russell, Ladell Betts).
Peter Jok Candidate for Senior CLASS Award
Hawkeye senior leads Big Ten in scoring
LINCOLN, Neb. -- University of Iowa senior Peter Jok
is one of 30 NCAA men’s basketball student-athletes selected as
candidates today for the 2016-17 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate
basketball. To be eligible for the award,
a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and
have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community,
classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School,
the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and
encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a
positive impact as leaders
in their communities.
Jok leads the Big Ten in
scoring (22.1 ppg) and free throw accuracy (.920). He ranks 22nd in
career scoring at Iowa with 1,204 points. Jok and his teammates have
assisted each spring in the Iowa Day of Caring and is on pace to
graduate
this spring.
The list will be narrowed
to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the
official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting
system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate
and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs
of community, classroom, character and competition.
