COLUMBUS JUNCTION — The Wilton Beaver football team led 21-0 at halftime and poured on 21 second half points in a 42-0 win at Columbus Junction last Friday. The victory moved the Beavers record to 3-0 and 1-0 in district play. The Beavers received votes in many of the class 1A football polls this week and entered the top-10 in the Cedar Rapids Gazette poll at number 10.
Wilton scored the game’s first points, putting up 14 first quarter points to take a 14-0 lead. Touchdown runs of 10 yards by Jerome Mays and 1 yard by Bryce Oveson opened up the Beavers scoring. Wilton added a 13-yard touchdown pass from Mays to Evan Reifert in the second quarter with 5:36 left before halftime to take a 21-0 lead.
Wilton had 18 first downs and 372 yards of total offense in the game. Jerome Mays passed for 175 yards on 11 completions with a touchdown and rushed for 29 more and another touchdowns. Bryce Oveson led the Beavers in rushing for the second time in three games with 138 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. Even Reifert caught four passes for 64 yards and Jacob Sheperd caught four passes for 48 yards.
Defensively, Trey Brisker had a team high 10 tackles while Oveson chipped in 8 and Reifert and Kaleb Timmsen 5 each.
Columbus Junction had nine first downs and 162 yards of total offense. Colby Carter led the Wildcats in rushing with 87 yards on 17 carries. Nick Hernandez had a team high 8 tackles while Abel Mena had 7.
In the second half, a Trey Brisker 3-yard run put the score at 28-0 with 2:41 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing Columbus Junction drive Jacob Sheperd picked off a Colby Carter pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to push the Beavers lead to 35-0.
Bryce Oveson capped the scoring with a 6-yard run with 4:17 left in the football game.
