STANWOOD — The North Cedar Knights have a different look to them this year with many new faces on their roster and a new coach on the sidelines. Last Friday, the Knights welcomed regional rival Alburnett to town. The Knights beat the Pirates two out of the past three years with Alburnett taking a close 32-27 game last fall in Stanwood. Friday, the Pirates found just enough offense to get out of Stanwood with a 14-6 win.
A Tanner Hoyer touchdown in the second half, broke open a close 8-6 ball game at halftime to give Alburnett the win. The Pirates graduated their top two quarterbacks, top three rushers and top five receivers from last year’s 7-3 team. Also gone was their top-five tacklers from last season.
The Pirates had 165 yards rushing and 32 yards passing for 197 yards of total offense in the game. Logan McClintock passed for 32 yards on three completions and rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown. Tanner Hoyer caused the Knights a lot of trouble on the ground, leading Alburnett in rushing with 98 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. He averaged 5.4 yards a carry. Three different receivers caught passes for the Pirates in the game.
Carter Johnson scored the only touchdown for the Knights on a 2-yard scoring run. Johnson passed for 42 yards and Jacob Jensen caught the only pass.
North Cedar had 93 yards rushing after losing 15 yards on rush attempts. Bryce Bemer rushed for 100 yards on 15 carries for a 6.7-yard average.
“We have to move forward offensively every play on offense. To Alburnett’s credit, we didn’t handle their scheme well. They brought pressure consistly and we had trouble with it tonight. It’s the mark of a young team,” said North Cedar football coach Adam Hadenfeldt.
Defensively, North Cedar was led in tackles by two players with double digit tackle totals. Ethan Hill led North Cedar with 13 including six solo stops and Mason Minar had 10 tackles with four solo tackles. Alburnett leading tackler was Tanner Sloan with 9 and Gunnar Martin and Nick Airy with 7 each.
“We played an outstanding defensive football game tonight,” said Hadenfeldt.
“We had a winning effort tonight. We did a good job getting to the football and we (coaches) saw the things that we have been seeing in practice. If that is the effort we are going to get out of the defense, we are going to be fine. We’ll figure out how to get the ball moving offensively,” he said.
The Knights will be back on the field this Friday when they face Lisbon for their last non-district football game. The football game will be played at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon. The Knights lost by a touchdown, 24-17 last year at home, but beat the Lions 27-12 in 2014.
