TIPTON — Tipton freshman Alex Wiese was one of three Conservative Sports volleyball players that named to the 2015 River Valley Conference Elite Team. Wiese took the conference by storm this season, leading a youth movement conference wide, with 362 kills. She averaged 3.9 kills per set this season and helped lead the Tigers to a 21-match win season and a spot in the IGHSAU top-15 rankings.
Wiese joined fellow RVC Elite team members Haley Poula of West Branch and Sarah Lehman of Iowa City Regina with kill totals in the top-12 in class 2A. Wiese was 12th while Poula was 8th with 390 and Lehman was 9th with 387 kills.
Wiese wasn’t just a hitter, as she played all around. She finished second on the Tigers with 296 digs; second in blocks with 23 and served 231-for-286 with 30 ace serves.
North Cedar duo Darby Hawtrey and Taylor Kress also were Elite team selections. Hawtrey led The RVC North in kills with 335, 26 more than the second place kill total. She served 285-for-315 with 48 ace serves which led the North.
Kress led class 2A in digs with 640. She averaged nearly six per set. Kress was also an excellent server. She was second to Hawtrey in ace serves with 46 and served 370-for-393.
The rest of the Elite team were from West Liberty, Hailey Daufeldt, Audra Bridenstine, Maddie Simon and Cassedi Simon; from West Branch, Trystin Luneckas, Haley Poula and Bailey Lukavsky; Abby Ruggeberg from Cascade and Sarah Lehman from Iowa City Regina.
Six Conservative Sports players were selected for the RVC South Divisional Team. They were Maggie Bormann, Amanda Smith and Jamie Kofron from Tipton, Shannon Telsrow and Brinn Grunder from Durant and Aubrey Putman from Wilton were the selections.
Smith led Tipton in assists with 616 for a 6.7 set average. Bormann was 4th in the South in digs with 354 and Kofron had 145 kills and served 271-for-289 with 15 aces.
Telsrow was 6th in the South in kills with 293. She also was 9th in serving, going 314-for-327 with 30 aces. Grunder was 10th in the South in kills with 216 and served 292-for-331 with 37 aces.
Putman had 209 kills, served 153-for-192 with 32 aces and had 247 digs.
Four Knights were selected for the RVC North Divisional Team. They were Madison Hawtrey, Aubrey Cady, Emily Hay and Becca Ahrendsen.
Hawtrey led the North in serving, going 412-for-428 with 45 ace serves and a serve efficiency of .963. She was 6th in the North in kills with 225 and second in digs to Kress with 419. Cady was 8th in kills in the North with 162 and 10th in blocks with 32. Hay was third in the North with 446 assists and Ahrendsen was fourth in assists with 413.
North Cedar coach Traci Smith was named the RVC North Coach of The year after leading the Knights to a North division title, a state ranking most of the season, and a deep tournament run to a class 2A Regional Final.
Four players were named to the Honorable Mention Team. They were Alyssa Crock of Tipton, Cathy Ralfs of Duran; Reagan Scarboro of Wilton and Kate Pruess of North Cedar
The River Valley Conference sent two teams to the state tournament this year in West Liberty (3A) and West Branch (2A). North Cedar played in a regional final and won the North while West Branch won the South in the regular season. The Comets beat the Bears in the finals of the RVC Tournament.
