The Beginning - The Original Six

Listed below are where teams are and what year they joined the National Hockey League.  Below is a brief history lesson about the league’s origins.

Beginning:
The National Hockey League was organized in 1917 in Montreal Quebec Canada.  The Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs were the first two teams in 1917.  That followed an expansion in the 1920’s.  Four teams joined - Boston, Chicago, Detroit and New York - marking the first American League teams.

Original-Six Era:
This wording was given to the six teams that made up the NHL for 25 seasons from 1942 and the 1967 expansion time.  They were the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs.  All are still active in the league as of the 2014-15 season.
By the 1960’s the original 6 owners were getting out and newer ownership groups were coming in that were more receptive to expansion.  Other professional leagues (MLB, NFL, NBA) were growing.
In 1965, it was decided to expand into six markets - Los Angeles, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and St. Louis and the Oakland area.
The next two rounds of expansion in 1970 and 1972 added one team from Canada and one from the United States.
