Beavers Beat Tigers To Open New Season

TIPTON — Season openers over the past five years have not been pleasant for Wilton.  The Beavers traveled to Tipton with a 1-4 record in their last five season openers and were looking to get the 2016 season off to a different start.  Wilton raced out to a 13-0 lead after the first quarter on their way to a 32-8 win over the Tigers.  The last opening night win in the past five years was at Tipton in 2013 in a 39-15 win.
The Beavers came into the game with a new quarterback after 2015 senior Javin Drake graduated.  Drake passed for 1,655 yards last season.  This season, sophomore Jerome Mays takes over and last Friday, he looked like a seasoned veteran guiding the offense.  Mays looked like dual threat Beaver quarterbacks from years past, passing for 88 yards on 8-of-12 pass attempts and rushed for 69 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.
“Our philosophy is next man up.  You are not going to replace a player like Javin Drake.  He had almost 1,600 yards of offense and also was a good defender and punter.  We have a new guy in Jerome Mays who is ready to take that spot.  He played well,” said Wilton football coach Ryan Hetzler.
“Jerome has been working hard to get ready for this season.  He put in the time and effort to take the quarterback position.  He made great decisions and there are things that he will need to work on, but he played a great game,” said Hetzler.
In addition to Mays’ play, Wilton relied on senior running back Bryce Oveson in the game.  Oveson gave the Tigers fits all night with his hard, physical running as he was totaling 204 rushing yards on 17 carries for a 12.0-yard average.  Oveson nearly topped the 100-yard mark in the opening quarter and scored three touchdowns in the football game.
“Bryce is a workhorse.  He is going to keep going until he physically can’t.  He set the tone and the physicalness he brings to our team is unmatched,” said Hetzler.
Wilton had 401 yards of total offense in the football game with 312 rushing and 89 passing yards.  The Beavers had 20 first downs to the Tigers’ 9 first downs.  Oveson also had one catch for 20 yards.
Four Beavers had double-digit totals in tackles.  Tyler Hartman had a team high 15 as did Trey Brisker while Oveson and Jared Townsend each had 11 stops.
Tipton football coach Josh Bahr said that the Beavers size surprised them.
“We didn’t expect their size.  We had a feel for what they were going to do offensively and defensively.  Their young quarterback played well and that was big in this game,” said Bahr.
“Wilton did most of their damage in the first half.   Overson is a good back, tough to bring down.  It was part of the game we didn’t handle well,” he said.
Tipton had 166 total yards of offense with 136 rushing and 30 passing yards.  Daulton Mente rushed for 44 yards and scored the Tigers only touchdown.  Zach Ford had 31 yards on five carries and Dalton Clark rushed for 30 yards on 12 carries.
Ben Emrich passed for 29 yards completing 2-of-3 pass attempts.  Brendon Clausson caught three passes for 30 yards.
Defensively, Tipton’s top tackler was Ben Emrich, Zach Ford and Zach Jones with 6 tackles each.
“We didn’t run the football how we wanted to run the football and that made it tough to win the football game.  I give our kids credit, they played hard and physical and we have some things to work on.  The good news is we took care of the football in the game and the things that we need to correct are things we can correct this week in practice,” said Bahr.
Each team traded punts on their opening drives of the season.  Wilton scored the games first points with 5:40 left in the first quarter.  The Beavers capped a 4-play, 83-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run by Bryce Oveson.  It was the first of three first half touchdowns for Oveson as the Beavers built a 25-0 halftime lead.
The Tigers struggled to move the football in the first half, having to punt the football on each of their five first half possessions.  For the first half, Tipton had 52 yards of total offense to the 266 yards the Beavers had.
The Tigers made some adjustments at halftime and finally put points on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.  Trailing 32-0, the Tigers put together their best drive of the night, a 12-play, 67-yard drive that ended in a 1-yard Daulton Mente touchdown.
Tipton began their drive at their own 33-yard line.  Ben Emrich had a good drive under center, rushing for 28 yards on the drive and passing for 29 yards to get the Tigers going.  The Tigers converted a 4th and 3 from the Beavers 10-yard line when Emrich completed an 8-yard pass to Brendon Claussen to set up first and goal at the 2.  Two short Daulton Mente runs and the Tigers had their touchdown.  Tipton attempted a two-point conversion and it was good on a Daulton Mente run to give the Tigers eight points.
The Tigers will be back in action this Friday at Louisa-Muscatine.  The Tigers last played the Falcons, there, in 2011 when they lost 49 to 26.  Louisa-Muscatine lost last week, 41-14 at Mid-Prairie.
The Beavers will play at home for the first time in 2016 when they host rival Durant.  The Wildcats also won last Friday, a 22-7 win at home over Columbus Junction.
