FORT DODGE — The Tipton Boy’s cross-country team claimed their second straight Class 2A state title last Saturday in Fort Dodge overcoming great odds. The Tigers held o Des Moines Christian by only four points to capture the school’s third state title in boy’s cross country. The other titles came in 1975 and last year. Two Tiger runners, junior Caleb Shumaker and senior Jackson Edens captured All-State honors while senior Andrew Olseen also placed in the top-20 finishers. The Tigers joined Madrid in Class 1A as the only schools in the four classes at state to repeat as state champions this year. In all classes, Tipton had the second lowest score by the four state champions this year. They were Class 1A Madrid 74, Class 2A Tipton 78, Class 3A Dallas Center Grimes 109, and Class 4A Dowling Catholic 87 points.
Coming into the state meet, the Tigers were not at full strength as senior Trent Pelzer was hobbled with an injury, but gave it a go at the meet. With Pelzer not 100-percent, the rest of the Tigers had to step up to make up the time. Just like the final conclusion to the movie McFarland USA, someone had to step up. For Tipton, that came in the trio of seniors Andrew Olseen and Landan Hill and sophomore A.J. Thumma.
Olseen placed 17th overall and 10th in the scoring determining team scores which was big for THS. His time was 17:01. Olseen came into the state meet off of three straight top-10 finishes at the Tigers last regular season meet at North Linn, the RVC meet, and the state qualifying meet. At one point at
the beginning of October he was beaten out on varsity and was running for the Tiger JV team. Instead of sulking or even quitting Olseen rallied, and pushed through, regaining his spot on the varsity team and running his best times of the season. Hill turned in his best time of the season at state, finishing 24th in 17:28 as did Thumma with a 34th place finish in 17:42, a season best time. Tipton finished off their scoring with Cody Bolhmann placing 41st in a time of 17:52 and Pelzer finished in 64th in a time of 18:16, gutting out the race with an injury in his final high school race.
A year ago the Tigers claimed their rst state title in boy’s cross-country for the rst time since 1975, scoring 72 points, beating RVC foe Bellevue by 28 points. The Comets placed a distant second with 100 points. This season, the final team race score was much closer. Tipton won the meet with nearly the same points, 78, but the second-place team was the second ranked Des Moines Christian who scored 82 points. Camanche’s Dylan Darsidan won the individual race with a first-place finish in a time of 16:02. Bellevue’s Brady Griebel was the runner-up with a time of 16:02.8. Tipton’s Caleb Shumaker placed third overall in a time of 16:11. The trio of juniors have been battling for the top-3 spots in both races and in the individual rankings by the Iowa Track and Field Coaches Association. Coming into state, Shumaker was ranked No. 1, Griebel No. 2, and Darsidan No. 3. Shumaker won races the last two times out at the River Valley Conference meet and the state qualifying meet at North Fayette Valley.
Shumaker placed 20th as a freshman in a time of 17:06. Both he and 2019 senior Ben Ellis earned All-State honors at last year’s state meet. Shumaker placed 4th last year and Ellis placed 11th to both earn All-State honors last year. The Tigers collected to spots among the top-15 All-State spots this
year. Shumaker, who was third in 16:11, and senior Jackson Edens who placed 14th in 16:53. Shumaker’s time was his second best time this season on any of the 12 courses Tipton ran at this year. Edens ran at the 2018 state meet placing 18th in 17:03, nearly missing All-State honors when he was a student at Green Mountain-Garwin schools. Edens and his family moved to Tipton after the 2018-19 school year.
Last year, the Tigers paid tribute to the 1975 Tipton team that won the state title with black uniforms. This year, the Tigers sported new old gold uniforms with the Tigers logo emblazoned on the front. The Tigers of 1975 were led by Brett Eggert and Joe Pelzer who gave the Tigers a 1-2 punch and the duo finished in that order at the Class B state meet that year. The Tigers were members of the WaMac conference then and captured the conference title as well that season. Their coach was Hall of Famer Dave Vogelgesang. Other team members were Mark Wiskus, Tom Weih and Ed Pelzer. In a future time, it will be likely that current head coach Eric Walsh will be a strong Hall of Fame candidate and this group, will long be remembered.
The Tigers will lose over half of their starting roster next year. Gone will be seniors Jackson Edens, Andrew Olsee, Landan Hill and Trent Pelzer. Back for THS next year will be Caleb Shumaker, A.J. Thumma and Cody Bohlmann out of the lineup that ran at state. Shumaker and Bohlmann will return with two state titles under their belts while Thumma will have one.
