SIGOURNEY — It was a tough night for 10th ranked Wilton in their 2016 season finale at Sigourney-Keota.  The Beavers fell 35-28, ending their season at 7-2 overall and 5-2 in district 4.  On the line in the game was an automatic berth to the postseason as the runner-up in district 3.  The Beavers slim playoff chances were dashed shortly after their game in Sigourney when the team found out that they lost out on one of two wild card spots to West Lyon and West Branch.  The playoff structure this season is set where the top two teams in each of the seven districts qualify for the 16-team field, one that was cut in half after the 2015 season.  The only chance for Wilton after the loss was a wild card spot.  Though they tied West Branch, West Lyon, Lake Mills and Panorama with a 5-2 district record, it really came down to three teams and a 17-point differential used to break ties.  Tiebreaker procedures used were based off of district record, not overall record.
West Lyon had the highest among the group with a 10.14, West Branch was next with 9.71 and Wilton was third with 8.71.  Thush the Beavers lost out this year despite having a better overall record than West Branch and an equal overall record to West Lyon.
The Beavers ran into a tough Savage Cobra team.  Sigourney-Keota led district 4 in scoring with 399 points in nine football games and did not score fewer than 35 points in eight of their nine games and the game they didn’t, they scored 28 points.
Wilton slienced the crowd early when senior Evan Reifert returned the opening kick-off 90 yards to give Wilton a 6-0 lead before many had settled into their seats for the night.
Sigourney-Keota responded however, with 21 unanswered points on touchdown runs by Carson Crawford and Avery Moore and a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the first quarter by Noah Boender to put the score at 21-6.  Wilton played from behind the rest of the game.  Wilton trimmed the Cobras lead to 21-14 by halftime, scoring once in the second quarter on a Jerome Mays 25-yard touchdown run with 7:48 left before halftime.
Each team traded touchdowns in the second half with each scoring once in the third and the fourth quarters.  Wilton’s touchdowns came from a Mays 55-yard run in the third and a Mays 59-yard pass to Reifert early in the fourth quarter.
Sigourney-Keota finishes the regular season 8-1 and will play #2 Pella Christian this week in a class 1A quarterfinal.  The winner of that game will play the winner of #1 Iowa City Regina vs. West Branch a week later.
Wilton was outgained 410 yards to 314 yards and lost the first down battle 21 to 9 in the game.  Jerome Mays had 236 yards of total offense in the game, leading Wilton in rushing with 141 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.  He passed for 95 yards on 2-of-10 attempts with a touchdown and two interceptions.  Bryce Oveson rushed for 69 yards and Evan Reifert had 95 receiving yards and a touchdown in the game.
Defensively, three Beavers reached double digits in tackles with Oveson leading with 19, Trey Brisker with 12 and Tyler Hartman with 10.
The Cobras had 410 yards, all rushing despite throwing the football five times.  Three running backs topped 100 yards in the game.  Avery Moore rushed for 172 yards on 23 carries, Carson Crawford rushed for 128 yards on 25 carries and Luke Greiner rushed for 121 yards on 21 carries.  Defensively, Alec Schuster and Noah Boender each had 6 tackles to lead the Cobras defense.
Wilton says goodbye to ten seniors from a 7-2 team this year.  Graduating will be Evan Reifert, Derek McQuillen, Bryce Oveson, Ethan Fagner, Brady Barrett, Ethan Fagner, Zach Rubendall, Nathaniel DeVore, Jake Lenker, Kaleb Timmsen.
