DURANT — The Durant Wildcats did everything they could do to win against Maquoketa Valley last Friday, but came up short 18-11 in their district opener. The Wildcats fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1. Durant will travel to Clayton Ridge Friday.
“I could not be prouder of how hard our team played against a tough, undefeated Maquoketa Valley team,” said Durant football coach Greg White.
The Wildcats battled the weather and a very good football team all night. Durant scored the game’s first points in the first quarter on a nine-play drive. The Wildcats showed some trickery on the scoring play, with a pitch pass executed by Curtis Lilienthal. Lilienthal took the pitch from quarterback Leo Callison and tossed the football 34 yards to a streaking Mason Compton, who had gotten behind the defensive back, for a touchdown. A Callison two-point pass to Compton gave Durant an 8-0 lead.
Maquoketa Valley scored before the quarter ended on a Tyson Tucker 1-yard run to cut the Wildcats lead to 8-6.
An Alec McDowell 4-yard run gave Maquoketa Valley their first lead at 12-8 in the second quarter. Durant tried to regain the lead before halftime, but had to settle for a field goal from Leo Callison to put the score at 12-11 at halftime.
Like most of Eastern Iowa Friday night, the weather turned during the football game. At halftime, through much of the second half, it rained steadily and heavily at times. Neither team could score in the third quarter as the score was 12-11 heading to the final quarter. Maquoketa Valley would score the winning score in the fourth quarter when quarterback Tyson Tucker scored his second rushing touchdown of the game, this one from 20 yards out to put Maquoketa Valley up 18-11.
Tristan Hughes led Durant rushers with 46 yards. Leo Callison passed for 45 yards on six completions and rushed for 13 yards. Curtis Lilienthal passed one time for a 34-yard touchdown pass to Mason Compton. Compton caught five passes for 73 yards.
Defensively, Durant was led in tackles by Dawson Frett with 16 while Cale Frett had 13 and Denver Feuerbach and Luke Whitlock each had 10. Freshman Joe Lilienthal also made an impact with 7 tackles in the game.
Tucker led the Wildcats in rushing with 104 yards and two scores. He also passed for 30 yards.
“We have another very tough and another undefeated opponent in Bellevue on the road next Friday, so we have our work cut out for us, but our team will work hard this week to get ready,” said White.
