Mount Vernon's Shirley Ryan 2015 Volleyball Recipient of IGHSAU Golden Plaque of Distinction


     The Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession.

    Former Mount Vernon Volleyball Coach Shirley Ryan is the 2015 volleyball recipient of the Golden Plaque of Distinction Award. Ryan will be honored before the start of the Class 3A State Championship match Friday, November 13.

    Ryan coached volleyball at Mount Vernon for 38 years and owns an overall coaching record of 829-331-114, which ranks third on Iowa’s career wins list. She led the Mustangs to three state championships in three different classes. She won her first title in 1985 with back-to-back state crowns in 2009 and 2010. Along the way, Ryan's teams captured 15 conference  titles.

    A strong advocate for advancing the sport of volleyball, Ryan served stints on the IGHSAU’s  volleyball advisory committee. She has also been active in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association and currently serves on the IGHSAU Volleyball Hall of Fame Committee.

    Shirley and her husband, Michael, are the parents of sons David and Russ. They have nine grandchildren, including three granddaughters that Ryan was able to coach at Mount Vernon. Shirley and Michael also have two great grandchildren.
