Comets Too Much For Knights In District Opener

STANWOOD — The North Cedar Knights had a tough district opening game last Friday night at home.  The Bellevue Comets were the opponent, coming into the football game with a 2-0 record and having scored at least 37 points in each of their first two games.  Friday, the Comets shot past the Knights and dodged a few raindrops with a 55-7 one-sided contest.  The Comets led 28-7 after the first quarter.
The Comets racked up 333 yards on the ground on 35 carries for a 9.5-yard average.  The Comets had 420 yards of total offense in the game.
Bellevue senior running back Peter Kilburg gnashed the Knights defense with 211 yards rushing on 22 carries and four touchdowns.  Kilburg added three, two-point conversion runs.  Kilburg had a big first quarter, rushing for 121 yards on 10 carries and scoring all four touchdowns in the first quarter.
Kilburg scored the game’s first points, two plays in on a 41-yard touchdown run and after he added the two-point conversion run, Bellevue led 8-0, 35 seconds into the game.  North Cedar went three and out on their first drive and punted the ball back to the Comets.  Three plays later, Kilburg took the handoff and darted 37 yards for his second TD in the game’s first five minutes to put the score at 14-0.  Kilburg added touchdown runs of 2 and 1 yards later in the quarter to give Bellevue a 28-0 lead late in the opening quarter.
North Cedar got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter on their fourth offensive series.  After a two-yard run by Colin Sander the Knights faced a 3rd and 8.  That’s when Carter Johnson found Sander through the air for a 67-yard touchdown pass and catch.  A Jacob Jensen PAT put the score at 28-7 after the first quarter.
North Cedar would trail 42-7 at halftime and 49-7 after three quarters.  The running, 35-point mercy rule clock was in effect the entire fourth quarter.  Bellevue did manage to score a touchdown with 6:07 left in the football game.
Cade Daugherty passed for 87 yards and two touchdowns on eight pass completions.  Hunter Clasen had a team high four receptions for 36 yards and Trey Daugherty had two catches for 19 yards and two touchdowns.
Carter Johnson passed for 68 yards and had a touchdown pass in the game.  Colin Sander was the top rusher for North Cedar with 41 yards on nine carries.  Sander scored the only Knight touchdown on a 68-yard catch.
Bellevue will host Durant Friday night in their first district game at home.  The Wildcats lost a tough 18-11 football game at home to begin district play and enter the game 1-2.
North Cedar will travel to Clayton Ridge Friday to play the Eagles.  The Eagles be Tipton 13-12 Friday in a very close football game.  Clayton Ridge enters the game 2-1 and will have played three of their first four games at home after North Cedar’s game there Friday.
