TIPTON — The 54th Tiger Relays last week could have quite possibly been the coldest in recent memory. The Tiger boy’s track program hosted their annual showcase of track talent on Thursday, April 6. There, 13 teams battled in what was the first outdoor meet for many of the teams. Tipton was competing in their second meet of the season after opening their 2018 outdoor season the Thursday before in Cascade.
Tipton had five individual even finishes place in the top-10 led by Quinten Mesick. Mesick won the 400-meter dash at the meet. Mesick cruised to the win in a time of 52.72. Mesick added a 4th place nish in the 200-meter dash in 24.21. Ben Ellis placed third in the 3,200-meter run in 10:44.61 while Frank Bierman placed 5th in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.90 and Caleb Shu- maker placed 8th in the 1,600-meter run in 4:59.78. Noah Jedlicka just missed out on a top-10 nish, placing 11th in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:06.71.
In relay events, Tipton had their second-best finish, with a runner-finish in the shuttle hurdle relay event. The team of Paden Zell, Andrew Stewart, Payten Elijah and Frank Bierman were runners-up in a time of 1:05.34. The Tigers also had a top-10 finish in the 4X400-meter relay with the team of Blaise Thumma, Bryce Deerberg, Brandon Hines and Mesick in a time of 3:43.79. In field events, Tipton had two top-5 finishes. Andrew Stewart placed 3rd in the high jump with a best jump of 6-feet, no inches. Also, senior Quinten Mesick placed fourth in the long jump with a best jump of 18-feet, 9-inches. Nile Schuett claimed the top Tipton finish in the discus with a best throw of 96-3.5 and Mitch McMurrin had the best THS finish in the shot put with a best throw of 34-06.
The Tigers will be back on the track this week starting on Tuesday, April 10 when they travel to DeWitt Tuesday night, Monticello Thursday evening, April 12 and at Anamosa on Saturday, April 14. The Tigers meet at Anamosa Saturday in an addition to the schedule to make-up for an earlier meet being canceled due to the spring weather.
Knights Place 6th In Team Race At Tiger Relays
TIPTON — The North Cedar Knights finally got their outdoor season underway last week, at the Tiger Relays in Tipton. Wacky spring weather caused the delay to the start. North Cedar placed 6th in their first outdoor meet of 2018. The Knights scored 49 points. Lisbon won the meet with 81 points and CPU was second with 80 points and Mount Vernon was third with 73.
North Cedar’s Caden Wendt won the only event for the Knights at the meet. Wendt won the shot put with a best throw of 46-feet, 10.5 inches. In other events, North Cedar had three runner-up finishes and had three events with two, top-10 finishers. Treat Spahr collected runner-up finishes in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.40 and the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.39. Greg Hansen claimed the other runner-up finish. Hansen was second in the 200-meter dash in 23.86. Ethan Sahr placed 9th in the 400-meter hurdles and 10th in the 110-meter high hurdles giving North Cedar two, top-10 finishers. Miles McCullough placed 8th in the 200-meter dash in 25.04 to give the Knights their third event with two top-10 North Cedar nish- ers. Seamus Raney was also a top-10 placewinner with a 10th place finish in the 400-meter dash in 58.03.
In relay events, North Cedar’s best relay nish came from their shuttle hurdle relay team. The team of Treat Spahr, Miles McCullough, Dragon Cinkovich and Ethan Sahr placed fourth in a time of 1:06.08. North Cedar had two other relays n- ish at or near the top-5 in their respective event. The Knights sprint medley relay team of Sahr, McCullough, Greg Han- sen and Seamus Raney placed 5th in 1:41.11. North Cedar added a sixth place nish in the 4X400-meter relay with the team of Hansen, Spahr, Mc- Cullough and Raney in a time of 3:43.48.
In field events, North Cedar was led by a runner-up finish by Owen Meyer in the discus. Meyer, who only competed in one eld event at the meet, let his best throw of 141-feet, 7.5 inches y to the runner- up finish. Brady Lehrman placed 14th in the shot put to lead two North Cedar throwers. Lehrman placed 14th with a best throw of 38-feet, 3 inches. Evan Patterson gave the Knights their best finish in the long jump at the meet with a best jump of 14-9.75.
