BEAVERS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT GAME TO OPEN 2016 SEASON

WILTON — The Wilton Beavers moved to 2-0 after a bit 57-32 win over rival Durant last Friday in the non-district finale for both teams.  The Wildcats fell to 1-1 after each team entered the football game 1-0, having won their 2016 season openers last week.  The Beavers put up 424 yards of total offense and led 48-8 before watching Durant make a rally in the fourth quarter with 24 points.  The 24-point fourth quarter by the Wildcats was not enough, but gave the Wildcat fans a lot to take away from the football game heading into district play.
Wilton got another good game out of Bryce Oveson and Jerome Mays.  Mays had another fine football game at quarterback, leading the Beavers in rushing with 95 yards on 12 carries and two touchdown runs.  Mays also passed for 168 yards on 13-for-17 attempts for two touchdowns and no interceptions.  He had a part in five of the Beavers first seven touchdowns in the game.
Oveson rushed for 71 yards on 14 carries and scored a touchdown.  He also scored a touchdown on a 45-yard kick-off return and had his second straight double digit tackle game with 10.
Wilton scored twice in the opening quarter to take a 14-0 lead.  A Jerome Mays 7-yard run and a 60-yard punt return by Evan Reifert accounted for the scores.
The Beavers took control of the football game in the second quarter with three touchdowns to take a 35-8 halftime lead.  Mays was involved in two of those scores with a 4-yard touchdown run and a 34-yard touchdown pass to Reifert.  Sandwiched in there was a 3-yard Bryce Oveson run.
Durant’s lone score came with 1:01 left in the first half when Leo Callison passed to a streaking Luke Whitlock for a 40-yard touchdown strike.
Wilton had nearly two and a half times more first downs in the game than Durant, 24 to 10 and outgianed the Wildcats 424 to 338.
The Beavers rushed for 240 yards with a 5.2-yard per carry average.  Beaver quarterback  Jacob Sheperd caught a team high eight passes for 83 yards while Evan Reifert caught five passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Wilton held the Wildcats rushing attack down.  Durant rushed for 51 yards on 28 carries for a 1.8-yard average in the game.  The Beavers were led in tackles by Tyler Hartman with 13, Bryce Oveson with 10, Trey Brisker with 9 and Jared Townsend with 8.  The Beavers sacked Durant quarterback Leo Callison three times, one each from Oveson, Townsend and Nathaniel DeVore.
Wilton’s special teams also shined in the football game.  Kaleb Timmsen kicked a 25-yard field goal and the Beavers also scored two return touchdowns in the game, a 45-yard kick-off return by Bryce Oveson and a 60-yard punt return by Even Reifert.
Durant trailed 48-8 after three quarters, but didn’t give up and scored 24 fourth quarter points on three Callison touchdown passes.  The first, an 11-yard pass from Callison to Jake Conley, and ensuing Callison 2-point pass to Mason Compton put the score at 48-16.  Timmsen kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second half to give Wilton a 51-16 lead.  Callison’s second scoring pass to Conley, this one for 80 yards and Cale Frett 2-point run, put the score at 51-24.  Oveson returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown for a 57-24 score.  When Durant got the football back, Callison went deep again, finding Bryce Lafrenz for a 75-yard touchdown pass.  Another Frett 2-point run put the score at 57-32, which would be the final score of the game.
Durant had 10 first downs in the game.  Jake Conley led Durant in rushing with 34 yards.  He also caught four passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
Leo Callison had a career football game, passing for 280 yards on 13-for-16 pass completions with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions.
Luke Whitlock caught five passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Mason Compton had 10 tackles to lead Durant followed by Dawson Frett with 9, Denver Feurbach with 8 and Tristan Hughes and Luke Whitlock each with 7.
Durant returns home to begin district play, hosting Maquoketa Valley.  Maquoketa Valley is 2-0 and has scored 63 points this season.  Wilton will hit the road and play at Columbus Junction in their district opener.  Columbus Junction is 1-1 and has scored 31 points this season.
