Locals participate in Iowa Shrine Bowl

CEDAR FALLS — The South squad at the 2019 Iowa Shrine Bowl had a lot of familiar
faces this past Saturday in the annual high school football all-star game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Wilton head football coach was one of the assistant coaches on the South coaching sta . Wilton’s head coach helped lead the Beavers to the 2018 Class 1A playo s. The South squad beat the North squad by a score of 24- 13. West Branch head coach Butch Pedersen was the head coach for the South squad.

The South took a 7-0 lead in the rst quarter when Beau Cornwell from West Branch connected with Durant’s Mason Compton for a 41-yard touchdown pass. After a Na- than DeBruin, Pella Christian, PAT, the score was 7-0. The South would add two second-quarter touchdowns to take a 17-0 halftime lead. The South extended their lead to 24-0 in the third quarter on a Landon Green, Iowa City West, fumble recovery in the end zone. The North tried to make things interesting in the nal quarter scoring all 13 points in the nal frame to set the score at 24-13 and avoid getting shutout.

Compton was a first-team Class A All-State receiver. He will attend Drake University this fall and continue playing football. Durant was 7-3 last year and were district champions. Compton caught 50 passes for 996 yards and 12 touchdowns. Those numbers were near the top in all classes. Defensively, he had 47 tackles. Compton was also dangerous in the return game. Compton returned both punts and kick- o s. Compton had 199 yards in kick-o returns and a touch- down and had 178 punt return yards and a touchdown.

Mays was a third-team All-State selection in Class 1A. Mays passed for 1,271 yards on 106 completions with 16 touch- down passes to ve interceptions. He rushed for 660 yards and 11 touchdowns. Defen- sively, he had 33 tackles, four tackles for loss, and one-interception which he returned for a 50-yard touchdown return.
