Wilton gets second 1-run win

 KALONA — What a way to end the week of games for the Wilton softball team. The Beavers saw their game with Anamosa scheduled for Thursday, July 2 postponed to this week. Wilton collected their second one-run game in a week’s time Friday, July 3, getting a 6-5 win at Mid-Prairie having to come back from a 2-run deficit late. The Beavers improved to 8-2 with the win.
 Mila Johnson started and worked six innings. Johnson scattered five hits and gave up only one run. She struck out one batter. Grace Madlock also pitched in the game.
 Wilton had nine hits in the game. The Beavers 1-4 hitters - Chloe Wells, Mallory Lange, Peyton Souhrada, and Payton Ganzer combined to hit 8-for-15 in the game with four RBI’s. Emily Coss had a solo home run in the game.
 Abbi Patterson took the loss after working 6 ⅓ innings. Patterson gave up four runs on five hits and struck out three. Myah Lugar also pitched in the game. Mid-Prairie had eight hits in the game. Rylee Vercande and Lanie Bowlin led the Golden Hawks with two hits and a RBI each.
 Wilton scored the game’s first runs with two in the top of the third inning. A RBI double by Mallory Lange scoring Chloe Wells and a RBI single by Payton Ganzer scoring Lange were the runs. Mid-Prairie scored a run in the third to cut the lead in half after three, 2-1. That score stood until the Beavers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Mid-Prairie sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and scored four runs to take a 5-3 lead after five innings.
 Wilton came back and in the top of the seventh scored three runs to take a one-run, 6-5 lead. Emi Coss pushed the score to 5-4 with a one-out solo home run. The next two batters - Wells and Peyton Souhrada - reached base. Both would score on a two-run single by Ganzer. The Golden Hawks got a base runner on base with two outs but could not score the tying run.

Wilton holds off Camanche to get one-run victory at home

 WILTON — The Wilton softball team picked up a big 1-run win, 7-6 over Camanche at home on Monday, June 29. The Beavers led 5-1 after the first inning, and 7-1 after six innings. However, Camanche rallied and scored five runs in the top of the seventh to make things interesting. The Beavers however, were able to hold off the Indians charge and claim a valuable win.
 Mila Johnson started and got the win after five innings of work. She gave up one run on two hits and she struck out six batters. Grace Madlock pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
 Wilton had eight hits in the game and two players with multi-hit games. Ella Caffery and Emi Coss each had two hits for Wilton. Taylor Garvin had a home run and four RBI’s. Other Wilton hits came from Payton Ganzer, and Grace Madlock. Ganzer also had a RBI in the game.
 Camanche had six hits in the game led by Tarah Wehde who was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI’s. Wehde took the loss pitching after working six innings and giving up seven runs on six hits. She struck out five Wilton batters.
 Wehde belted a solo home run in the first inning to give Camanche a 1-0 lead. Wilton would send eight batters to the plate in their 5-run first inning. Ella Caffery had a two-out, RBI double scoring Mallory Lange for the Beavers first run, tying the game at 1-1. Caffery would score later on a wild pitch by Wehde to give Wilton a 2-1 lead. Hayley Madlock drew a walk and Chloe Wells singled to give Wilton two on-base with two outs. Senior Taylor Garvin then connected for a three-run home run extending  Wilton’s lead to 5-1. A Payton Ganzer RBI single in the second inning gave Wilton a 6-1 lead after two innings. Later, a Garvin sac fly drove in Wells who singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and then stole second and went to third on a passed ball. That run gave Wilton a 7-1 lead.
Camanche made things interesting in the final inning, nearly batting around in their order and scored five runs.
