TIPTON — It was a challenging week for the Tipton girl’s basketball team with two games against Class 2A top-10 ranked teams. The Tigers opened their post-Christmas portion of their schedule at #9 Iowa City Regina last Tuesday and then hosted #7 Cascade last Friday. The Tigers lost to the Regals 65-34 and lost to the Cougars 53-46.
The Tigers had a good start to their game with the Cougars. Tipton took a 14-12 lead after the first quarter. Tipton guard Emily Hermsen had 11 points in the first quarter. Cascade rallied and used a 19-5 second-quarter run to take a 31-19 lead to halftime. The Cougars and Tigers played closely in the third quarter with one-point separating them, but Cascade took a 42-29 lead to the final quarter. Tipton would rally, outscoring the Cougars 17 to 11 in the final quarter to trim the Cougar lead to seven by the end of the game.
Tipton made 16 baskets in the game and were 11-for-20 free throws. Emily Hermsen scored 18 points and had 2 assists while Amanda Smith had a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Jamie Kofron grabbed 10 rebounds to go with 5 points and four different Tigers had two assists.
Anne Ryan had 20 points and Nicole McDermott had 16 to lead Cascade in scoring.
Tipton had a tough time early in their game at Iowa City Regina. All-State guard Mary Crompton returned to play in the game, seeing her first action of the season after missing time due to an injury. Crompton gave the Regals a boost, scoring 12 points off the bench and making 4-of-6 shots. Three other Regals reached double digits. Kennedy Wallace and Alex Wiese each scored 14 points and Greyson Dumont scored 10 points.
The Regals took command of the basketball game in the first quarter with a 24-point outburst to lead 24-8 after one quarter. The Regals extended their lead by halftime to 41-16 after a 17-8 run in the second quarter. Tipton played their best quarter in the third, scoring 12 points.
The Regals defense held the Tigers without a double-digit scorer in the game. Emily Hermsen had 8 points, 3 assists, and 2 blocked shots to lead Tipton. The Tigers had 25 rebounds, led by Amanda Smith with 8.
The Tigers schedule sees Mid-Prairie coming to Tipton on Tuesday. The Tigers travel to West Liberty Friday and host NE Goose Lake Saturday night. The Tigers game with the Rebels starts a three-game home stretch. Tipton hosts West Branch on Tuesday, January 16 and North Cedar Saturday, January 20.
