Of the automatic qualifiers, Tipton Caleb Shumaker captured the only event win. Shumaker ran to a winning time of 4:40.86. The second place time was 4:48.44. Three THS events were runners-up and thus automatic qualifiers as well. Quinten Mesick was the runner-up in the long jump with a best jump of 20-10.50 to qualify for state. Frank Bierman also qualified for state and was the runner-up in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.77 and the Tigers 4X800-meter relay team placed second. The team of Shumaker, Bryce Deerberg, Trent Pelzer and Corey Wallick qualified for state by running to a second-place time of 8:21.74.
Mesick will jump at 2 on Thursday while Shumaker will run on Saturday at 2:22. The Tigers 4X800-meter relay team will run on Thursday at 5:50.
Tipton had four other events qualify for the state meet as next best 8-times statewide. Andrew Stewart placed 3rd in the high jump with a best jump of 6-feet, 0-inches. Mesick qualified in the open 400 after placing 3rd in the event in a time of 52.46. Ben Ellis also qualified as an individual with a 5th place finish in the 3,200-meter run in 10:27.72.
Tipton’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Paden Zell, Davis Butler, Payten Elijah, and Frank Bierman advanced to state after narrowly missing out on the runner-up spot. The relay team placed third in a time of 1:00.95.
Tipton had a handful of other top-10 finishers. John Stroup had a pair of top-10 finishes with a 9th place finish in the 100-meter dash and a 10th place finish in the 200-meter dash. Trent Pelzer was 5th in the 800-meter run and Frank Bierman was 7th in the 400-meter hurdles. Andrew Olseen placed 6th in the 3,200-meter run.
Five other Tipton relay events placed in the top-10. The Tigers sprint medley team placed 6th and their 4X400-meter relay team placed 7th. Tipton had 8th place finishes in the 4x100-meter relay and the 4X200-meter relay. Tipton also had a top-10 finish from their distance medley relay team that placed 9th.
West Liberty won the meet with a team-best 111 team points. The Comets had to hold off Northeast who placed second. The Rebels scored 110 team points. Bellevue placed third with 93 team points. The Tigers scored 81 team points at the meet and placed fourth in the team scores.
