MARSHALLTOWN — Tipton junior Maddie Swick became the first Tipton individual swimmer to compete at the Iowa Girls state swimming meet since 2008 last Satur- day. Swick, the current school record holder in the event, qualified out of the Linn-Mar Regional meet. Swick set the school record at 1:00.81. At state, Swick would finish 31st in the state in a time of 1:01.77. It was the second straight meet that Swick broke 1:02, after setting her season best time at home in a dual with Fair eld on October 21.
Swick swam Friday, November 8 in the preliminary round of swims at the state meet. Also swimming events that night were the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard Individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle, the 100- yard freestyle, the 500-yard freestyle, the 100-yard backstroke, and the 100-yard breaststroke. Swick was in the rst heat of prelims. In her heat, Maci Greenley from Bettendorf won it in a time of 1:00.50 to place 23rd overall in the event.
At the Regional qualifying meet, her time nearly got her to state reaching the automatic qualifying standard time of 59.90 as her time was almost a second behind. However, Swick earned a spot at state for having the next fastest time statewide in the event. That time set a new Tipton school record in the event. The previous record was set in 2007 by Alex Proctor in a time of 1:01.61. The time also set Swick’s time in the event as a new season-best. Her previous best time this season was 1:03.25.
Swick’s time would have won her a state title in 1971-1975. During those years the state champion had a time of 1:02.0 or greater. Since 1976, there have been only two champions with a time slower than 1:00. Iowa City West sophomore Scarlet Martin denied Dowling Catholic senior Berit Quass a three-peat, winning the state title in 53.41. Quass won the state title in 2017 in 54.38 and last year in 54.16. This year she was second in 54.71. She would have joined only two others with three titles in the history of state swimming, Emma Sougstad from Mason City and Georganne Peterseon from Glenwood.
