Tigers sidelined in Region 7 Final

VAN HORNE - The Tipton volleyball team saw their season end Monday night, November 4 in the Region 7 Final at Benton Community High School. There, the No. 10 ranked Nevada Cubs upset the No. 8 Tigers 3-sets-to-1, to advance to the 2019 Class 3A state tournament. The Tigers end the season 32-7. Nevada got the No. 6 seed after improving to 33-6 at the state tournament. The Cubs begin their state-run on Wednesday, November 13. They will play the No. 3 seed, Red Oak. The winner of that quarterfinal match will play the winner of the other semifinal match between No. 2 seeded Carroll Kuemper and No. 7 Unity Christian. The top half of the bracket has quarterfinal matches between Davenport Assumption against Union and West Liberty against Mount Vernon.

Nevada came into the match on a hot streak, having won 17 of their last 18 matches after a loss at the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational. The Cubs won an amazing 45 of 48 sets in the run.

Tipton fell behind the Cubs 2-0 after losing the first set 25-18 and the second set 25-9. Tipton fought back, winning the third set 25-22 to cut the Cubs lead to 2-1. Nevada withstood a Tip- ton charge in the fourth set before claiming the match with a 25-16 win.

The Tigers took an 8-1 lead to start the match in the first set. Nevada adjusted, outscoring the Tigers 24-10 the rest of the set to take the opener 25-18. The Cubs did everything right in the second set, and the Tigers could get nothing right to go their way. The Cubs led 14-2 at one point before taking the second set 25-9 and a commanding 2-0 match lead. The Tigers found momentum and took the third set to cut the Cubs lead to 2-1 after winning the third set 25-22. The momentum continued into the fourth set as THS took a 5-2 lead, but Nevada came back to take the third set 25-16 and close the match. The Cubs took the wind out of the Tigers sails after clinging to a 15-12 lead, Nevada went on a 5-0 run to increase the lead to 20-12. The Tigers trailed by ten points, 23-13 before making a mini-run with four straight points to set the score at 23-17, but the Tigers could get no closer.

Tipton had 38 kills in the match with only one player reaching double digits. Kamryn Chapman had 10 kills and Sommer Daniel had nine. Daniel had 24 assists and 12 digs and served 17-for-18 for the Tigers. Karlee Kamberling had 18 digs and Bailey Schmidt served 18-for-19 with two aces. As a team, Tipton served 60-for-68 with four aces.

Kacie Rewerts had 20 kills to lead three Cub players in double digits. The Cubs had 50 team kills. Sydney Mosinski and Hannah Thomsen had 11 and 10 kills. Morgan Tupper had 30 assists, 12 digs and served 12-for-13. Nevada served 86-for- 93 with four aces in the match. Aubrey Gibson led going 19-for-20 with an ace serve.

Tipton will say goodbye to a senior class of ve. Graduating o this year’s team are Karlee Kam- berling, Sommer Daniel, Bailey Schmidt, Grace Nichols, and Kamryn Chapman. The quartet was a part of 71 wins the last two years, conference titles, and two trips to the state tournament.
