Kofron Sets New Meet Record In Shot Put Win

  WASHINGTON — Not on the original 2018 spring outdoor schedule, the Tigers traveled to the Washington Demon Invitational last Thursday to make-up a cancellation of the West Delaware Hawk Invite the same night. The Tigers had entered West Delaware meet after having yet another meet canceled due to crazy spring weather. After the Hawk Invite was canceled, THS packed up their stuff and headed South. The Tigers were not the only ones. Teams from Mason City, Waterloo East, Carlisle, Dunkerton, Wapsie Valley, and North Cedar joined the field, making the meet a 15-team event. There, the Tigers held their own, placing 6th in the team and scoring 41 team points, nine points out of fourth and four points out of fifth place.

  Tipton was led by junior Jamie Kofron’s finishes in the field events. Kofron won the shot put with a best throw of 44-feet, 3.5 inches. That throw broke a meet record set in 1992 by a thrower from Iowa City, City High. Kofron added a runner-up finish in the discus where she had the best throw of 132-0.

  The Tigers placed second in two relay events. The Tigers distance medley relay team of Emily Hermsen, Rachel Bierman, Alyssa Elijah, and Amanda Smith were runners-up in a time of 4:41.70. The Tigers also were runners-up in the 4X800-meter relay event with the team of Karlee Kamberling, Tiffany Schott, Hailey Stewart, and Rachel Bierman in a time of 11:00.14.

  The Tigers had two distance events have two, top-10 finishers. In the 1,500-meter run, Amanda Smith was 7th and Kallie Wallick 10th and in the 3,000-meter run, Kallie Wallick was 6th and Zoe Stonebraker was 9th.

  Other top-10 Tipton finishes were Sommer Daniel 4th in the 400-meter dash, Tiffany Schott 7th in the 400-meter hurdles and Rachel Bierman 9th in the 200-meter dash. The Tigers 4X400-meter relay team placed 5th.

Knights Head To Southern Iowa Again For Track Meet
  WASHINGTON — The North Cedar girls track team is getting familiar with the state’s geography, specifically the southern part of the state. For the second time in three, weeks, a weather cancellation sent the Knights South for a make-up meet. After making a trip to Eddyville for the Rocket Relays in recent weeks, the cancellation of a meet in Manchester last Thursday sent North Cedar to the Washington Demon Relays the same night. There, North Cedar placed 12th with 28 team points. The Knights have been hit with some sickness and some injuries in recent weeks. The Knights still are primed to make a good showing at this week’s Drake Relays and next months state meet, both at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

  In field events, North Cedar had a top-10 finisher in three of the four field events. Darby Hawtrey placed third in the high jump with a best jump of 4-feet, 10 inches. Other top finishes were Callie Meyer 5th in the discus with a throw of 107-08 and Leah Crock 6th in the shot put with a best throw of 36-07.

  The Knights had a runner-up finish and a third-place finish in relay events at the meet. They came from their shuttle hurdle relay team and their 4X400-meter relay team. The Knights 4X400-meter relay team of Sydney Dennis, Cassie Cox, Tessa Fields, and Grace Proesch placed second in 4:18.94. The Knights shuttle hurdle relay team of Kelly Proesch, Darby Hawtrey, Tessa Fields and Andrea Wachendorf placed third in 1:09.11.

  Kelly Proesch had the top individual event finish for North Cedar, placing 4th in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.24.
