Mason City Steve Hugo 2015 Swimming & Diving Golden Plaque of Distinction Recipient


Mason City Swimming Coach Steve Hugo will be honored with the Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union's Golden Plaque of Distinction Award at Iowa Girls State Swimming Meet Saturday, November 7 in Marshalltown.

The Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession.

     Hugo has been coaching at his alma mater since 1984, coaching both girls' and boys’ swim teams in addition to leading Mason City’s club squad. Under his guidance, Mason City girls swimming has captured four state team titles, 12 regional crowns and four league championships. He has coached 14 individual and relay state champions, 22 all-Americans and his swimmers own three state records. 
Hugo was a part of Mason City’s first state championship swim team in 1975.  A four-time state qualifier in his own right, he won state crowns in the 100 breastroke and 200 IM.      Steve and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of  three children: Zane, who is the girls head swimming and diving coach at Iowa City High,  Bobbie and Charlie. Steve and Nancy have one grandson, Hudson.
