TIPTON — For the first time in the five-year history of the River Valley Conference, the Tipton boy’s track team has placed in the top-5 of the team standings at the conference meet. Last Friday, the Tigers claimed 5th place out of 13 scoring member schools. The Tigers scored 64 team points. Both were new high marks by a Tipton boys team at an RVC meet. The Tigers came to the meet with three ninth-place finishes in four seasons. The other finish was an 11th place finish in 2016. The Tigers also claimed their first River Valley Conference champion in three years. Senior Quinten Mesick won the long jump. The last THS RVC champ came in the 2015 season was two, Eric Lenz in the 1,600-meter run and the Tigers sprint medley relay.

Mid-Prairie ended the four-year reign of RVC North Schools claiming the boys track and field title. The Golden Hawks scored 123 team points to capture the title. The Golden Hawks were runners-up last season and fourth in 2016. Monticello owns two RVC titles with Bellevue and Monticello having the others before this year.

Quinten Mesick scored 19 points for the Tigers. Ten of them came by winning the long jump. Mesick had the best jump of 20-feet, 4-inches. Mesick added eight points with a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash. Mesick was second to Mid-Prairie’s Cary Schaefer with a time of 51.59 to Schaefer’s time of 50.89. It was a repeat of their epic 400-meter indoor chase at the RVC indoor meet in which Mesick edged Schaefer for the win at the University of Dubuque earlier this spring.

In individual distance events, Caleb Schumaker had a runner-up finish in the 1,600-meter run. Shumaker ran to a time of 4:44.66. Ben Ellis placed 6th in the 3,200-meter run in 10:35.94. In hurdles, Frank Bierman and Paden Zell were 4th and 5th respectively in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.29 and 16.34.

In relay events, Tipton had three, top-5 finishes. The Tigers shuttle hurdle relay team of Paden Zell, Davis Butler, Payten Elijah, and Frank Bierman were runners-up with a time of 1:01.71. The Tigers 4X800-meter relay team of Bryce Deerberg, Shumaker, Trent Pelzer, and Corey Wallick placed 3rd in 8:31.91. That time was a new season best for the team. The Tigers 4X400-meter relay team of Deerberg, Noah Jedlicka, Wallick and Mesick placed 5th in a time of 3:34.92. That time was a new season best.

In field events, Tipton’s best finish came from Mesick in winning the long jump. Andrew Stewart placed 6th in the high jump with a best jump of 5-10.
