BROOKLYN — The Tipton wrestling team made the hour and 15-minute trek straight West to Brooklyn for their annual trip to the BGM Duals. There, the Tigers collected three more dual victories to improve to 13-4 on the season in dual meets. Tipton beat Gladbrook-Reinbeck-North Tama, BGM and Davis County. The Tigers fell to Gilbert and North Scott. The Tigers are back in action this Thursday at NE Goose Lake in a River Valley Conference quadrangular meet with West Branch, Wilton, and NE Goose Lake. The Tigers will wrestle in their final weekend tournament of the regular season Saturday at Denver, Iowa Duals. The Tigers will host a quadrangular meet on Tuesday, January 23 when they face Anamosa, Belle Plaine, and Davenport West. The River Valley Conference meet is four days later on January 27 at Mid-Prairie.
Against GR-NT, Tipton won eight matches including the five of the last six matches in a 45-35 dual win. Tipton trailed 29-15 after eight matches. A decision win by Brenden Leeper at 138 and a Dylan Mente pin over Zade Podhajsky in 1:31 were the only nine THS points. After GR-NT won at 220, Tipton won the final five of the last six matches, one by forfeit and four by pin.
Jessie Lieser pinned Xander Bradley in 3:29 at 285 after breaking a 0-0 match in the second period with a takedown before his pin. That pin set the score at 29-21. A forfeit win by Kaleb Mesick at 106 put drew Tipton closer at 29-27. Three straight pins by Austin Lenz at 113, Ben Emrich at 120 and John Crowley at 126 gave Tipton 18 more points and a 45-29 lead, they're first since leading 15-11 early in the dual. Lenz led 6-1 before getting his pin in 2:21. Emrich led 8-2, giving up two escape points before his pin in 49 seconds and Crowley led 5-0 before his pin in 1:26 after a takedown and 3-point near fall.
Against BGM, Tipton won 57-23 and won ten matches including eight straight to begin the dual. In the eight-match run, Tipton won five matches by forfeit. Thrown in were wins by pin from Kaleb Mesick at 106 and Ben Emrich at 120 and a sudden victory decision win by Brenden Leeper at 138. Tipton led 45-0 after the eight-match run of wins.
Tipton beat Davis County 37-34. Tipton led 17-0 to start the dual with a forfeit win by Brendan Nantz at 106, a Tech Fall wins by Austin Lenz at 113 and a pin by Ben Emrich at 120. Tipton continued its run, adding 11 more points on a tech fall win by Brandon Hines at 132 and a pin by Brenden Leeper at 138 to give the Tigers a 28-0 lead. Later in the dual, a Dylan Mente pin at 170 and a decision win by Nolan Ohrt at 182 gave Tipton a 37-13 lead thanks to the 9-0 run of points. Davis County ended the dual on a 21-0 run on two wins by pin and another by forfeit.
Against Gilbert, Tipton lost 52-24. The Tigers trailed 24-0 after the first four matches in the dual, losing three contested matches. A forfeit win by Jessie Lieser at 285 and an Austin Lenz pin of Gabriel Killian in 22 seconds cut the Gilbert lead in half, 24-12. Tipton trailed 30-12, but scored nine straight points on a forfeit win by Ben Emrich and a John Crowley decision win to set the score at 30-21. That is as close as the Tigers could get as Gilbert outscored Tipton 22-3 in the final five matches.
Against North Scott, Tipton lost 48-30. The Tigers led 24-0 after winning the first four matches in the dual. Brendan Nantz won by forfeit at 106. Three pins followed from Austin Lenz at 113, Ben Emrich at 120 and John Crowley at 126. North Scott won by tech fall at 126 to set the score at 24-5. Brendan Leeper set the Tiger lead at 30-5 with a pin over Blake Elgin in 3:45 at 138. That would be it for the Tigers, however, and the Lancers won the final eight matches, outscoring the Tigers 43-0 in the run.
