TIPTON — The Tipton boys basketball team had a tough night on offense against the Cascade Cougars. The Tigers entered the basketball game averaging 64.6 points a game. In their home game against Cascade last Friday, the Cougars held the Tigers to only 32 points, half of their season average, in a 58-32 win. The Tigers fell to 8-3 while Cascade improved to 9-0.
Cascade took a 10-2 lead after the first quarter, holding the Tigers scoreless for over three minutes to start the game. Tipton trailed 7-2 with four minutes left in the first quarter, and turned up their defense, allowing only three points to the Cougars in the final half of the opening quarter.
The Tigers offense came alive in the second quarter with 14 points to the Cougars 13 points. That point outburst set the score at 23-16 at halftime. The third quarter was a game changer for the Tigers as the Cougars outscored them by ten in the quarter, using a 14-4 run to take a 37-20 lead to the final quarter. Cascade outscored the Tigers 21-12 in the final quarter.
No Tiger player reached double figures in the loss. The Tigers made 12 shots from the field and were 6-for-14 from the free throw line. Logan Hoffman and Jacob Tischuk led Tipton in scoring with each getting 8 points. Hoffman led in rebounding with 9. Two Cascade players scored in double figures with Haris Hoffman leading with 19 and Brock Simon scoring 15.
Tuesday, the Tigers began the week with a road game at Iowa City Regina. It was a match-up between the top two teams in the River Valley South Division. The winner would get a leg up on the top spot and gain momentum for the second half of the season. There, the Regals shot just over 50-percent for the game and connected on nearly half of their 15 three-point attempts in taking a 67-42 win.
Regina led 18-11 after the first quarter after taking a 7-0 lead with five minutes left in the opening quarter. Tipton used a 10-6 run to cut the Regal lead to 13-10 with two minutes later, but the Regals held a 7-point advantage after the first quarter. THe 18-11 score stood for the first three minutes of the second quarter as neither team shot the basketball well. Tipton cut the Regal lead to four points, 18-14 with four minutes left in the half. Regina however, would end the quarter on a 16-6 run to take a 34-20 halftime lead.
The Regals were seven points better than the Tigers in the third quarter (17 to 10) and took a 50-32 lead to the final quarter.
Regina held four of the five Tipton starters to under 10 points in the game. Logan Hoffman led Tipton with 18 points including going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Starters Trent Pelzer, Jacob Tischuk and Frank Bierman combined to score 9 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Tipton’s other starter, Andrew Stewart, scored 8 points.
Four different Regals made a three-pointer in the game. Jocoa Kerschen led all scorers with 19 points while Masen Miller scored 14 to lead Regina scorers. The two teams play again on Tuesday, February 6 in Tipton.
