Beavers Win Twice In Three Games

  CLARENCE — The Wilton Beavers played three games last week, two on the road, winning two of the three games to improve to 10-6 on the season. The 10 victories give the Beavers back-to-back 10-win seasons, three seasons removed from a 5-19 year. The Beavers beat West Branch 77-42 on Tuesday, January 9, Durant 64-25 on Friday, January 12 and lost at North Cedar on Saturday, January 13, 61-43. The loss to the Knights snapped a three-game win streak by the Beavers which equaled a season high.

  The Beavers saw their win streak end with a 61-43 loss at North Cedar last Saturday. The Beavers could not get baskets to fall in the first half, scoring 17 first-half points. The Knights used an 18-5 first-quarter run to take control of the basketball game. North Cedar led by nine points, 11-2 with four minutes left in the quarter. Wilton cut the Knights lead to under 10 points, 22-14 with under four minutes left in the first half, but trailed by nine, 26-17 at halftime. Wilton had a tough time guarding forward Darby Hawtrey. Hawtrey had 10 of her team-high 17 points in the first half for the Knights. Emily Lange had 8 points, including two three-pointers and Aubrey Putman had 6 points to lead Wilton scorers in the first half.

  North Cedar was nine points better than the Beavers in the third quarter 21-12 as the Knights pushed their lead to 18 points by quarters end, 47-29. Each team scored 14 points in the final quarter.

  North Cedar’s defense held Wilton to only 15 made baskets in 58 attempts. The Beavers were 8-for-17 from the free throw line in the game. Despite that, three Beavers scored in double figures. Lange finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds while Kortney Drake and Aubrey Putman each scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Kali Milder came off the bench to score 4 points, get 4 assists, 3 steals, and a rebound. Wilton had 22 rebounds, 8 assists and 15 steals in the game.

  North Cedar was led by four players in double figures. Darby Hawtrey put up a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Leah Crock scored 14 points and had 6 rebounds and Tessa Fields had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Lexi Crist chipped in 13 points, 5 assists and made all three of the Knights three-point attempts in the game.

Beavers Sweep Wildcats with 64-25 Home Win
  WILTON — The Wilton girls basketball team won for the second time over Durant this season with a 64-25 win at home last Friday. The two teams played in December with the Beavers winning on the Wildcats home floor.

  Durant hung tough early, trailing by just two points, 10-8 after the first quarter. However, a big 17-2 run by the Beavers in the second quarter opened up a 27-10 halftime lead for Wilton. The Beavers kept building on their lead, outscoring the Wildcats by ten points in the third and using a 15-4 fourth-quarter run to secure the win. Wilton outscored Durant 37 to 15 in the second half.

  Three Beavers reached double figures in the game led by Emily Lange with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kali Milder scored a career-high 16 points off the bench and Kortney Drake added 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Durant shot an even 50-percent from the field (25-for-50) and missed only two free throws in 14 attempts.

  No Wildcat scored in double figures. Amanda Wiese led Durant scorers with 9 points and 5 rebounds and Kamryn Meyer scored 8 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.

Beavers Net Big Win Over West Branch, 77-42
  WILTON — For the fourth game in a row, the Wilton girls basketball team topped 70 points in a ball game. Two of the previous three were wins over West Liberty and Wapello and a loss to Monticello. Last Tuesday, the fourth time over 70 points netted a big RVC South victory over West Branch, 77-42. The win gave the Beavers a sweep over the Bears, as Wilton won at West Branch in late November, in the season’s second game, 76-74.

  Kortney Drake led four Beavers in double figures with 22 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 assists. Emily Lange scored 19 and had 8 rebounds, Aubrey Putman had 15 points and 7 rebounds and Kali Milder scored 12 points off the bench.

  Wilton raced to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter. The Beavers matched their 19-point first quarter with a 19-point second quarter to take a 38-20 halftime lead. Wilton put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring the Beavers 23-10 to take a 61-30 lead to the final quarter. Wilton made 27 baskets and five three-pointers in the game. Wilton got to the free throw line 33 times in the game.

  Tatum Koenig and Sasha Koenig scored 18 and 11 points to lead West Branch.
