LOWDEN — The North Cedar baseball team played three straight nights last week leading up to the July 4th holiday. The Knights only home game proved to be their only win in their three-game stretch that went from Wednesday, July 1-Friday, July 3. There, the Knights beat the Bellevue Comets 7-3. The win was their third of the season. The Knights played two other RIver Valley Conference foes in Camanche and Anamosa, both on the road.
Three-Run First Inning Helps Knights To Win Over Bellevue
LOWDEN — The Knights survived a three-error game in part to scoring runs early in their 7-3 win over Bellevue at home last Thursday, July 2. There, the Knights won their third game.
The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the first after the Comets opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. The Knight runs gave North Cedar a 3-1 lead, one they would not give up the rest of the game. The Knights extended their lead to 4-1 with a run in the second inning. That score stood until the top of the fifth. There, the Comets cut into the Knights lead with two runs to set the score at 4-3. North Cedar put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a four-run 7-3 lead.
North Cedar had seven hits in the game by seven different players. Jacob Wagner and Gage Walshire each had doubles in the game. Tyler Jackson, Brennen Kreel, Taden Lange, James Garner and Jaxon Sander had the other hits. Tyler Thurston, Walshire, Kreel and Garner each had RBI’s.
Tadan Lange was the winning pitcher for North Cedar. Lange went 4 ⅓ innings and gave up three runs on four hits. He struck out seven and walked three batters in the win. Chase Miller pitched 2 ⅔ innings in relief and slammed the door on a Comet comeback. Miller gave up only two hits and surrendered no runs in his innings of relief. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Indians Two-Hit Knights
CAMANCHE — The 2019 Camanche Indian baseball team had a deep postseason run, and after their game with North Cedar last week, the Indians look to be gearing up for another deep postseason run. The Knights traveled to Camanche last Wednesday, July 1 as the season is rapidly getting to its regular season conclusion.
There, the Knights had only two hits off of Indian starter Mitch McManus in a 6-0 loss. The game began a three-game week for North Cedar.
The game was close until the later portions of the game. Neither team scored a run through the first four innings. Camanche scored the first runs in the bottom of the fifth with a 3-run inning. The Indians matched that 3-run inning with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to set the score at its final of 6-0.
North Cedar’s hits came from Jacob Wagner and Ethan Sahr. Sahr started the game and took the loss after going 5 ⅔ innings. He gave up six runs on nine hits and struck out five batters.
Caleb Delzell led Camanche at the plate going 2-for-4 with a RBI. The Indians had two doubles in the game.
Knights End Week With Loss At Anamosa
ANAMOSA — The North Cedar baseball team went into the July 4th holiday with an 8-4 loss to set their record in three games last week at 1-2. The Knights will begin the last week of the regular season this upcoming week. North Cedar will begin postseason play on Saturday, July 11.
The Blue Raiders didn’t waste time getting on the scoreboard in the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning while roughing up Knight starter Cole Taylor. Taylor gave up four runs over the one-inning he pitched on two hits while he walked five batters. Taylor gave up three runs in the first and another run in the second inning before recording an out as Anamosa led 4-0 after two innings. Things got worse for the Knights in the bottom of the third when Anamosa put up another four runs to take control of the game, extending their lead to 8-0 after three innings.
North Cedar didn’t quit. The Knights pushed a run across the plate in the top of the fourth to trim the Raiders lead to 8-1. North Cedar held the Raiders scoreless from the fourth inning on, helping them regain their confidence. The Knights exploded for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to get the score to 8-4, but could get no closer.
North Cedar had five hits while Anamosa had seven. Tyler Jackson was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI’s and a run scored. Other North Cedar hits came from Jacob Wagner, Ehtan Sahr, and Taden Lange. Jackson also pitched two innings of relief in the game and Tyler Thurston threw three innings of relief in the game. Jaxon Sander had two RBI’s while Thurston and Lange each had one RBI in the game.
Regals Too Much For Knights In 10-0 Loss
IOWA CITY — The North Cedar baseball team fell behind early at Iowa City Regina on Monday,
June 29 and it led to a 10-0 loss in five innings. The Regals scored four runs in the first and three runs in each of the second and third innings to get their ten runs.
North Cedar had only two hits in the game, one each from Tyler Jackson and Ethan Sahr. The Knights left three runners on base. Cole Taylor took the loss after starting and working two innings. He gave up nine runs on five hits and struck out one batter. He also walked five. Chase Miller pitched two innings in relief and gave up one run on four hits and struck out one.
Knights To Begin Postseason Saturday Afternoon
LOWDEN — The postseason begins this weekend for the North Cedar baseball team. The North Cedar Knights will play Midland in the first round of the Class 1A District 7 tournament. The game will be played in Alburnett and begin at 4:30 p.m.
The winner of that game will play the winner of Alburnett-Prince of Peace who play in a district quarterfinal at 7:00 p.m. That game would also be in Alburnett on July 14 at 7:00 p.m. The district
final will also be in Alburnett on Saturday, July 18.
