MONTICELLO — The first road trip of the new year was not a pleasant one for the Wilton basketball teams’ last Friday as both the Beaver boy’s and girl’s teams lost at Monticello in a RVC cross-division doubleheader. Wilton began the post Christmas break part of their schedule last Tuesday at home when they hosted West Liberty.
The Beaver girls team lost 58-40, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Panthers used a 22-7 second quarter run to turn the game around in the first half. Wilton took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, but the big Panther run in the second quarter, gave Monticello a 28-17 halftime lead. The two teams played close in the third quarter, but Monticello extended their lead by five points to 45-29 going to the final quarter. Monticello scored over 50 points for the fifth time this season in seven wins.
Wilton shot 34-percent for the game and made 16 trips to the free throw line, making seven of those attempts. Kortney Drake scored 12 points grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 assists to lead Wilton in each category.
Emily Lange scored 7 points and had 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Wilton got 13 points off the bench from Falloyn Grunder (7) and Lexi Maurer (6).
In the boy’s game, Wilton lost 68-22. Big runs by Monticello in the first half helped secure the win for the Panthers. It was the third straight victory for the Panthers and third over an RVC school. The Panthers also hold wins over Iowa City Regina and West Branch.
Monticello opened up a 17-5 lead after the first quarter with a 23-6 run in the second quarter to take a 40-11 halftime lead. The Panthers kept the pressure on, outscoring Wilton 12 to 1 in the third quarter to take a 52-12 lead after three quarters.
Wilton was led in scoring by Jared Townsend and Isaac Hunter who each had 4 points off the bench in the game.
Jacob Manternach scored 19 and Kyle Sperfslage scored 12 points and turned in a great all around game with 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 rebounds.
