OLATHE, Kan. - Director of Athletics Todd Garrett announced Todd Sturdy as the next head football coach at MNU.
"I am excited to have Coach Todd Sturdy join the MNU family as our next head football coach," said Garrett. "His experience and success at multiple levels of collegiate football speaks for itself, but his passion for developing young men through football is the core of who Coach Sturdy is. His focus on creating a positive culture, a commitment to excellence on and off the field while intentionally developing strong Christian leaders make him a tremendous fit for MNU Football."
Sturdy comes to MNU after several years as an assistant/coordinator in NCAA Division 1 at Eastern Washington (OC, 2007), Washington State (OC, 2008-2011), Iowa State (asst/OC, 2012-2015), and Northern Iowa (OC, 2016). Prior to 2007 he was the head coach at NAIA St. Ambrose (Iowa) for 12 years, where he won 6 conference titles and reached the NAIA Playoffs multiple times. For the last 2 seasons he helped coach his son's high school team.
The Tipton, Iowa, native was 85-40 in 12 seasons as head coach for his alma mater, St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa. The winningest coach in the program's history, his teams won five Mid-States Football Association-Midwest League championships and had a 42-8 league record in his last seven seasons at the helm, including six-straight playoff appearances. In 2006 he was NAIA Region 2 Coach of the Year, with the team going a perfect 10-0 in the regular season.
His accomplishments at St. Ambrose began in his first season as he guided his team to a 9-1 season with the only loss coming at the hands of eventual national champion Findlay. During his 12 seasons at St. Ambrose, Sturdy coached 64 first-team all-conference players and 28 All-Americans. His players rewrote the offensive school records in virtually every category.
Sturdy began coaching football in 1990 as a graduate assistant for St. Ambrose University while student teaching at Assumption High School.
As a player, Sturdy was a quarterback for St. Ambrose University from 1987-90, earning his bachelor's degree in history education in 1990. In 1988 he was named the team's MVP, and as team captain in 1989, he received the coach's appreciation award.
Sturdy attended Tipton High School, where he played four sports and accumulated 14 varsity letters. He was named all-state as a quarterback and started at quarterback for the South team in the 1986 Shrine Bowl.
Sturdy and his wife Gina are the parents of Keegan, Carson, and Kenzington.
"I am extremely excited for this opportunity to lead a football program again! I am proud to be joining an athletic department that has a tradition of excellence. Todd Garrett has set a great vision for MNU athletics and I am eager to get started building a program that the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community can be proud of!"
