DURANT — The Durant Wildcats had a tough end to their 2016 season last Friday as Jesup walked away with a 40-0 victory.  The loss ended the Wildcats season, but a few school records fell by the wayside in the game.  Senior quarterback Leo Callison and sophomore receiver Mason Compton each broke school records.
Durant finishes the year 1-8 overall and winless in class 1A district 3.  The Wildcats scored points in all but two football games this season, both shutouts.  The Wildcats win came in the season opener at home in a 22-7 win over Columbus Junction.
“It was not the way we wanted to end the season on Senior Night, but the boys played hard,” said Durant football coach Greg White.
Offensively, we felt we were moving the ball well, but we stopped ourselves with 2 interceptions and a fumble that led to 3 scores for them.  I thought our offensive line had one of their better games as well. Leo Callison finished the night with 206 yards passing to end this season with a new school record of 1,416 yards,” said White.
Quarterback Leo Callison ended his fine season with 206 yards passing on 17 completions.  He passed for 1,416 yards and 11 touchdowns this season on 100 completions setting a new school record for yards in a season.  He also broke the school record for single season completions.  Both were records held by 2015 graduate Will Bentley who had 89 completions for 1,284 yards last year.
Mason Compton caught eight passes for 104 yards in the Jesup game.  Compton also had a big season, catching 38 passes for 604 yards and 6 touchdowns.  Compton’s receptions and yardage total breaks 2014 graduate Alik Lorenz’s records set that year with 36 receptions for 521 yards.
Cole Miedema, Jake Conley, Curtis Lilienthal and Tristan Hughes all had two receptions in the game.  Conley led Durant in rushing with 54 yards on 13 carries.  Conley was the leading rusher for the Wildcats this fall.  Hughes chipped in 20 yards on six carries.
Defensively, Dawson Frett had a team high 12 tackles including eight solo tackles.  Zac Badtram and Conley each had 5 tackles and Brennen Stewart and Hughes each had 4 tackles.
Drew Schmit was a thorn in the Wildcats side all night.  Schmit accounted for all six of the J-Hawks touchdowns.  He had a 95-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown as the Wildcats were in the red zone trying to tie the football game at 7 in the first half.  Schmit would finish with 126 yards passing with two touchdowns and 90 yards rushing on six carries and three touchdowns.
Noah McMurrin rushed for 68 yards on seven carries and Austin Harris had three carries for 37 yards.  Both are seniors.  Ethan Wyant caught six of Schmit’s passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns while Cade Nolan caught three passes for 33 yards.
Defensively, Tyler Lienau had a team high 15 tackles while Bryce Winters had 8 and Cole Van Brocklin had 7.
Jesup ends the season one game short of a winning record with a 4-5 overall mark.  The J-Hawks finished 3-4 in the district with the win.
Durant will say goodbye to nine seniors from this year’s team.  Those players are Luke Whitlock, Jake Conley, Leo Callison, Jacob Prunchak, Dener Feuerbach, Brennen Stewart, Alan Hammel, Matt Fisher and Tanner Hoon.
We were a young team with a lot of young talent on both sides of the ball. We will miss our seniors and their leadership, but the foundation is there for more excitement next year.  These guys gave me everything they had in each and every game this year, and had an amazing attitude through some really tough times.  I could not be prouder of all of them,” said White.
