Wendel Pitches Perfect Game Against Eagles

WYOMING — What a way to get a win. The Tipton softball team got their first win of the 2018 season and matched their 2017 win total all in one night. Last Friday, the Tigers got a pitching gem from sophomore Morgan Wendel in a 12-0, three-inning road win at Midland. Wendel, pitched a perfect game in the win. The Tigers improved to 1-2 with the victory.

Wendel faced the minimum nine batters in the game and struck out five of the nine batters she faced. Midland had three groundouts, two to shortstop, and the other to first base. Midland led off the bottom of the second inning with a fly out.

The victory was a big boost for the Tigers and for Wendel. The Tigers were outscored 30 to 4 in a doubleheader, season-opening loss to Wilton earlier in the week. Wendel had a rough night against the Beavers but had no problems with the Eagles in getting the win.

Offensively, Tipton collected nine hits in the game with two players having multi-hit games and six players in all with at least one hit in the game. Ashley Mente was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI’s and two runs scored. Alley Ryan was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Other Tiger hits came from Laken Hermiston, Hailey Stewart, Grace Nichols, and Kamryn Chapman.

Nichols and Chapman each drove in two runs while Hermiston, Bryanna Simmermaker and Keelie Claussen each had one RBI.

Tipton scored four runs in the top of the first and set the tone for the game. Laken Hermiston led off the game with a single, one of three first-inning hits for the Tigers. Four straight Tipton batters reached base with Ryan, Mente, Simmermaker, and Nichols reaching base. Nichols, Claussen, and Chapman had RBI’s in the inning. Chapman had a 2-run double to cap the first inning scoring.

Tipton followed the first inning outburst with a 5-run second inning. Hailey Stewart started the rally in the second inning with a one-out double. That started a run of five straight Tigers that reached base.

The Tigers then added three runs in the top of the third to get the score to 12-0.
