IOWA CITY — Former University of Iowa defensive lineman Derreck Robinson will serve as honorary captain Saturday night when Iowa hosts Michigan at Kinnick Stadium (7:15 p.m., ABC).
Robinson is a native of
Minneapolis, Minnesota. He lettered for the Hawkeyes in from 2001-04.
He earned Iowa’s Coaches Appreciation Award for defense as a senior and
was selected to compete in the East-West Shrine game.
Robinson started all 12 games
at defensive end in 2004 as the Hawkeyes earned a share of the Big Ten
title and defeated LSU in the 2005 Capital One Bowl. He tied for fifth
in the conference in fumble recoveries. Robinson had a career-best
nine tackles in a 33-6 win over Ohio State and six tackles in a 30-7
win over Wisconsin that earned the Hawkeyes a Big Ten championship.
After a redshirt season in
2000, Robinson competed for the Hawkeyes during one of the most
successful periods of Iowa football. Iowa posted a 38-12 record during
his career, sharing the Big Ten title in both 2002 and 2004. The
Hawkeyes
competed in four bowl games during that span, including winning the
2001 Alamo Bowl, the 2004 Outback Bowl and the 2005 Capital One Bowl.
Robinson completed his career
with 76 tackles, including 16 tackles for loss and four sacks. He
forced two fumbles and recovered two fumbles.
Robinson signed a free agent
contract with San Diego following the 2005 NFL Draft and played in the
NFL through the 2010 season. After two seasons in San Diego, Robinson
also played for Miami (2007), and Cleveland (2009-2010). He saw action
in 14 games for the Browns in his final year.
