MUSCATINE — The Wilton Beaver girl’s golf team broke a three-year run by River Valley Conference North teams to win the conference title, to claim the 2017 RVC team title last week in Muscatine. In fact, the top-4 teams atop the 13-member league were South members, also a first in the league’s brief 4-year history.
Wilton held off Tipton by two strokes to claim the team title. Wilton scored 194 to the Tigers 196. The Tigers scored their highest team finish at a RVC conference meet. The Tigers have finished 5th in each of the previous two years and 10th in 2014. Wilton had steadily improved each season with a 9th place finish in 2014, 7th in 2015 and 4th last season.
The meet started on time, but lightning forced the players off the course early in the match and into a nearly two-hour delay. It was decided by league coaches to play nine holes due to the possible incoming weather that would impact the match if they tried to continue with 18 holes.
Wilton’s Alyssa Anderson and Tess Kerkhof each shot scores of 46 and were two of five RVC golfers to do so. Camanche’s Callie Walker and Northeast Goose Lake’s Megan Crockett shared the medalist honors. Anderson and Kerkhof were on the All-RVC Elite team with Ellie Vanlandshoot from Iowa City Regina, Tipton’s Mara Jauron and Lauren Ries from Monticello. Anderson, Kerkhof and Vanlandshoot shot 46’s while Jauron and Ries shot scores of 47.
Tipton senior Mara Jauron shot a season best 47 to earn Elite All-conference honors as one of the top scores at the meet.
Kailee Meyer and Brittany Huinker each earned first team all-conference honors with scores of 49 and Addy Duwe scored a 51 to earn honorable mention honors. Rylee Conrad was close to earning all-conference honors after shooting a score of 53. Four of the five Tiger golfers were all-conference honorees and all five were within six strokes of each other.
Other Wilton scores were Eleney Owens 50 and Taylor Garvin 52. Owens earned honorable mention all-conference honors.
North Cedar and Durant each had a representative on the all-conference team. Susan Graves shot a score of 51 to earn honorable mention honors for Durant. Maddie Cornelius shot a score of 48 to earn first team all-conference honors.
Other players earning all-conference honors were Macy Akers (West Liberty) 48, Paige Deppe (Bellevue) 48 and Rose Strang (Cascade) 48.
Other honorable mention all-conference players were Aly Jones (West Liberty) 50, Aleah Rocha (West Branch) 51 and Sydney Lamont (West Branch) 51.
