TIPTON — On March 5, the Tipton Tiger Wrestling team held their annual end of the season banquet. Coaches, parents and friends honored 18 Tiger wrestlers and four managers who helped to make the 2016-17 wrestling season a success. As a team, this year’s Tigers compiled a dual meet record of 13-10 and finished 5 th at the River Valley Conference meet. Individually, the Tigers crowned two conference champions in junior Ben Emrich and freshman Austin Lenz. They also advanced 4 wrestlers to the district tournament and advanced one wrestler (Ben Emrich) to the State Tournament in Des Moines. Ben Emrich also led the team in several statistical categories including wins (41) and pins (30), as well as setting a new school record for team points in a season (306). Junior John Crowley led the team in takedowns (87), match points (257), and tied for 2nd in wins (37) with Lenz.
Ben Emrich was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Wrestlers, while senior Zach Jones received the Most Improved Wrester award. Sophomore Chance Koch was selected as the team’s Most Dedicated Wrestler, while John Crowley earned the Hardest Worker award. Austin Lenz was chosen as the Freshman of the Year, and Levi Mohr earned the Coaches Appreciation
Award. Guts Club members included Austin Lenz and Chance Koch.
Other members of the 2016-17 wrestling team include Justin McAtee, Conor Cromer, Sabina Halleman, Isak Skeie, Nick Paul, Keith Penningroth, Lucas Barnum, Gavin Belitz, Tommy Brown, Brenden Leeper, Kaleb Mesick, and Brendan Nantz. Team managers were Finn Jordan, Megan Dierks, Emily Falkers, and Madison O’Leary.
