Area athletes get first look at new Drake Track

DES MOINES — The North Cedar girl’s track team sent five events to the 2017 Drake Relays and some area athletes from Tipton and Wilton joined them to get their first look at the new Blue Oval that is at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines.  Rain and cool temps marked the annual premier track and field event in Des Moines.  Thursday was the only day that it did not rain and despite temps in the 40’s, wind and steady rain in the three-day track event, 36,220 people filed into the stadium for the event.
Locally, there were many highlights at the meet.  Every school was represented in some way.  Tipon and North Cedar sent girl’s events, North Cedar and WIlton sent boy’s events and Durant was represented by three former Wildcats, now competing at the collegiate level.

Knights Shine In Three Relays
The North Cedar girl’s track team sent three relay events to the 2017 Drake Relays.  The relays there were the 4X100, 4X400 and the sprint medley relay teams.
North Cedar’s best relay finish came from its 4X400-meter relay team of Martha Jesuit, Cassie Cox, Tessa Fields and Grace Proesch.  That team placed 11th in a time of 4:03.85.
The Knights placed fourth in their heat.  Waukee won the heat followed by Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, North Cedar, Johnston, Pella, Independence and Linn-Mar.  Waukee finished 3rd, Cedar Falls 4th, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 7th and North Cedar 11th, giving the first heat of the event four teams basically in the top-10 finishers in the event.
North Cedar currently is the top RVC 4X400-meter relay team with a time of 4:03.17 and top team in class 2A.  Monticello is second to the Knights in each category.  The Knights are ranked 10th in all classes in the event.
North Cedar placed 16th in the sprint medley relay in a time of 1:52.00 with the team of Brittyn Wilhau, Martha Jesuit, Cassie Cox and Grace Proesch.  The Knights are currently tops in class 2A in the event with a time of 1:51.66 with Monticello and Cascade close behind.  The same order holds true for the standings in the event in the RVC.  Linn-Mar won the event in a time of 1:46.16 followed by Davenport Assumption (1:46.63) and Waukee (1:48.10).  The Knights were the only River Valley Conference school in the event.
In the 4X100, North Cedar placed 64th out of 80 with the team of Brittyn Wilhau, Darby Hawtrey, Kiarra Musser and Lexi Crist in a time of 52.75.  Waterloo East won the prelim with a time of 48.92 followed by Dubuque Wahlert (48.99), Waukee (49.28), Davenport Assumption (49.31), Ankeny (49.31), Pleasant Valley (49.57), Benton (49.60) and Pella (49.69) in qualifying for the finals.  The Knights are currently second in the RVC in the event behind Cascade with a time of 51.83.  Cascade placed 17th in the event in 50.54.

Kofron, Sander Compete In Throwing Events
Two of the top throwers in the River Valley Conference competed in the shot put event last Friday morning and one also competed in the discus event.  Tipton sophomore Jamie Kofron and North Cedar’s Nicole Sander competed in the shot put.
Kofron placed 20th in the discus with a best throw of 106-feet, 6-inches.  That distance came on her second throw.  Her first throw was 100-feet, 4-inches.  She fouled on her third throw.
Kofron placed 22nd in the shot put with a best throw of 35-feet, 6.75-inches for the class 2A runner-up at last year’s state meet.  At state last year, Kofron battled to throwers that are now throwing in college in Kiana Phelps from Kingsley-Pierson (Oregon) and Brinn Grunder from Durant (Upper Iowa).  That throw came on the first of three throws for Kofron.  She did not have another recorded throw, fouling on both remaining throws.
Kofron is second in the River Valley Conference in the shot put and tops in the RVC in the discus event.  She has battled Camanche senior Courtney Schnoor for the top spots all season.  Schnoor, also at Drake in both events, placed 21st in the discus (103-08) and 11th in the shot put (38-0).  Kofron is in the top-5 in class 2A in both events.  She has the third best shot put throw (41-07.5) and the fifth best discus throw (124-02.5) this season.
Sander placed 24th in the shot put with a best throw of 35-feet, 5.75-inches.  That throw came on her second of three throws.  She had an opening throw of 34-feet, 8.75-inches and a third throw of 34-feet, 1.5-inches.  She is currently holds the third best throw in the event in the River Valley Conference with a throw of 39-feet, 3.50-inches.  Though she did not qualify for the Drake Relays in the discus, she also has the third best discus throw in the conference at 110-feet, 3-inches.

Hawtrey 16th In High Jump
North Cedar junior Darby Hawtrey placed 16th in the high jump event last Friday.  Weather forced the event indoors at the adjacent field house.  There, the field adjusted to the new environment well.
North Polk junior Maria Gorham won the event with a best jump of 5-feet, 7-inches.  Green County junior Megan Durbin was second with a best jump of 5-feet, 6-inches and Solon’s Josie Durr was third with a best jump of 5-feet, 6-inches.  Hawtrey jumped 5-feet, 0-inches at the event.  Durbin was the class 3A champion last year in the high jump and Durr was 4th at state last year.  Hawtrey was the second class 2A leader among the top-5 in the class to finish in the event.  Sydney Durbin from OA-BGIG was 5th at Drake and is tied for the top best jump (5-6) in 2A.  Hawtrey has jumped 5-5 this season and is tied for second.

Reifert Reaches Finals Of High Jump
Wilton senior Evan Reifert reached the finals of the long jump event on Friday afternoon.  Reifert came into the Drake Relays with the second best jump in class 2A with a best jump of 22-feet, .75-inches.  Michael Santi from Madrid is the leader, but by less than six inches.
Drake was in the first flight of jumpers at Drake.  In his heat were Seniors: Brett Daley (Treynor), Marc Mbofung (Ames), Santi (Madrid), Marty Borseth (CR Prairie) and Eli Barrett (Denver); juniors Nick Foss (Harlan), Terrell Jordan Jr. (CR Kennedy) and Miles Rupiper (Carroll Kuemper); and sophomores Danny McDermott (Dubuque Wahlert) and Damon Jaeger (Western Dubuque).
In the field, the 1A and 2A winners of the event at last year’s state meet were not in the field as one graduated and one did not qualify for the Relays.  Rupiper was the highest 2A state placewinner from last spring’s state meet where he placed third, in the Relays.
Reifert had the third best jump in the prelims with a best jump of 20-feet, 8.75 inches, enough to place him in the finals.  His other prelim jumps were 19-6 and 20-3.50.
In the finals, Reifert did not get close to his first jump.  Reifert jumped 19-feet, 5.50-inches in the middle of two fouls on his other jumps.  He placed 9th in the event.  Three from his heat, the first one, were in the top-10 including event winner Nick Foss, a junior from Harlan, who recorded his best jump on his first try in a distance of 21-feet, 6.25 inches.  Kevin Kurth from Davenport Central was second with a best jump of 21-6.  Terrell Jordan Jr. from Cedar Rapids Kennedy was fourth and the second best jump out of Reifert’s section.

North Cedar Boy’s Relay Team Returns Disappointed
It was a disappointing day for the North Cedar boy’s 4X100-meter relay team of Jacob Jensen, Bryce Bemer, Ethan Sahr and Greg Hansen.  The quartet qualified for the Drake Relays joining few Knight events over the years in accomplishing that.
The Knights were in heat 6, lane 3 of the prelims.  Iowa Falls-Alden won the heat with a time of 44.42, Newton was second in 44.74, Gilbert was third in 44.86, Williamsburg was fourth in 45.11, Mount Pleasant was fifth in 45.19, Davenport Central was 6th in 45.36 and Davenport West was 7th in the heat in 46.55.
The Knights are second in the River Valley Conference heading into this week’s conference meet in Bellevue with a time of 44.69 behind Camanche (44.67).
Western Dubuque won the prelims with a time of 42.62 followed by West Burlington (43.08), Davenport North (43.11), Ames (43.26), Johnston (43.30), Urbandale (43.30), Dallas Center-Grimes (43.33) and Waukee (43.35) in the finals.
Lisbon placed 22nd in 44.32, Anamosa placed 29th in 44.54, West Liberty placed 36th in 44.87, Monticello placed 61st in 45.48.
North Cedar was not the only team to not finish the race.  Mediapolis, Oskaloosa, Pleasant Valley and West Des Moines Valley all had relay teams not finish their heat.  Ankeny Centennial, Bettendorf, Cedar Falls, Des Moines Roosevelt, Linn-Mar and Waterloo West all had their teams disqualified.
