TIPTON — The Tipton Tiger football team rallied back after a tough loss at home to West Branch last Friday to take a 54-13 season ending victory at home against rival North Cedar.  Tipton outgained the Knights rushing the football with a season high 487 yards on the ground to the Knights 74 in the football game, and 508 yards to 141 of total yards in the game..  The Tigers had 16 first downs to the Knights 7.
“It felt like one of those typical North Cedar games where it’s back and forth.  Then we talked to the kids after the first quarter and said ‘Ok, is it going to be that way all night?’  We’ve been in their shoes where we haven’t been the favorite.  We responded.  We put our foot down and really got things rolling in the second quarter,” said Tipton football coach Josh Bahr.
Though the score was a highlight for many, what happened in the fourth quarter stole the show.  Longtime manager, senior Travis Riedel scored a touchdown with 8:32 left in the game, sending the Tiger fans into a frenzy as much as any other Tiger score in the game.  Riedel, a manager since 7th grade, suited up for his first football game and practiced last week after obtaining a physical to do so.  At halftime, teammates eurged the Tiger coaches that Travis needed to score in the second half.
On the Tigers first drive of the fourth quarter, and extension of a drive started in the late third quarter, two Tiger ball carries brought the football near the goal line.  On a 3rd and 2 from the Knight 15, Ben Emrich rushed for 12 yards and slide to the 1-yard line, setting up first and goal.  Emrich and others waved to the coaches to bring on Riedel for the short yardage package.  After a illegal procedure penalty set Tipton back to the Knight eight on first and goal.  On the next play Dalton Clark had a clear path to the end zone and slid at the 1-yard line.  Again Riedel was summonded to the hudel.  On the next play, Emrich put the football in Riedel’s belly, and Riedel lunged to the goal line.  A Knight defender met him and stood him up, Emrich came up behind Riedel and began a push to get him into the endzone followed by teammates until Riedel crossed the goal line.  Riedel then celebrated like it was Christmas morning as did nearly everyone in the stands.  Though the score was meaningless in the final outcome, there was nothing insignificant to anyone wearing black and gold Friday.
“He’s been a part of the program for a long time.  Very dependable, outstanding kid with a kind heart.  He’d do anything for us.  Probably one of the most proud Tipton Tigers I have been around,” said Bahr.
“It was important to our team.  We had kids sliding before scoring.  They (Tipton players) talked about it during the game,” he said.
Riedel would be in on five offensive plays in the final quarter.  Riedel’s score bookended the Tipton scoring for the season as Daulton Mente scored the first touchdown of the 2016 back on August 26 at home against Wilton.  Riedel became the seventh different Tipton football player to score a rushing touchdown this season and fifth senior running back to do so.  The Tigers rushed for 31 touchdowns this season and put up 2,418 rushing yards as a team which was the second highest total in district 3 and 10th highest total in class 1A this season.
The Tigers rushed for a season high 487 yards in the game.  Senior Dalton Clark rushed for 248 yards on 25 carries for a 9.9-yard average, and three touchdowns.  Fellow seniors Zach Ford rushed for 80 yards and Daulton Mente rushed for 74 yards.  Each scored two touchdowns.  Ben Emrich had 100 yards of total offense in the football game with 33 passing yards and 67 rushing yards.  Mente caught two passes for 17 yards to lead three Tiger receivers.
Defensively, Tipton was led by eight tackles from Dalton Clark.  Clark also led Tipton with three tackles for loss in the game.  Zach Jones had 6 tackles while Zach Ford and Daulton Mente each had 5.  All three had two tackles for loss as did Ben Emrich.
The Tigers had four forced fumbles combined from Mente, Kolton Crock and Jones.  Ford and Logan Stolte each had interceptions and Quinten Mesick had one pass breakup.
North Cedar’s Shane Weber rushed for 89 yards on seven carries and had two of the Knights touchdowns.  The rest of the North Cedar team rushed for -15 yards on 18 carries.  Weber’s yards were the second highest this season in a game as the Knights flirted with getting their second player with 100 yards rushing in a game this fall.  Bryce Bemer rushed for 100 yards in the season opener with Alburnett and has the highest rush total this season in a game.
Carter Johnson passed for 68 yards on six completions and two interceptions.  Shane Weber had a team high three receptions while Jacob Jensen and Mason Minar each had two catches.
Defensively, Ethan Hill had 12 tackles and Byron Boleyn for the Knights.  Logan Minar had 7 while Greg Hansen and Jacob Jensen each had 6.
North Cedar ends the season with an overall record of 1-8 and a 1-6 district record.  The Knights say goodbye to 11 seniors from the team.  They are Bryce Bemer, Andrew Reif, Byron Boleyn, Jacob Jensen, Colin Sander, Carter Johnson, Nick Dewell, Ethan Hill, Logan Minar, Mason Darts and Chance Cinkovich.
“We grew a lot as a team this year and tonight’s score does not reflect that.  From where we started to where we are tonight, I am very proud of our guys.  This senior group has been through it all.  Three head coaches in four years, three different systems in four years, that’s tough.  Never once did they use that as an excuse to not show up or to quit,”  said North Cedar football coach Adam Hadenfeldt.
“Over the course of the season we had an attitude of ‘No Excuses’.  It’s tough in week nine of a long season.  There wasn’t a day where this group did not want to play football and that says a lot about them,” he said.
The Tigers say goodbye to 9 seniors from their team.  They are Dalton Clark, Daulton Mente, Brendan Claussen, Dillon McCollough, Zach Ford, Zach Jones, Billy Fonner, Logan Schroeder and Kolton Crock.
Tipton took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdown runs by Dalton Clark of 11 yards and Daulton Mente of 14 yards.  North Cedar trimmed the Tigers lead to 13-6 on a 31-yard Shane Weber touchdown run with 1 second left in the first quarter.  The rushing touchdown was significant as it was the third of the season for the Knights to that point.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the early second quarter with TIpton taking a 19-6 lead on a Zach Ford 15-yard touchdown run.  North Cedar answered with a Shane Weber 63-yard run to trim the Tigers lead to 19-13.
Tipton scored 20 unanswered points in the final 7:52 of the first half to take a commanding 39-13 halftime lead.  Touchdown runs by seniors Daulton Mente, Dalton Clark and Zach Ford widened the Tigers lead too far for a Knight comeback.
Dalton Clark scored the only points of the third quarter on a 37-yard touchdown run to put the score at 45-13.  Riedel’s score pushed the score past the 35-point mercy rule running clock.  The Tigers final score came on a safety when Zach Ford tackled North Cedar punter Jacob Jensen in the end zone with 5:38 left in the game.
