WAPELLO — The Tipton Tigers are one step from the state golf tournament after winning the Wapello golf sectional Monday. The Tigers won the meet by 11 strokes and had three players in the top-5 scores to lead the way. Joining them at next Monday’s district meet in Jesup will be fellow RVC South foe Wilton. The top-2 teams at this year’s RVC meet will have a shot at the state meet having to navigate another 18-hole meet. The Beavers played at the Jesup course last season at the district meet, but did not advance to state. Tipton scored 390 team points and the Beavers scored 401.
The strength of the River Valley Conference showed at the meet with the top three teams from the RVC. After Tipton and Wilton, West Branch placed third in the team race with 418 points. The Bears were led by Claire Bridges with a 101 (55-46) and Aleah Rocha (51-52) and Syndey Lamont (53-50) each with scores of 103. Durant also was at the meet and placed 6th with a team score of 454.
A trio of Tigers qualified for the district meet as individuals. They were Kailee Meyer, Addy Duwe and Brittany Huinker who all shot under 100 for the 18-hole meet.
Meyer dropped 11 strokes from her front nine score of 53 to her back nine score of 42 for a total of 95. Duwe shot scores of 47 and 49 for a total of 96 and Huinker dropped three strokes off her front nine score of 51 to shoot a 48 on the back nine for a total score of 99.
Tipton’s other two scorers were right behind the top three scores. All of Tipton’s scores were within six shots of Meyer’s team leading 95. Mara Jauron shot an 18-hole score of 100, dropping eight strokes from her front nine score of 54 to 46 and Rylee Conrad shot scores of 49 and 52 for an overall score of 101.
Wilton’s Alyssa Anderson was the medalist at the meet with a score of 89. Anderson shot a 44 on the first nine and a 45 on the second nine. Beaver freshman Taylor Garvin was second with a score of 98, lowering her score from 53 on the front nine to 45 on the back nine.
Other Wilton scores were Tess Kerkhof (52-54) 106, Eleney Owens (56-52) 108, Annabel Grings (58-59) 117 and Riley Hamman (65-58) 123.
Durant’s Paige McKee advanced to next week’s district meet as an individual quailfier. McKee had the fourth best individual score after Anderson’s medalist total, with a score of 99. She shot a 49 on the front nine and a 50 on the back nine holes. The other five Durant scorers all dropped strokes from their front nine score to their back nine score. Wildcat scores were Susan Graves 59-56 115, Kenzie Paper 60-58 118, Ellie Olsen 62-61 123, Sierra Gregoire 76-63 139 and Aubrin Dittmer 72-69 141.
The district meet will be at the Jesup Golf and Country Club in Jesup, Iowa. Region 4 teams that will be at the meet will be Sumner-Fredericksburg and Jesup. Sumner-Fredericksburg won Region 4 with a team score of 389 while Jesup was second with a 414. Clayton Ridge was third at the Region 4 sectional with a score of 430. Iowa City Regina, North Cedar and Bellevue also competed at the sectional hosted by Wapsie Valley in Fairbank, Iowa.
