Harlan’s Angie Spangenberg is the 2016 volleyball recipient of the Golden Plaque of Distinction. Angie will be honored before the start of the Class 4A championship match Friday, November 11.
The Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession.
Spangenberg has been coaching volleyball for 24 years. She began her career at Red Oak, guiding the Tigers to nine state tournaments, and just completed her sixth season at Harlan. Since her arrival at Harlan, Spangenberg led the Cyclones to five state tournament trips, winning two state crowns with one runner-up finish. Two of her Red Oak squads were state runners-up in 1997 and 1998.
Spangenberg is a three-time Iowa Volleyball Coach of the Year and an eight-time District Coach of the Year. The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honored Spangenberg as its National Coach of the Year in 2014 while the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) named her as the State Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2015. She has served on the IGHSAU Volleyball Advisory Committee and was a member of the NFHS national rules committee from 2001 to 2004. She currently serves on the IGHSAU Volleyball Hall of Fame jury.
Angie and husband, Randy, are the parents of two sons, Jared and Brock and one daughter Paige. The couple also have five grandchildren, Jacob, Brett, Kate, Zac and Jack. Angie currently serves as the Dean of Students at Harlan Community Middle School.
